  1. Game News LambdaRogue: The Book of Stars 1.6.1 released

Eh, not at all. Generated random levels are stored as textfiles in "levels/random" folder, and it would just require to store them in "levels/premade" to keep them permament (... players could even do this manually). So, the reason is simply that I hate permanent levels, but love the style...
  2. Game News LambdaRogue 1.6 is darker and completes the main storyline

As requested, a Linux build of LambdaRogue 1.6 is now available: http://lambdarogue.net/dl-showentry.php?n=192
  3. Game News LambdaRogue 1.6 is darker and completes the main storyline

I see. You can ignore most of the quests -- just select to skip the Temple level and directly start in the dungeon. Then, over the course of the whole game, you only need to talk to 5 NPCs at all. Not much in 10 to 15 hours. All the other quests are in there because many people like them...
  4. Game News LambdaRogue 1.6 is darker and completes the main storyline

Because with this information I have something where I can relate to. As you didn't explain what exactly of the story is forced (or even it's the existence of the story itself), I can at least take a look at the games mentioned by you and find the constructive core of your complaining. ;)
  5. Game News LambdaRogue 1.6 is darker and completes the main storyline

    What's your favorite RPG, Unradscorpion?
  6. Game News LambdaRogue 1.6 is darker and completes the main storyline

A linux build will be available soon, probably tomorrow evening.
  7. Game News LambdaRogue 1.6 is darker and completes the main storyline

I believe that many one-person-projects like this one are made in a "I make this game to the game I ever wanted to be produced, but which never was" -- and this is often not based on logical decisions, but on personal experiences and likes. Why getting money as loot from animals, for example...
  8. Game News LambdaRogue 1.6 is darker and completes the main storyline

Oh, how I love the serious and reflected discussions at rpgcodex ;) For many roguelike players, LambdaRogue isn't even a real roguelike, because it has not enough randomized content (such as the quests and story). This is what makes Daggerfall to one of the best RPGs ever for me :)
  9. Game News LambdaRogue ascends patch 1.5.3

Okay, I get your point. Of course, players of LR: The Book of Stars are not forced to use the big default tileset (which is, by the way, an enhancement of the Absurd Nethack tileset). They can choose to select the small tileset, which is based on the Gervais Angband tiles. And they can...
  10. Game News LambdaRogue ascends patch 1.5.3

Yes, it is, because, basically, the whole SDL-based output engine is just a terminal emulator that displays ASCII characters, using a "font" where the ASCII chars look like colored graphical icons. This way, I can keep large potions of the code identical, regardless of the display mode -- the...
  11. Game News LambdaRogue ascends patch 1.5.3

What especially do you consider to be awkward? Perhaps I can improve it (within the tile-based, non-animated roguelike constraints, of course).
  12. Interview The Man behind ADOM @ Temple of the Roguelike

Well, the perhaps you only like the visual / look and feel of a typical roguelike, but not the game mechanics. Instead, you prefer classical RPG with random elements. That's totally fine ;)
  13. Interview The Man behind ADOM @ Temple of the Roguelike

But this give a false impression about the roguelike genre in general, which only rarely have quests and towns, esp. not in the partly static way ADOM does. Not that I don't like quests etc. -- but it's a bit untypical for most roguelikes.
  14. Interview The Man behind ADOM @ Temple of the Roguelike

No, Angband (the vanilla one) has nothing but that generic town with some shops -- when I say "easy", I refer to the chances of surviving the first ten dungeon levels or so, without knowing much about the game -- it is possible to just hack'n'slash through the first levels, and you don't have to...
