I actually think having one "tank" was rather good in the original PoE. Combat could become way too messy otherwise. Of course, Eder fills this role nearly perfectly. Unless you build some more exotic parties, like all arquebus chanters. Or make all characters extra durable, like a mix of...

You don't really need to babysit them, though. They are reasonably durable. Just don't have them berserk charge enemy ranks, as that won't end well.

Don't send the pet first. Instead keep it in the back to protect your backline and flank enemies.

Generally there are only normal range weapons and Reach weapons. Where reach weapons have the same Carnage aoe size (but you can attack a primary target further away from your character - therefore also place the aoe center further away).

On the upside, you can achieve a really impressive aoe damage radius with a smart Barb... ...and attach CC effects there as well.

Their magic is quite different, doesn't really focus on buffing (though they are strong in this role as well). For example, they are the most summon focused class.

Incline Elminage Gothic (former Japan only dungeon crawler)

Exactly. I did not have a high level or high purity Alchemist synthesis. To be honest, I did not beat the post-game. Reached floor 16 and decided beating the fucking Stargazers somewhat reliably would require way too much grinding then I was prepared to do. Guess I could try to push trough/save...

I find it clean and efficient. And LOTS of synergies there. After experiencing 5th ed style multiclassing in BG3, I've gained new appreciation for its effective simplicity. Loss of class identity, the muddling of borders between classes is real, though.

Barbs are fantastic... and absolutely a force of nature in PoE1. ...as long as you set their Int high and also preferably include a cleric with AB buffs (Devotions of the Faithful!) and maybe Fortitude debuffs (Radiance aura upgrade AFAIR) - Barbs can eventually target Fort instead of Deflection...

Oh, Diluvian Strike actually has a use?

No, that's fucking terrible design. Copying the worst templates...
