As long as no animated avatars are allowed, I can cope with pretty much anything.

(It would still be cool if we could access the old archives more directly though)

Any wannabe artist can tell you that creativity loves constraint.

The creativity lies in what you make with the selection of avatars you are offered.
Think of all the "You are not Melcar" posts. And Andyman being a horse.

As far as I'm concerned, I chose my av from one of my first cRPG. I searched for a representation of what I am. I found a bearded and balding old man with a joyous look. Because that's how I want to be seen. Just putting my pic would have been easier for sure. But not creative.

A 2008 newfag would feel that way, yes. I tell you, in my days we didn't have none of these fancy "custom avatars". No anime, either. No sir, you had ten or twenty galleries to chose from and woe betide you if you picked one someone already claimed.

I'll only agree with this proposal if it also includes the elimination of all anime avatars from the gallery.

And fixing the character 2d sprites to not look weird under the only 1:1 ratio limitation for avatar image sizes as well.

if you didn't want anime avatars, you should have donated more towards not having them. stop whining and deal with it.
What kind of logic is that?

Unlike certain people, I'm not a cretin whose money can be easily swayed through the most cheap methods. I'd never pay because of something as stupid as what will and will not be avatars in an Internet forums. For that is worse than paying for horse armor DLC. I just made that comment to point out why this thread is so full of fail.

Custom avatars need not necessarily be detrimental to the glory and prestige of the Codex. Imagine, for example, If more users were to embrace the higher cause of the monocle. Rather than becoming an obstacle, I would wager that distinguished faces such as the ones below would serve only to reinforce the superior image of this blessed Order.

Your entire av's a monocle. All that's missing is a fancy chain.

I tried shopping one onto mine, but it didn't work out so well. Maybe it's time for a change.

I have a perfect middle ground. Put back the old avatar system but allow the option of custom avatars - after a moderation process. So, let's say, people with 1,000 posts+ are allowed to submit an image for approval. If approval is granted, then that picture is made their avatar. If they want to change to another custom avatar, another process is required. And you can have like a 6 month minimum time limit or whatever for changing from one custom avatar to another.
