How will WOTC's new OGL affect D&D/Pathfinder CRPGs?

Should only be about a decade or so of Early Access to go…

How will WOTC's new OGL affect D&D/Pathfinder CRPGs?

I'm open to the idea of other retroclone rulesets but I'm not really familiar with them. To be honest, making D&D rules fit into a CRPG is a difficult thing because they're obviously not designed for the format. I'm not convinced that I want to work with them again although that's not a final...

How will WOTC's new OGL affect D&D/Pathfinder CRPGs?

I appreciate the advice, but I literally am a lawyer and I know what I'm doing. The very prospect of engaging in litigation in the US (I'm Australian) would be financially crippling. It's dangerous advice to suggest that something like a declaratory judgement with costs to follow is a given when...

How will WOTC's new OGL affect D&D/Pathfinder CRPGs?

Sure, but I deliberately lift every piece of data that I can from the SRD to the extent that the document almost doubles as a quasi-manual. And even if I’m not breaching any rules, I’m not interested in litigating about it; the threat of litigation is enough to make me give it up because it’s...

How will WOTC's new OGL affect D&D/Pathfinder CRPGs?

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1074040/The_Red_Prison/ While my game is no masterpiece, I'm sure there's other hobby projects in similar boats which might never see the light of day as a result of this whole episode. In the roguelike world, I'm specifically thinking of Incursion, which is a...

How will WOTC's new OGL affect D&D/Pathfinder CRPGs?

That’s probably right but there’s still unanswered questions. What if I publish a minor update? That’s probably ok, or at least you’d hope so, but what if I publish an entirely new campaign within the current game? The unknown is a real obstacle to continued development. The reality is that I...

How will WOTC's new OGL affect D&D/Pathfinder CRPGs?

I don’t know for sure, but I suspect that it’s not authorised. You can always run the gauntlet and argue that their licence doesn’t apply, but it’s a significant risk with a massive chilling effect on game developers.

How will WOTC's new OGL affect D&D/Pathfinder CRPGs?

Here’s the parts of the new draft which I’m concerned about. Video games are excluded from the new licence: “This license only applies to printed media and static electronic files (such as epubs or pdfs) you create for use in or as tabletop roleplaying games and supplements (“TTRPGs”) and in...

How will WOTC's new OGL affect D&D/Pathfinder CRPGs?

I’ll reread it when they release the final version, but the draft revoked the old licence in its entirety, although I know they’re stepping back from this. What they have made clear though is that they never intended to license it for anything beyond ordinary tabletop play. I read their...

How will WOTC's new OGL affect D&D/Pathfinder CRPGs?

The old OGL caused me enough concerns with publishing a game based on D&D. I’m a lawyer in my day job and I still found it horrendously confused but it was uncertain enough that I was willing to risk putting out a free D&D CRPG and I’ve had that on Steam for a few years now. My interpretation...

Roguelike The Red Prison - 5e roguelike - free, early access

I've uploaded 'stable' versions of the game including the overworld to both Steam and itch now and I'm anxiously waiting for the bugs to be reported but it all seems good to me. The new version includes quests, rewards and a bunch more work on the various dungeons so it's all starting to come...

Roguelike The Red Prison - 5e roguelike - free, early access

And of course I made some mistakes in that experimental version with item generation being completely out of kilter for testing purposes along with an incorrect graphical tile for villages. Fixed now with a new version uploaded. Of course, if you want the game to gift you a game-breaking...

Roguelike The Red Prison - 5e roguelike - free, early access

Thanks so much for this feedback, it's always great to hear about how the UI works (or doesn't work) for new players because that's a big barrier for entry and it's difficult to recreate from the developer's perspective. Things like a manual are in the works, but the game is always developing...

Roguelike The Red Prison - 5e roguelike - free, early access

Thanks, I think it's really cool as well to be honest, I almost can't believe how well it came out. It's not my work of course but I commissioned an artist to do it for me and you can find more of his work here: https://www.deviantart.com/bobann/

Roguelike The Red Prison - 5e roguelike - free, early access

Hopefully I'll have it up on Steam within the next few days. My only reservation with doing it immediately is that players won't get a choice as to whether they're using the experimental features or not and sometimes the Steam audience is less understanding than the audience I typically reach...
