I've always loved the Ultima 7 soundtrack, which is I think the compilation of a few of the previous ultimas' best tracks. The Ultima 9 soundtrack has some of the same songs, just redone for modern soundcards.

Some tracks from Throne of Bhaal were really fucking good:

Risen had some pretty relaxing and atmospheric tracks, but I don't remember any specifics ones.

The obligatory torment tracks were already posted earlier.

Some decent Icewind Dale tracks (from the time when Soule was actually good):

Some jrpg masterpieces (tracks, not games themselves, lol):

Last Remnant had a magnificent OST:

Panzer Dragoon Azel (you can also listen to Anu Orta Veniya by the same singer if you like this song):

Only thing I like about the Arcanum soundtrack is the opening tune. And most things mentioned here aren't really RPG's either. But for JRPG's, probably FF3 or Chrono Trigger. For CRPG's maybe Ultima 6 and Fallout 1. They've got more than one tune you can listen to, unlike stuff like BG and IWD's that usually just have the theme or something. There were also some C64 'rpgs' with good tunes.

BROFIST! I completely agree. The game has fantastic atmosphere, and the music fits it perfectly.

Ultima 9 (No, not a typo)

I will second this so that you don't feel so alone. I really enjoyed many of the thematic tracks of Ultima 9, even though there wasn't much of it. What it did do right is make itself very easy to listen to (including on repeat) with a balance of ambient quality and melody, and properly evocative of the regions they associated with.

Favourites include Moonglow, Skara brae, Gargoyles and Buccaneer's Den.

Edit: Also just needed to add, the "Positive" versions of the songs are mostly all shit and lacking in the character of the others. "Negative" versions are where it's at.

The night music in BG wasn't bad at all, much better than the theme imo.

Listen to the Risen harbor town ambient music:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2lEu0FZydY

Or the Gothic 3 Trelis music:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lkc7RqeUqxw

Or the In Extremo performance in Gothic 1:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OU3LR7nNjd0

Whenever I listen to those, I am reminded how (with one or two notable exceptions) no other game is able offer the same level of immersion as Piranha Bytes' games. Unfortunately, most games out there are made for retards with the attention span of a fruit fly.

Arcanum had a great soundtrack, but it was a little repetitive at times. The tracks that were there were usually good, it just didn't have much variety, so you'd hear the same theme over and over again. I really liked the Mask of the Betrayer soundtrack, and I'm surprised it isn't getting much love here. Really great stuff.

And of course obvious ones like VtmB, Fallout 1/2, Torment, etc.

Except for the minor fact that Ys I & II way back in the PCE days kicked it's ass. Also not really 100% sure they meant jRPGs that are more action than RPG

The two that really stick out for me is Diablo and Divine Divinity. The ambience from those soundtracks are top notch
