Can GD be more heavily moderated?

Lke what?
More useless opinions.
Arguments and counter arguments.
There have been over a million topics posted in GD.
Personally, I prefer the lulz.

Spam threads are better than your threads.

Decent discussion about world news or whatever. I'm not sure if it has always been like this, but the local gd is a haven of circle jerking and one liners. And most threads are simple spam that would be locked in any decent forum.

Like I said, it is so morose that few people even bother to write more than 4 words when replying to something. Either that or they copy and paste image links or old nemes.

Oh well, still better than bethesda's skyrim forum where I got moderated for telling some guy he has bad grammar. :smug:

Yeah great idea, I'll just hover my mouse cursor over to this exclamation mark icon right next to the quote button... oh wait...

Of course I could just PM every subforum mod whenever someone starts spamming (TBH I was severely tempted when I-forgot-who a few months ago starting imagespamming worthwhile threads in Workshop), but I somehow get the feeling that won't make me too popular among said mods. The only other alternatives are a) PMing an oldfag with links and "please report these posts" (then again if I'm PMing these particular oldfags it's because we're on good terms and I'd like it to stay that way) or b) posting in a thread and hoping someone notices sooner than later, which is what I did back in that spamming spree mentioned earlier.

tl;dr I can't wait until March. Spammers shall suffer; spammer shall all suffer :smug:

No.

The unfiltered potential for epic lulz to emerge at times amidst the crap, something that would be completely suppressed with tyranny, is the only reason I might still bother to check GD, and what makes it different from the GDs on other corners of the Internet that are all about circle-jerking, HUGHALHUGHALHUGHALHUGHALHUGHALHUGHALHUGHALHUGHAL of moderators, and nothing more than that. And trust me, "Why niggers are savage #9000" is still more amusing than circle-jerking GDs.

The presence of a more intellectual crowd on the other hand is what makes it different from /b/

Why are you posting from a proxy, Bubb? What are you trying to hide, Bubb? Why is it that only larpingdude and Schattenjäger have ever used the same proxy, Bubb?

Is that a coincidence, Bubb?

I don't get it, are you really that dense? I never met a forum moderator who wasn't familiar with the concept of open proxies before. What I find specially odd is that I'm using "hidemyass", which is probably the world's most used open web proxy. I mean, I'm surprised the list of users who post from the same IP isn't bigger.

I never use my real IP, and I don't feel compelled to do it now that I know this site is full of trannies, nazis and shock material. I'm not even sure what to say, I've never been banned before, and as far as I know it is normal to give out a warning before doing such thing.

Why not just ban proxies right away, anyhow? You would lose tons of new users, surely, but I don't get why let a proxy user register, post and then come up with this.

If my account is reactivated I would not mind posting again in that thread about AT, if not, I guess I wish you good luck with your silly little inquisition.
For the record, Hidemyass (and a bunch of associated open proxies) were on the ban list for a long, long, long time here at the Codex. Under normal circumstances, Bubb never would've been able to register with Hidemyass. However, after X Larpingdude alts and so on, we banned it. And it's staying banned.

The only reason it got removed is because I was mucking around and cleaned out a bunch of IPS from the banned IP lists at the end of Jan (it got really long and we had no idea what was from what). I also disabled the proxy check on registration to run some testing. It's now back. Bubb's account has not been banned - he can post whenever he likes, just likely not from a proxy.

If you wish to register on the Codex, you won't be able to use a proxy. We also have a list of banned free e-mail addresses (those 10 min throw away ones) so if you want to register, you'll have to use a legit e-mail too. We can (and do) add exemptions for usernames to overcome the proxy block on registration - but there's not much I can do about open proxies on the ban list.

This is a result of too much hassle dealing with alts and dickheads over the years for me to care about losing the 3 people who think the internets is stealing their porn / google is watching them.

I fully support the good fight against alts, just let me remark: I've been reading the site since 2006. When I tried to register, I got a message to the effect there was a problem and I had to contact the administrators directly. The point is (and I might be remembering it wrong, it's been quite a while), the explanation of why the site won't let me register sounded rather vague and I wasn't sure what the actual problem was (I wasn't using a proxy, so probably my gmail account?) -- had there been a brief explanation of the reasons and solutions like you give here, I probably would have tried to fix it/write to the admins (instead, I just gave the registration a shot every six months or so until it worked). Like I say, I don't remember it all that well and may have just been lazy.

They can request an exemption. The page that complains about the proxy links you to the contact form and tells you what to do. If you cannot into following simple instructions, when you obviously can into proxies, then you cannot into the Codex.

I wrote another message at the contact form, but to make things short and public: I post from work, I need to use proxies. And I sincerely doubt I'm the only one here using them, unless off course this site has a smaller userbase than it seems to have.

I think it is much simpler to ban trolls and alts than to go through the trouble of banning proxies and losing potential new members.

Like in said in the other message, not many would go through the trouble of solving the problem and becoming active on the board again like I did. It just so happens that this is the only place I found where people appreciate and have recent discussion on an old and obscure adventure game. Most others would simply register on any of the several other rpg forums out there.

No, I don't think GD should be heavily moderated. At all. Moderate the other boards to death all you want but GD is where you find the porn and the lulz. And the Retardo to be threads.

Prevention is always simpler than trying to find a cure after the fact, so no.

Besides I don't get the big deal about using proxies from work. I'm posting this very message from work. I fully realize any of the admins could be a dick and post my IP for all to see. I'm trusting that they're not. So far it seems to have worked fine.

If you find a proxy that seventeen other people who decided to be assholes haven't posted from, chances are you'll be fine.

Trolls and alts are proxies. Fun-Fact™: If I ban a troll, how do I do that? Well, I could ban the username. GREAT! Then they just re-register with a new name. End effect? None. Ok, so let's ban the IP. Well, it's a proxy, they just pick another one and register again. Now, if I check for and restrict registration from a large portion of known proxies... and then build an exemption system so that legitimate users can get through (but only if they care enough to jump a few hoops)... Then those users who really do want to contribute something can still register and post and those users who are assholes trying to register to post asinine comments that aren't worth the trouble will go away. Problem solved! Alll of this happened in that order too by the way, about two - three years ago. For the record, all blocked registration attempts are recorded, so I have a fair idea of how many legitimate people we've lost (assuming usernames like "dragons rule orcs are gay" and "Ivar The Boner" are not legitimate). It's not many.

You really shouldn't visit the Codex from work though. Really, we're performing a public service by preventing this.

Ok, point taken...

It's just that most forums I frequented don't ban proxies, so I thought this was out of the ordinary. But if psychotic trolls are attacking this site and simply banning them doesn't do the trick I understand the necessity of doing this.

Wasn't it Bryce who was registering multiple alts per day, sometimes driving to different cities to get around IP range bans?
