I don't mind long travel distances, provided that I'm not having to do it continually. The problem with, say, Oblivion or Morrowind, was that quests continually took you back and forth across the entire map, e.g. someone in Bravil tells you to deliver a package to Leyawin.

What I think is better is to keep the majority of the quests local to the city, and have the player move around from city to city gradually. The player still has to traverse the huge distance to get from one side of the world to the other, but if they're not doing it all at once (or worse, multiple times) it will not be as boring to travel.

Yeah, the quest with that drunken Modoc farmer in the Den was annoying me as hell. Modoc->farm->Modoc->Den->Modoc duh

anyone interested in exploring and doesn't own a ps2, its worth renting a ps2 and shadows of the colossus.

probably has the best compass implementation i've seen.
