I only played the demo of GSB but Dominions III's hands off battles are much more interesting than this.
Because
a) You have more options for battle plans due to the magic system (and those options are more interesting/dramatic rather than just slight modifiers to numbers)
b) Tweaking your gear has much more interesting special effects, rather than just slightly modifying some numbers. Rarely in Dom 3 do you pick an item because it does 5% more DPS, instead you're looking at tactically interesting effects, like "A shield which entangles opponents with vines vs a shield which strikes everyone who hits you with a fire attack".
c) Putting the battles in the context of a larger campaign makes them much more interesting and means that it matters if you win handily or win but lose many of your dudes
Hands off battles are actually a big strength of Dominions III, although it could use a little better scripting.
It's just unfortunate that Dom III is more of a lifestyle than a game.
