  1. Hay guys! Oblivion is a RPG! It really is!

Some quests in Oblivion give better consequences but lack interesting choice (i.e., the choice is do or don't). To give a couple of spoilers/examples: * When you free some enslaved ogres, they will force their former owners to work for them as slaves. * After you interrupt a dinner party by...
  2. Use based system vs. XP based ones

Luckily, I didn't play Fable but that kind of system doesn't have to possess strict archetypes if you are allowed to use skills from any group (mage, thief, fighter). Actually, at this point, I wouldn't mind a game with strict clichéd classes as long as the game had an interesting story and...

Well, I'll have to try it then. I just assumed my impression from Gormenghast was accurate for the whole series. Thanks for the tip. :)

I actually started with Gormenghast. Was that a horrible decision? :) After the BBC Gormenghast miniseries (which I didn't like), I thought I might like the books better so I asked a friend to pick up Gormenghast for me. They brought me just Gormenghast. I had seen the miniseries so I...
  5. Use based system vs. XP based ones

I like this idea. Also, a hybrid system where the use of warrior skills, thief skills, and mage skills give points to be distributed in their group might be a nice system. In that system, you could sneak to better your lockpicking but that doesn't seem as bad as the "killing rats makes you...

Sorry, I took "not straightforward" (compared to Ted's style) to mean "hard to understand" since his work is filled with ambiguity. By the way, I actually agree that his work is pretentious but for the religious works that seems to fit. You like Peake? I tried reading Gormenghast but...

After reading the Sermons of Vivec, it would have been nice to be able to ask Vivec about some of the events but his dialogue was too narrow to include in-depth topics. "Vivec, did you really compare 'spears' with the King of Rape?" ;) "Vivec, can you explain the wheel?" How is Kirkbride's...
  8. TES forums are so lame

Summary: Hannah, a member of the ESF secret police, closed his thread for sarcasm and then allowed a second thread on the same topic (minus the sarcasm) to stay open. First thread: Second thread:

Well, as you say, the lore doesn't help you play the game. It does give people, who are interested, puzzles to try to figure out like the Hidden Words in the Sermons of Vivec or the contradictory accounts of history. The book about Tsen-Ang and the book about the Gods are the two that were...

True, the lore is there for those who want to investigate the history or mythology of the world. If you are more interested in leveling, fighting, or some other activity, the lore will not help you. I must roleplay bookworms since I read the books even though it is not neccessary to play the...

I'm curious, what did Pete actually say? Nevertheless, I wouldn't trust Pete to tell me what is good or bad in a RPG. I would go to Ted Peterson or Michael Kirkbride, two of the most well-known writers, since they actually have read the lore and talk about it a lot on the ES Lore forum. :)

You and Pete Hines have no appreciation for lore? Interesting.

I'm not buying Oblivion for the fancy graphics but for the lore and world. Bethesda always make an interesting world, in my opinion, but that is something that is often ignored by those who say it is all about graphics. Why has no one critiqued the fiction released during the countdown...
  14. Use based system vs. XP based ones

I prefer use-based systems as long as the skill increases are based on the difficulty of the tasks. Succeeding at a difficult task should give more skill progress than suceeding at a simple task. For example, picking a hard lock (for your skill level) should help train your lockpicking skill...
  15. Investing in stores in Oblivion

I'm all for forcing a playing to figure things out. :) In real life, I don't possess some kind of sixth sense that allows me to see the "true" value of everything in the world. If the displayed values were estimates based on character skills (e.g., mercantile), I would have less problem with...
