Have you ever experienced a strong adrenaline rush while gaming? If so, what types of games triggered it?
The term adrenaline rush is thrown around a lot in gaming circles, but I'm not convinced it is always used literally.
I'm talking about the true physical fight or flight adrenaline rush, like what you might experience from a real life fight, sports moment or situation where you narrowly avoided serious injury.
I voted "Yes, rarely".
As far as I remember, I have only experienced a true adrenaline rush from player vs player combat in multiplayer online RPGs. Mostly Ultima Online, but occasionally in PVP situations in other MMORPGs as well.
I believe that the characteristics which may have contributed to this were:
- No save game
- Playing against other humans
- Significant consequences for death
- Social environment where the unit I controlled functioned as a digital avatar of myself, not just a character in a game.
I've never gotten a similar adrenaline rush from a pure action game, except possibly (I don't remember for sure) when I played in a competitive FPS clan briefly. If I did get one there, it wasn't very strong or very often. Maybe only in super high stakes situations?
What about you guys?
