  1. Ready to give a verdict on Gungnir

Yeah Scramble. It's pretty cool it makes it easier to organize attack where in other tick-based systems it is a mess to figure out the action sequence. I like levels being unimportant but it'd be better if you didn't have to train with each weapon to unlock skills. I had tons of weapons that I...
  2. Ready to give a verdict on Gungnir

It has been a while but I remember there is. This game is far from easy - it is only easy if you don't care about ranking but the ranking system is there to dynamically adjust the difficulty for both casual and hardcore players. Try Advance mode all 3 Stars if you want a challenge. The battle...
  3. Translations of wapanese games

Yumina the Ethereal's translation is done. High school comedy and FP dungeon crawler with an interesting combat system. A 1.4GB demo is available. http://jastusa.com/yumina/downloads.html
  4. JRPGs with interesting systems

Seinarukana(SRPG) BEST COMBAT SYSTEM EVAR. An eroge by a small team that outdone almost every "real" JRPG. The system is complicated and kind of hard to explain so bear with me. Combat is split into phases. Approximately {Combat Start Phase -> [Turn Start Phase ->(Attack Phase -> Defend Phase ->...
  5. Decline The decline of JRPGS

    Gungnir is pretty good.
  6. Romance of Three Kingdoms 12 Power Up Kit

It will never get translated since it was not received well. To be fair the battle system is too much of a poor man clone of Sangokushi Taisen. Their last decent strategy game is Kunitori Zunou Battle on the NDS. I recommend it if you can read Japanese. I wrote an introductory guide about the...
  7. Development Info Josh Sawyer on Utility and Balance in Game Design

I know. It was a respond to you as well as to Harg. Lock picking skill is a dilemma. It is a very important skill because it gives you loot, which is an important factor to rpg players. It is a useless skill because it doesn't do anything besides picking locks and it is a point sink. To the...
  8. Development Info Josh Sawyer on Utility and Balance in Game Design

Well the fighter can open chests that otherwise he would not be able to, so it is not useless though it is pointless. Getting loot is a major draw of RPG. Telling players "hey you are not going to open the highest grade chests with your fighter but you can open most, so everything is cool" isn't...
  9. Translations of wapanese games

You guys probably played it already but Ys 1&2 enhanced-enhanced-enhanced remake is coming to Steam in a few days. Pre-order is available. Also epic OP
  10. Translations of wapanese games

Lunatic Dawn II had some good points but was ultimately dragged down by its messy battle system. I think Lunatic Dawn Passage of the Book is the best in the series. If you want a game with minimal text to translate try Vantage Master Japan. It is one of the rare games that the AI can kick your...
  11. Help me find a GOOD tactical rpg please.

Games that emphasize rock-paper-scissors and limit customization of your units. Advance Wars, Vantage Master, Daisenryaku etc. ZOC is especially critical in Vantage Master because the death of your master means instant loss. These are more strategy games than RPG though.
  12. Help me find a GOOD tactical rpg please.

Power Dolls has opportunity fire though it's not a typical SRPG. Most SRPG don't have ZOC or AOO because it is too limiting to the AI with most units having at most 1-2 range unlike DnD where the enemies have a lot more ranged attack options. SRPG has no random encounters if you could just...
  13. Does my ideal dungeon crawler exist?

Brandish if you don't mind old school top-down console arpg. I really liked the atmosphere. The story mostly revolves around solving the mystery of some huge gigantic old ruins/tower. Most of the story is told within the ruins. The dungeons have a lot of floor traps and platforming involved...
  14. Battle for Westnoth

We are talking about battle system of which the premise of balance doesn't rest on having to collect bajillion e-items. So you can't answer my questions and have to resort to lame excuse. Do you have to play oblivion from start to finish to know that the level scaling mechanic it has in place...
  15. Battle for Westnoth

I was talking specificly Wesnoth and tactical games that don't want to rely on fancy spells/abilities etc. I think I said those features are often overpowered, not always, and I want to emphasize that spells/abilities that can break stalemate under a temporal stack of doom turn system are...
