I'm kind of tempted to scale the ion engine up to Rockomax™ brand diameter and increase thrust, weight, fuel consumption and power consumption by a factor 10. And do the same for a 7000-unit xenon tank (x10 full/dry mass) and a megabattery /x10 capacity+weight. That'd let me do a decent-sized ion cluster without killing my KSP with wobble and absurd part counts. :P

Maybe make a Mega Solar Panel as well... It could be cool to have a giant solar sail. Or just a x25 power+weight rockomax-diameter nuclear powerplant as a mega-RTG.

I wasn't really interested in the lazor plugin besides the docking cam until I realized you could install the camera seperately from the rest of the system. No extra fiddly parts, just a right-click menu function on docking port to pop up a camera window.
screenshot7qbf.png

Basically, the big dotted + is the direction is pointing. Big white + is the direction your target is pointed. So line those up and the ports are parallel. Red + is your relative velocity to target. So line up white + on dotted plus, then line up docking port on the dotted +, then line up red + on everything else and you're perfectly lined up with the other port. It's basically a chase cam without your ship being in the way and with the navball waypoints superimposed on top.

Docking no longer requires tons and tons of moving the camera about

Dyrena Munar Rover, surface exploration in accordance with Markzist-Keninist ideology principle

Craft: Dyrena Rover utilizing Atomic Motor orbital/descent stage
Mission: Munar soft landing, surface study of Mun’s geological features

karuzelski.png

Proletariusze!

It comes with great excitement that I announce new revolutionary SAP mission into Cosmos. After much research engineer build Mun Rover, remote control machine we will drive on Munar surface. Yes, you hear right. Polant shall land rover on Mun, paving way forward for Cosmonaut landing in future. These indeed great days for socialism!

polant6-01.png

Following successful Kolonez Rover project engineer focus to develop smaller Dyrena Rover. Expect new symmetric structure allow easy landing on Mun compare to heavy Kolonez.

polant6-02.png

Design prove capable of traverse many terrain type. Regardless if it grass or sand of beach. This very good, not sure what Mun surface is. All kind of theory what it made of, could be rock but many think it may be composed of soap bubble.

polant6-03.png

Can even climb up hill. Kilesia-1 see many hill so this ability necessary.

polant6-04.png

Occasionally it jump off hill top and explode upon landing. That not flaw that feature of design!

polant6-05.png

After many test engineer find optimal pattern of panel that does not result in destruction. At least not as often it break in other pattern.

polant6-06.png

Speed stress test indicate rover capable of travel over 80 meter per second using RCS afterbuner. Panel shatter at high speed but it appear surface panel sufficient for operation at full power of engine.

polant6-07.png

Unfortunate speed test ended premature by sea. Design very promising though! Focus on develop lander now.

*I would like to mention that this was made before the 0.18.2. RCS change. There was a bug that allowed you to squeeze nearly infinite amounts of energy out of RCS thrusters as fuel use was tied to how close the thruster was to the center of mass. People made very small probes that could travel across the whole system with ease on one or two small RCS tanks. This was basically a divide by near zero issue.

They fixed that and it broke most stock-part rover designs a bit as RCS is now very unreliable for both propulsion and turning. Before that I could have like two maybe three solid minutes of afterburner using RCS which was very good for climbing hills, now it’s more like 20 seconds. Oh well, 0.19 will probably have proper stock electric rover wheels added and I managed to make RCS-less rover designs anyway.

polant6-08.png

Turn out make lander not as easy as thought.

polant6-09.png

While look good all attempt at get off lander result in capsize. Need new idea.

polant6-10.png

Some rover even explode, good thing intern close to test area. They put rover back real quick, it need to go to Mun after all.

polant6-11.png

Try other approach, separate rover from landing engine just before hit ground. Initial test result not good.

polant6-12.png

Smaller engine bring back optimism, however first test still failure because of software error that make ASAS not turn on. Many programmer sent to reeducation as result.

polant6-13.png

Prepare next test, drive rover away from launch pad so it not fly into tower. Launch in five… four… two… one…

polant6-14.png

Software patch make ASAS work, rover stable and not flip over in air again.

polant6-15.png

Land safely mere meter from some structure. We not sure what structure do, it always there before SAP cosmodrome created.

polant6-16.png

Diagnostic indicate rover intact after land. Now SAP closer to Mun land. To complete diagnostic we drive rover into countryside and make it go real fast.

polant6-17.png

It explode again, intern put it back up and plan launch. Need new rocket first though.

polant6-18.png

First rocket work well, apart from major unstable trajector.

polant6-19.png

Also apart from crash and explosion. Apparent we need add winglet or rocket not fly straight.

polant6-20.png

Winglet improve flight, surprise solution not add more rocket. Look like rover get to Mun now!

polant6-21.png

Turn out structural reinforcement known as glue not make rocket as rigid as hope. It fall apart due material stress. Need stronger materials.

polant6-22.png

Also use opportunity to add more rocket. Rover sure to reach Mun now!

polant6-23.png

It reach high altitude, still need orbit burn.

polant6-24.png

Also use new revolution in technology, Nuclear Thermal Engine power by atom fission. Atom energy used for peaceful purpose of spread workers revolution and abolishing capitalist exploitation!

Get technology from Ewa and Maria reactor research and with help of socialist brothers in Koviet Union. They lend some design document and one engine for study:

rd0410.jpg

*The LV-N Atomic Rocket Motor also simply known as a NERVA (after the name for the American nuclear thermal engine project) or Nuclear Engine, is a very good engine for orbital operations and landing on (nearly) airless bodies. As long as the lander is not to heavy. This technology was planned to be used to get people to Mars in both the American and Soviet plans, however it was never tested in orbit. Ground-based prototypes prove it does work and the KSP parameter values of the NERVA are identical to the ones of the american prototype.

The plan was also to use these for final stages of future Lunar vessels and the Saturn V. Development by NASA was scrapped after Nixon's administration scrapped manned Mars mission plans and the space program got scaled back. The soviets did the same as a response. And thus like the Ion Engine and Aerospike this revolutionary technology will have to wait for decades until it ever gets used in space. Although the Ion Engine and Aerospike eventually got more attention.

polant6-25.png

New engine much efficient, have more ISP than regular chemical engine in vacuum of Cosmos. However it heavy, very inefficient in atmosphere and thrust not spectacular either. Still it more powerful than Ion Engine so burn take less time but still efficient.

Also new trajector take rover to Mun encounter.

polant6-27.png

Rover fly over Munar surface. Prepare to get it to site spotted by Kilesia probe, picture make us think it safe for landing. Unless unknown Mun creature come and eat rover, then we need pack weapon to defend Rover from ferocious beast.

JIAWL.gif

Artist make animate drawing of said beast. Believe many lurk in Munar cave.

polant6-28.png

Eventual rover set on orbit over target.

polant6-29a.png

Begin decelerate burn to land. Also notice filthy intern make coffee stain on pictures! He severe punished for offense and crime against socialist science!

polant6-30a.png

After kill all horizontal velocity nuclear rocket module point down to slow fall. Lack of atmosphere mean no parachute work. This make land harder however lack of atmosphere mean getting back from surface of Mun easier.

Also more coffee smudge on picture, ugh these intern these day. They not know how to handle science photograph!

polant6-31.png

Rover getting close to ground, can see shadow. Beginning to fire small propulsion module to safe soft land.

polant6-32.png

ASAS computer work good and rover maintain right orientation for land.

*Did I mention how hard landing like this is? I crashed the damn thing about 10 times before actually landing in one piece. Luckily though I figured out a better safe way to land rovers and other things. Well two ways actually, the second one in particular is very :obviously: But I’ll explain and show that in another update.

polant6-33.png

Rover about to touch surface at about four meter per second. Expect wheel strong enough to survive.

*Just because the gravity is smaller does not mean impacting the surface at 10+ meters per second is a safe thing to do.

polant6-34.png

For some reason rover flip after wheel touch ground, this not good! Attempt flip rover.

*Probably happened because the Mun’s surface is solid rather than covered in soft dust or whatever. This means you bounce off it and because the gravity is low the force of the bounce is sufficient to send you flying a bit. Yeah, so landing with as little velocity as possible is vital to a safe Munar landing. Especially with such a light lander like this one.

polant6-35.png

Attempt not go as plan, both flag of Polant fall off and explode. Should not make flag out of volatile material next time.

*This is Kerbal Space Program, everything explodes!

polant6-36.png

Eventual RCS thruster flip rover back! Lose most solar panel however they not really needed. Engineer plan for redundant part backup.

polant6-37.png

Check sensor, gravity sensor work and show gravity 1/9th of Kerbin's!

polant6-38.png

Atmosphere not present, this confirm Kilesia reading.

polant6-40.png

Temperature a bit chill but tolerable.

polant6-41.png

Engage Ion Engine and drive to explore Munar surface. Know of interesting ar… I mean two rock. Spotted by Kilesia, but they just regular rock only bigger. Nothing suspicious, no.

polant6-42.png

Drive by crashed atomic engine stage, many engine complete destroy. Not worry, radiation levels expect to be only 1% above lethal level. Pretty sure it not kill any Munar animal.

polant6-43.png

Driver report safe speed for munar drive is about 10 meter per second, faster speed cause rover jump much.

*The rover mods now present are a bit popamole as they apply “magic force” to neutralize the low gravity and make you stick to the ground better. This thing is 100% stock so it applies no such force and is thus very likely to start flying if it goes too fast over a hill. I don't need no popamole "magic force" in my Newtonian physics space sandbox :obviously:

polant6-44.png

After some drive we realize important thing, the target is other way. We turn around rover.

polant6-45.png

Instrument detect Kilesia-1 orbiting over horizon. Rover move in it direction as it go in same direction as target.

polant6-46.png

Big hill ahead, luckily rover equip to deal with hill.

polant6-47.png

Use some RCS to climb up hill as it too steep for use of Ion Engine only.

polant6-48a.png

Eventually rover get over steep part and on top. Unfortunate more coffee stain made by damn intern make photo dirty!

polant6-50a.png

Coffee stain get bigger! Cursed intern now guarantee to spend rest of life studying diet of Polar Bear based on excrement.

polant6-51a.png

See many star on horizon, including “Potato Wagon” constellation. Lack of atmosphere make for good observatory place.

polant6-52a.png

Eventual rover reach target after almost 10 kilometer journey. Take a while but it now study two rock here.

karuzelski.png

Towarzysze!

News are good! Dyrena Rover make successful land and study of Mun surface. Before end of year we send cosmonaut to Mun. Also all people found hoarding toilet paper will face the death penalty for treason. Soon Polant will grow many potato among star!

MANY DECADES LATER

koloszanski.png

Good evening, many remember the first Munar landing of Polant. The Dyrena rover was a major step forward in the SAP space program. The landing was supposedly transmitted in real time, however in reality it was recorded a day before it was transmitted. That 24 hour gap was enough for the communist government to alter some of the footage using sophisticated techniques.

The “Mysteries of Communist Polant” team has managed to uncover the unaltered images along with some that were deemed too difficult to alter and hidden from the public. This is the first time these are shown on television.

polant6-30.png

The Dyrena rover landing near the previously discovered by the Kilesia-1 probe Arch-shaped object.

polant6-50.png

The rover moving towards the Arch which is just beyond the hills somewhere on the horizon.

polant6-52.png

The strange Munar object is close.

polant6-53.png

The scale of the Arch becomes apparent as the rover is just next to it. It attempts to drive through the Arch.

2001_screenshot_stargate_00.jpg

2001_screenshot_stargate_01.jpg

2001_screenshot_stargate_02.jpg

We’re not sure how these images tie into this whole thing. Was it a computer glitch? Or did the Rover pick up transmission from an unknown alien entity? Did it see something beyond our capability to comprehend? Those questions remain unanswered.

polant6-54.png

However it did emerge safely on the other side so perhaps this is all a joke, an elaborate trick setup by the communists to baffle whoever uncovers the documents. Perhaps a way to distract and confuse any western spies that might have gained access to these photographs.

As you can see the scale of the object is pretty massive, after all it is visible from orbit.

polant6-55.png

The rover was left just next to the strange object, probably after it was determined that a primitive robot like it was not able to uncover any new details. We now believe that the real goal of the mission was not to simply land and study the Mun, but to locate and mark the location of this Munarch for future expeditions.

Rest assured dear viewers, the team of “Mysteries of Communist Polant” will uncover the truth about the classified Arch object.

To be continued.

Can Polant land Potato Bros on the Mun? Is there a strange similar object in Jool orbit? Will the ASAS start singing Daisy Bell before it kills all of the Cosmonauts just as they get near the Arch? How many more things will go horribly wrong in the SAP space program? These question will be answered whenever the next update is posted, well at least some of them.

Keweliusz Munar Program, setting foot of Polatish worker on surface of other world as five year plan outline

Craft: Keweliusz-1 Munar Lander and Atomic Engine Orbiter
Mission: Munar soft landing and return, flag planting

polant7-01.png

Much data gathered by Kilesia-1 and Dyrena rover, now know what condition on Mun are. Start design of lander to bring not one but three Cosmonaut to mysterious silver globe.

New cosmonauts trained during Kiskra rocketplane program are eager to test new untested design. Much engine and leg on craft, should be sufficient for weight of lander when on Mun.

*The Kiskra rocketplane program will be skiped as it didn’t really achieve much. Apart from getting some of the potatoes stranded on an island a few hundred kilometers to the north of the KSC. Built a giant 4-man jet to get them all back.

polant7-02.png

Attempt at land not go good, blame error of pilot. All cosmonaut alive however. We change steering mechanism so pilot sure to align craft for proper landing.

polant7-06.png

Put whole lander on rocket to test both new rocket and if lander can land from bigger altitude.

*The basic idea for the Mun mission is simple. A lander and an automated orbiter module are launched into orbit on top of a single rocket. The orbiter carries the bulk of the fuel and two NERVAs which do all the orbital manuevers. Once the entire craft is on an orbit over the target the lander undocks and begins descent. After it lands it returns to orbit, docks with the orbiter and they both fly back to Kerbin.

polant7-09.png

Parachute and all system work but leg prove to be weak. Also antena look ugly, redesign those part and make new lander after intern get all part together. Luckily while all leg and some engine explode all cosmonaut unharmed. Some say we do unmanned test first, but not time for unmanned test as comrade general want proletariat on Mun soon.

polant7-11.png

Improved Keweliusz craft launches, comrade Darth Roxorowski particular eager to risk life for science and socialism of Polant.

polant7-12.png

They get safe to orbital altitude, many say we should do gravity turn to save fuel. However Comrade general say gravity turn invention of capitalist pig. Therefore we no do gravity turn and waste fuel, plenty of potato gas and junk in Polant to make rocket out of anyway.

*Honestly, these bad insertion trajectories make me ashamed of them.

polant7-13.png

Munar Vehicle detach from rocket, atomic rocket engine fire to propel into pre-transfer park orbit.

polant7-18.png

Transfer burn go not as well as plan. Comrade Whiskey Wolfowicz blame burn execution on broken clock in capsule making timing wrong. Luckily engineer master “correction burn” it read about in Kerman physics textbook. New manuever to correct is planned.

polant7-19.png

Vessel now on correct trajector even if far from optimal. Then again Markzism-Keninism not care about optimal so everything is ideologically proper.

polant7-20.png

Mun very close now! Cosmonauts prepare craft for insertion into Munar orbit. Already they make history and become hero.

polant7-23.png

Cosmonaut gaze on alien surface 80 kilometer beneath them. However SAP concern with fuel amount in tank. Design not carry enough to make land possible, and that without even thinking of making return to orbit after land.

*Yeah, this would have totally run out of fuel before it would have touched down. Back to the drawing board.

polant7-25.png

The decision is made to scale back current mission to orbital study and return with no land attempt.

polant7-26.png

Cosmonaut execute return burn with true socialist efficiency!

*The key to a proper fuel-efficient return from Munar orbit is to burn prograde so that your Munar apoapsis is raised towards Kerbin. At the same time when you escpae the Mun’s SoI your prograde should be facing the Mun’s retrograde. The result will be your vessel ending up on a lower Kerbin orbit like on the screenshot.

polant7-27.png

Cosmonaut burn left fuel to put vessel into aerobraking trajector.

polant7-28.png

Nearly all fuel gone, only lander tank full. Orbiter section detached and lander now continue to Kerbin alone.

polant7-30.png

Executing final deorbit burn at 120 kilometer.

polant7-31.png

Capsule separate from propulsion stage at 48 kilometer. All now rest in big parachute made of many potato bag.

polant7-32.png

Parachute open and not break apart despite supersonic speed.

polant7-33.png

Full deploy of paraschute, capsule fall below 8 meter per second.

polant7-34.png

Splashdown success! Capsule float safe in sea, friendly Koviet Submarine pick up crew on way back from secret patrol.

However we still have deadline made by general. Need Cosmonaut on Mun fast.

Craft: Keweliusz-2 Heavy Munar Lander with dock-capable external fuel tank
Mission: Munar soft landing and return, flag planting

polant7-35.png

Design new lander, bigger, more powerful and more efficient. Second Cosmonaut crew of Draco Komisarski, Elwro Kermanczyk and Bonescraperwicz sure to land on Mun now.

polant7-36.png

New Keweliusz lander very different, it have much more fuel and now use two NERVA to land. Also use the atomic engine in orbit. Save on mass. Also orbiter module now reduced to fuel tank and beacon. Idea simple, leave fuel tank with surplus fuel in orbit, land then return to munar orbit, dock with tank to resupply and go back.

polant7-37.png

Draco Komisarski inspect outer hull for micrometeorite damage, turn out it just space bug that crash into hull. Cosmic insect make mess but not damage. All check out fine in park orbit so order to continue to Mun is made.

polant7-39.png

polant7-40.png

Burn go better this time. Still plenty of fuel in tank.

polant7-43.png

Keweliusz now 14 kilometer over surface and adjust orbit to land at uh... interesting two rock spotted by Dyrena Rover. Still have over half fuel left which bode well for mission success odds.

polant7-46.png

Separate from tank as prepare for descent. History make for future generation to envy now.

polant7-47.png

80 kilometer to target.

polant7-48.png

Darkness make for hard land but beacon of Dyrena allow us to see where it is.

polant7-49.png

Look like dyrena about kilometer from predicted land site of Keweliusz.

polant7-51.png

Yes, see Dyrena fine now. Just tell people from TV edit to cover up the arch. If we suppose to air mission “live” next week cannot show secret arch to imperialist when boast of achievement of socialism.

polant7-52.png

See surface below lander, just mere second away from history.

polant7-53.png

KURWA! Lander leg break, landing botch complete. Cosmonaut say terrain slope. We cannot broadcast this failure to world. Go tell press and TV that launch “aborted” and rescheduled for future.

polant7-54.png

At least they land near target. Need to solve problem.

polant7-55.png

Look like nuclear engine damage as well.

polant7-56.png

Draco Komisarki volunteer to inspect, become first Cosmonaut on Mun. However he not be one in history book as failure bring shame to workers of World.

Engine definite damage. Probably leak nuclear fuel. Comrade Draco dismiss leak as it only cause minor itch sensation.

polant7-57.png

Cosmonaut use RCS pack to fly to Dyrena rover. He fly through arch….

2001_screenshot_stargate_00.jpg

Deqn4.png

2001_screenshot_stargate_01.jpg

Sn2Ac.png

2001_screenshot_stargate_02.jpg

Report he see something amazing and that all of Jool’s satellites are our except Laythe. We think he smuggle vodka into Cosmonaut Suit and now talk nonsense.

polant7-58.png

However he find Dyrena rover, unscrew some component to fix radiation leak in damage engine.

polant7-59.png

He also fly somewhere, not sure where he go to.

polant7-60.png

Yes, he fly on top of arch. Say view nice from there. Also arch very big from up close.

polant7-61.png

Now he look at lander and fly back with part.

polant7-63.png

Attempt fix leak, SAP give order to try to get off Mun despite damage.

polant7-64.png

However imbalance thrust make steer impossible. Lander spin much so abort attempt before lander totally crash. Cosmonaut have still potato ration and water which last for few day. May have to resort to cannibalism. Some suggest they go hunt Mun Beast, however not sure if Mun Beast safe to eat. Cannibalism seen as better idea among SAP engineer and party.

polant7-64a.png

Oh no, Mun Beast gather around lander vessel! Not sure what they want with craft but fear they may damage vital system. Need to think of solution fast.

To be continued.

Will the Cosmonauts starve to death (even if starvation is not modeled in the game?) or will they receive rescue or aid before they die out of old age? Can Polant actually get them back from the Mun? Hell, can Polant actually land something on the Mun without blowing a part of it up by accident? What lies beyond Kerbin orbit in the deeper parts of the Kerbol System? These question will be answered whenever the next updates get posted.

Also bump this to the next page in advance as the I don’t want to murder yours and mine bandwidth with more screenshots on this page.

I’ll have to split the update after the next update into two as it ended up with over 120 screenshots after purging the ones which were redundant or pointless :M

Decided to get this game, thanks to this LP, and holy shit it's addicting. I wonder if there's only so much you can do, however, if you are unwilling to do maths. Oh well. Awesome lp btw
