I'm sure the water will be animated. They can animate it in their 3D rendering program and export it as a short "movie" looped in game. It's more work for the artists and more time needed for rendering but the effect is well worth it.

Everything looks great.
Except for that FUCKING STRONGHOLD that is the way!
I wouldn't mind a stronghold per se, but it's a $500k obstacle for a bigger world.
Why did JS do that? *shrugs*
He could have went with a modding kit, which is certainly doable with 500k.

Some of the comments on the forums regarding the stronghold made me sick!

Obsidian might as well have went with romances for $3M.

if all current backers add 5$ they're very short of the 3 mil target, so that shouldn't take too much to achieve...
Or everyone joins the Obsidian order for just $8.

I'm at 250$ + 30$ shipping, so I won't be giving another cent.
It's already way too much for me.

Well, to say something positive, what I really liked was this part of the video that said this; I'm paraphrasing:

"We're making the areas the same way we made them in Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale."

How awesome is that? Making them the old-fashioned way that leads to that illusion of hand-drawn, beautiful areas and lets them be nice and huge and flat. Don't you guys miss that? I sure do, so whatever your opinion on anything else may be, if that's not something to be happy about then I don't know what is.

 Stronghold = Romances

I don't see why this game needs a modding kit - is it because Wasteland 2 had one? They both use the same engine so I don't understand what the purpose behind it would be, it's somewhat superfluous. More importantly though, why does a storyfag game need a modding kit? Waste of money, if you ask me.

How do they animate all this stuff in 2D ?
Can someone with more knowledge about this comment on the possibility of the waterfall and water being animated?
Cycling colours in the palette

Original, and a LOT of other very beautiful oldschool pictures here.

Palette cycling looks great in low res graphics. It would be a funny project to try something like this in a modern high-res image :) Probably wouldn't look too good...

Wow, I completely forgot! Was the water animated?

Just add the money required. Don't change your tier. They'll get back to you.

thanks man, never used KS before, they should make this kind of stuff clear...

This "add-on" stuff is new actually. Obsidian invented it.

Wow, amazing. almost makes me want to forget that IE didn't have environmental deformation, which probably applies to this project too. Anyone know how many of these 'scenes' that Obsidian artists have to create, how many were there for BG2?

I played much ToEE lately and I am a big fan of old-school game mechanics. But I have to admit that while playing ToEE I always wanted to explore the world by rotating/zooming the camera. And in combat I wanted to adjust the camera rotation to have a better tactical view for my archer/casters. But none of those features are possible with 2D backgrounds.
Sure, screenshots of 2D games look obviously better than captured 3D scenes (because you can use Photoshop on the final result). But as soon as you start to walk in this world with a moving camera, the difference of the immersion is tremendous. And after playing 3D games since 15 years now, I am not sure if a static 2D background will create the same degree of immersion for me ... in 2014.
Technically, it's definitely not easy to integrate 3D character and particles into a static prerendered 2D background. You have to save the depth buffer of the whole scene, otherwise the sorting issues can cause more effort than using 3D in the first place.

Well I actually enjoy a static camera a lot, it just plays much nicer. Not having to fiddle and having the maximum (in the sense that because the camera is static, it is not possible to gain more) of information on your screen at all times is a relief. Just compare the gameplay of the IE games with NWN. The tradeoff for rotating and zooming is a whole gameworld in super ugly 3D, and that is a high price. I'd rather have worlds made in 2D.

What do you need environmental deformation for in an RPG? Which RPG even had this? :?

I'm not actually a big fan of this. One thing I loved about Fallout was that I had to use my imagination to create my own details.

You didn't have to put shit smears on the mirrors in New Reno's bathrooms, you could just imagine that they were there. Or if you wanted to imagine that the Casino bosses made sure the toilets were sanitary despite their old appearance, you could do that as well. Not roleplaying as much as just letting your imagination fill in the blanks.

The more is less approach is what I wanted with regards to art and graphics.

That screenshot looks awesome. I love how the grass (not the trees) are done, in addition to the obvious like the statues.

Second city would be nice, I think there's a decent chance for it.

I feel like I'm the only one here who's not intoxicated by this screenshot. Sure, it's purty, but am I the only one who is worried about how rtwp combat will play out at this angle? Because it looks really, really, really uncomfortable for it. Like, a "potential clusterfuck"-grade uncomfortable, for me, at least.

I VIOLENTLY disagree about wanting camera controls in ToEE, I never felt the need for this at all.

Likewise with this scene, I am instantly drawn in. I picture my party wandering around there and it all just fits. The tilt is more like the IE games than ToEE, which will probably be fine for RTwP. Then I remember it's RTwP and I shed a single, frozen tear.

This looks fantastic I must say. Quite impressed. OBSIDIAN DON'T FUCK UP THE COMBAT YOU HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BE THE SAVIOUR YOU ALWAYS COULD HAVE BEEN BUT FOR FUCKS SAKE DO NOT FUCK UP THE COMBAT!!!!
