Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate the Codex since I began to live...

Not only does those screenshots bring back memories of all the fun I had in that game, but they also reminded me of how awesome it was to play the game! I used to explore... go to the far reaches of the galaxy, run out of energy and just sit and wait until the solar panels could collect enough energy to allow for another jump which would bring me closer to civilization...

Sigh.

What the hell kind of games are there now a days that even comes close to EV: Nova's greatness? Space Rangers 2? I find that fucking hard to believe, but it was on sale on Impulse for about 4 euro so I bought it... and here's you're chance to let me down by informing me that this game is nothing like EV: Nova... at all.

Go ahead, Codexia. Bring me closer to my inevitable suicide.

it's turn based so at least it has a superior combat system than this warpamole twitchy shit made for consoles

I've already played through EV: Nova so many times that I know the entire game from the inside and out.

If only they could invent an amnesia-inducing device... wait! I know! I'll be a main character in The Witcher / Planescape: Torment! That will surely sort out my pesky memories right quick!

probably closest game ive played that comes close to nova, combat wise anyways. exploration is linear and works like a roguelike p much, with you going down farther and farther "into the core of the galaxy". Has quests though, and factions.

worth checking out though if you havent

Yeah, Nova had the most bells and whistles, but it also had the worst writing and world design, with telepathic ships and overwrought storylines about your secret family legacy and how you singlehandedly take on swarms of pirate henchmen. I enjoyed the first game the most, even though it's the simplest, and EV Override was decent as well.

Eh, telepath ships was interesting, and the whole storyline of being enslaved. Although I usually ended up using captured pirate vessels, like some black deltawing and the big tub with some kind of lightning gun and a few times I juiced up that huge cargo ship with rotating barrels around it and blew stuff up.

SR2 is nothing like EV:N. But it's still a good game in its own right. On the topic of games that are nothing like Escape Velocity Nova but quite ok in their own right, you could try HArdwar if you can find a version with all the wonderful B-movie FMV intact. Or you could go through the sticky thread -> http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/indie-space-sims-post-em-if-you-find-em.5835/

Hey, I remember this thread. Boy was the OP a faggot or what- Oh wait.

I was happy with SR2, but... eh... I still miss Nova. I'll give your suggestion a go after I'm done with my real life shit for the day, Ulm.

Still haven't played this. $30, oh wow, is it worth $30 fanboys?

Yes. Aside from its prequels, there's nothing out there like it, except for NAEV... although Starfarer might scratch a similar itch.

It's truly one of the greatest computer games of all time, managing to admirably combine an extremely well written, non-linear, multi-path adventure with space trader/ship customization/shmup gameplay. It's the very definition of a hidden gem, all but forgotten these days.

How does Starfarer stack up to EV?

Another game that's completely different but people might want to check out is Ares/Antares. You can get it free here. It's a pretty fun but simplistic overhead space shooter/strategy game.

Beats me. I won't be playing Starfarer until it's finished or nearly finished. I don't want to ruin it for myself through alpha/beta testing.

You can read their updates to see what's currently implemented.

inspired by this thread i decided to give evn another try, after the not so enthusiast attempt some years ago.
played for some time, nothing really special, then i got this vell-os mission where i'm supposed to be escorted by some carriers. the mission ended but i didn't get the following one, so now i'm stuck on a sub-par ship and can't access bbs anymore.
this game doesn't want to be loved.

edit.
it always works like this: as soon as i complain my problem magically stops to exist. somehow, on the 20th time i landed on the planet i got the following mission.

Yeah, EV:Nova is a bit fucked that way. The main plot missions are some random BS that you can end up falling into.

Dude, have you played Vangers? It's not in space, but otherwise can be close (or not so close) to what you are looking for.

now that i have a more recent impression of the game, my questio is: what's really so special about this game?
99% of the galaxy is filler/void, very very little variety in ships and weapons, all the missions are "go there" or "kill", combat is not strategy nor twitch based, there are as many bugs as in your average x3...
really, help me: why all this love? what did i miss?
