What JRPGs have the most compelling or believable story, motives or characterisation?

I understand where you are coming from but surely grounded has more connotations than 'profane' or 'worldly'? You could say that Tolkien is grounded but not profane, because his world is systematic and historical. Magic is minimal, comes from divinity, has a well explained origin. Yet the...

    JRPGs with spiritual themes?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will add for anyone reading this thread later, that I find Dark Souls to be a spiritually interesting game.

    JRPGs with spiritual themes?

Thanks for the advice so far. I have played Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey and Shin Megami Tensei IV and loved them. Maybe I'll check out Apocalypse. Shadow Hearts Covenant and Okami sound like great suggestions. I tried Xenogears but stopped about 30 hours in, it's a good suggestion...

    JRPGs with spiritual themes?

Looking for games that are unexpectedly spiritual, whether that means a Tolkienian quest against spiritual darkness, or a Star Wars type focus on a "life force"... Something ideally with good exploration, like an open world, or a grid like Wizardry. I've played many FF games (6, 7, 8, 9, 10...

A eulogy for Alignment in CRPGs

Isn't the problem really linked in with the current culture war? Post-modernism says good and evil are just narratives, so everyone who subscribes to that philosophy will have trouble taking alignment seriously. Additionally the West is multi-religious and a traditional complicated ethical...

Why the hell aren't there more "space opera" / futuristic CRPGs?

It's from a short series they did between seasons, God knows why. ...and thus sadly it's canon now.

Why the hell aren't there more "space opera" / futuristic CRPGs?

wahrk DalekFlay Darkzone I find myself agreeing with different things you have all said. If politics is downstream of culture, as the phrase goes, then culture is downstream of religion/philosophy probably. As Darkzone said most of the problems with Star Trek: Discovery to me seem rooted in...

    Final Fantasy XVI

Well that's true, I appreciate Japan as being a place we can still get high budget non-woke games that actually love western fantasy. I heard from someone that a SJW mob are demanding more diversity in FF16 predictably. Hope SE don't back down, just ignore it and pretend they didn't notice.

    Final Fantasy XVI

Yeah - I love Japan and it's values, but don't you just get a bit tired sometimes, of how everything today must conform to that same cuteness directive in such a predictable way... instead of the variety of say a 80s OVA - yin and yang - too much emphasis on cuteness without context also rings...

Why the hell aren't there more "space opera" / futuristic CRPGs?

Is that some kinda anti semitic comment lightbane? Shatner and Nimoy were Jewish in origin - have some nuance instead of blaming everything on something simplistic when Trek was as good as it was partly due to Jewish people from day one. Some immigrants integrate well into the West, other...

    Final Fantasy XVI

I dunno, the trailer was a bit bland and like with FFXIII the plot was indecipherable. I hope SE learned we international audiences like a game that doesn't seem like it's was run through Google Translate. Time will tell. A few years ago, we had three very gritty western fantasy looking...
