Codex 2013 Codex 2014 PC RPG Website of the Year, 2015 Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire MCA Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 BattleTech Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
I'm slowly uploading images to my gallery, so I'll be leaving my amateurish feedback in this post. Will edit it once (and if) there is more feedback on my part.

1. All in all, the closer the interface gets to Imageshack's batch uploader or imgboot's uploading interface (without the 5 image limit, of course), the better. That said,
2. Why don't I get the links to embed right away? I have to either a) input manually or b) click on "db" -> get to, say, the http://www.rpgcodex.net/gallery.php?image=3458 screen -> it is only here that I can get the proper BBcode (under "Full-size:"). And then either repeat the same procedure for the next four images or alter the code manually. Banal, shit, boring. It'd be much better to have access to the full-size BBCode to every image automatically on the same page, right after the images have been uploaded.
3. Where're mah "Next" and "Previous image" buttonz on, say, http://www.rpgcodex.net/gallery.php?image=3458, eh?
4. The option to drag and drop multiple images or at least to "Browse" -> select multiple images would be cool. + My updates usually contain 100-150 images (or sometimes even more for my FF LP), so uploading them by 5 at a time is a pain in this little ass. But you already said you're working to change that.
5. There's no "album/image created on" info. Personally I don't need it, but generally it's a nice thing to have.
6. Why the compression when uploading? Not that I care much about image quality, but still. My 150 kb jpegs get compress to 40 kb ones. What if I wanted to keep them in higher quality?
7. I'd really, really like the images to keep the original names in the links. E.g., if I upload "uukrul025.jpg", I'd prefer to access and embed it as "http://www.rpgcodex.net/gallery/uukrul025.jpg" or "http://www.rpgcodex.net/gallery/3458_uukrul025.jpg", not simply as "http://www.rpgcodex.net/gallery/3458.jpg". I track screenshots in an update by their numbers, which I can't do if those get omitted in the links.

I wouldn't compress images unless they go beyond say 200kb, in which case I'd offer a prompt first asking whether the user wants to have them compressed to 200kb on our side, abort and convert them himself or upload them in their original size if over 200kb...

The buttons in the gallery do not show up in Chrome, though they do work in Firefox. Strange.
Are you logged in with those other browsers...?

What game is this image from?

2113_thumb.jpg

And, an option to upload from a URL would be neat.

Option already exists.

... and thanks for that list of stuff Crooked Bee. I'll look at adding in all of it. RE: Image file sizes, check the NOTES page when you upload. I was thinking of allowing you to tweak the graphic settings so you could choose what quality you want your JPEGs, whether you want 256 color palette PNGs and so on. The short answer though was that JPEG compressed at quality 60 (the default) still keeps a large majority of its image quality but drastically reduces the file size (Given you're limited by space, smaller image files == more images you can have).

Chroma subsampling on and quality below 85 makes for some pretty ugly jpg artifacts and colour degradation though. Especially if you're using it to recompress already compressed jpgs again. Compression's really only meant to be applied once on uncompressed format images. Then again, I'm allergic to badly compressed images, most people don't even know what compression does or notice the degradation...

Insert clever insult here
Ok, tested it. My findings are probably quite similar to Crooked Bee's, but:

-Uploading works quickly which is nice but batch-uploading is a must.

-Digging image links from under the thumbnails is unfortunately very slow and cumbersome. It would be best if after uploading, the page would give you all the links, with codes added, and only after that you could go to see the thumbnails. That way I could keep one tab open with the thumbnails visible and write around the image-links in another.

-Thumbnail page sort of jumps around between having five or four pictures per row - starts out with five but as soon as I mouse over them, the page drops into having four of them per row. A minor issue but was confusing at first.

-The images do not remain in the correct order - dunno what happened but the thumbnails did not remain in the order that I had uploaded them, neither were they in alphabetical order.

-Quality is just fine

Resampling plus recompressing?
What's the point of implementing the gallery at all then?

How about a setting that keeps shockporn from showing up in the gallery thumbnail on the front page? Or is that just the kind of site we are now?

Are you sure it was the codex main page, and not when viewing the Gallery (such as clicking on the Galley button)?

Regular user stuff does get rotated on the main page, just less often it would seem. So, yeah, occasionally someone will get a lemon party or goatse, as they are in the user albums.

My spasmodic F5ing hasn't yet picked one up yet though, but plenty of other user content.

This is an issue with CSS, floats and different resolutions. There's no easy guaranteed way of checking resolution in PHP so it's designed to handle 1024 and up. The higher you go, the more images appear on a row but that means they pop around and sometimes don't line up correctly. I could mandate 3 per row but then on high resolutions you have a very narrow list of images with lots of blank space on either side.

It's the second complaint about seeing shock porn on the main page now:

I figured regular user stuff wouldn't get rotated onto the main page, but I don't know where goatse would be coming from. Haven't seen anything pornographic yet.
Yes, user albums were getting rotated in. I wanted to see how long it would take. Not very long as usual.

... and why am I not surprised that it's coming from Trash's album?

I did think of an adult image tagging system but it's simple for now to just take user albums out of rotation.

Pretty sure I just clicked on my bookmark to the main page and 'o hai guise' or whatever with the chick puking on the guys dick was there. I stick to the main page and the forums, so I'm not sure where else it could have been - I definitely wasn't on the gallery page.

Any progress in implementing batch upload, DU? Or have you given up on that?
