Here's word from the worst.

@GhanBuriGhan - Dark Brotherhood is the best element of Oblivion but overall level of that game is pretty low..... Still the quests are fun but the DB plot is generic. Yeah and "people of Cyrodill" have like 5 voices (+ maybe next 5 for main NPCs - emperor, his son...). NEXT GEN: 1 guy does all argonians and khajiiti (?), and many females have got this horrible Texas (?) voice (voiced by the same person) and of course all voiceovers done by the same person sound exactly the same! (what's funny some of these people did voices for Hammer & Sickle :)
Ragdoll is implemented very well - after 87 hits troll suddenly loses weight and after 88th flies, well.... like a ragdoll. The same goes to NPCs - I punched (when i was low level) a sleeping guy and he nearly flew to another room - still it takes about 30 punches to kill a townsman when you're high level (paradox?). Oh yes and forget about KOing monsters - empirically proved that monsters are not affected by stamina loss (the same goes to everyone after you hit lvl 10-15). Also max damage for fists is 11 (which is extremely low) - no matter if they're bare or steel-clad. No dual-wield, you can use a shield only when you use a weapon, axes-blunt weapons, bows are done like in some Wolfenstein-clone (the first one), you can't improve speed of your fighting, you can't stealth kill (with one stab, punch, swing)... the list goes on and on...
And even If you try to think like an ADHD... that game has not a single thing better than in other games. Now every single element is fixed/going to be fixed by mods.
Bargain bin - perfect place for this title.
Oooh i fell relieved.

I'm really impressed by all you guys that mention how many hours you've put into Oblivion. Not only that but I get the breakdown of what quests/factions they've done. Thanks fellas, I'm tallying up all the figures and I'll let you know who's the biggest douchebag OK?

No seriously, I've had enough, it's getting my Irish up ova heah. "I'm 135 hours in with my lvl 16 Viking/Ninja, I've done all the Dark...and I haven't even finished the main quest yet!" I don't give a fuck.

How'd you like if I give you a detailed breakdown of my masturbation schedule too? "At 8:30 I rubbed one out to the Filene's bra ad in the Globe. Then for my mid-morning wank I painted my other hand black and pretended Beyonce was tossing me off..." It's the same thing - you're wankers. At least when I'm finished jerking off I have something to show for it.

By the way, I'm 0 hours into Oblivion. I haven't walked within 5 feet of the box, and I wouldn't piss on Oblivion if it was on fire.

They forgot to mention the Hidden Stash, containing a thousand septims, some gems and some enchanted items.

Not that it's hard to find a generic chest in every fucking fort and dungeon that contains a thousands septims, some gems and some enchanted items.

The either tell VD to quit making Oblivion posts, or don't look at them, smartass.

Why, are you roleplaying when you jerk off? Do you play an upright knight, or rather a warty gnome?

Which means you are not really entitled to an opinion about it.

Chokeberries are real.
Right, though chokeberries can be both eaten or used for decorative purposes, which makes me wonder why it is "notorious."

Notorious and venemous? I'm guessing they have a very poisonous berry in Cyrodil that they decided to name "chokeberry", because it chokes whoever eats it. I mean, real-life mixed straw and chokeberry jam is delicious, and I don't think the berry on it's own is dangerous, not in any form.

Heh, it would just fit so perfectly with my overall vision of Bethesda, if they decided to make chokeberries deadly because, y'know, they're called "choke" berries, so obviously they must have a deadly choking effect.

What I wonder is that if they are SO notorious and poisonous, then why would people eat them when they find them lying around? Are people of Tamriel like 3 years old children who put everything they find to their mouth? Well that would certainly explain some things but...

I wonder how many of you actually played the game? Because all this OB posts are just to fuel the insatiable need of whining about this game. Play it (don't buy it), "enjoy" it, forget it, stop making new threads about it (especially about shitty 2$ mods). I'm sure if more of you (you = those who didn't play OB) played it there would be an end to all OB posts in the Codex. If I'm wrong so why not make posts about GTA? It's the same fucking genre.

GTA? The same genre as TES? How?

I don't see how playing the game would make people stop talking about it all of a sudden, considering that Oblivion is a very important subject, regardless of its roleplaying or general qualities. So maybe the game itself doesn't offer much to talk about, but its unbelievable commercial success will heavily influence the genre. So yeah, Oblivion is an important subject and people shouldn't ignore it.

Well, it's a news post, not just a thread. Besides, I've just played "Titan Quest" and even though I never cared to comment on it before, I really feel the urge now to voice my frustration with this irritatingly bland and laughably generic game. So I guess playing Oblivion would have a similar effect on those who haven't played it yet. People would spot more and more flaws and more and more "whiny" threads would be created.

What I'm trying to say is your logic doesn't make any sense at all.

@Lumpy: not TES but Oblivion. I'm comparing the latest titles - OB and GTA:SA. The TES series it constantly degen... eee evolving. So is with GTA series. But when in each next TES game you can do less (less cities, less weapons, less voice actors :)) the GTA is adding more content (i'm not discussing the value of said content). And both of the are railroaded action-adventure games with simplified arcade combat (compare it to M&B). Yes Oblivion gives you a feeling that you have some choice (one-option dialogues:)) but it's only a feeling. The gameplay is the same (the difference: OB - FPP, GTA - TPP) - you just run from point to point using quest compass and killing baddies. Combat elements in GTA are done better, while in OB you have this "NPC-interaction" element. Yes I'm a dumbfuck.

@Uz0rnaem: maybe logic is on your side but the execution is shitty. There are many other titles which are significant to the game business and are not present on the Codex. OB deserves the right because it features stats and swords? So why not WoW or GW? It's always the same: another OB news - another whiny thread created by people who didn't play the damn game.
Nothing better than whining about whining.

EDIT: can't wait for Titan Quest

I wouldn't really call Oblivion railroaded. It's just that in Oblivion, they decided to have less joiable factions, and make them better.
In the end, however, they didn't make them any better. The Mages Guild questline was nice for awhile (the Necromancer's Moon quest was by far the best), but by the end, it became a string of senseless fed-ex crap.
I've just started the Dark Brotherhood questline, and the first quest (where you have to kill a pirate) was preety nice. It had a Thief feel to it: Hide in a crate, sneak past the pirates, kill the captain, and escape through the balcony until the shipmates, who heard the noise, break into the room.

My mistake i didn't specify it was only about OB. (comparing Daggerfall to GTA:SA could be considered as blasphemy). Less, better factions? Well why not more & better factions instead of spending money on graphics wich are not that good (IMHO HL2 or F.E.A.R. had many times better, especially textures - which in OB have been partially fixed by mods LOL). The DB questline is good because it lacks fed-ex quests. And shows some potential. All this crap is bathed in lollipop-fantasy.

TEH SPIOLER WARNIG!!!

Even the warrior guild quest where you kill whole village while being on some kind of drug.

END SPOILER

In GTA:SA you have many "factions" (NPCs who give you series of quests) - and it's done better than in OB. Quests/missions are better and multi-phase because of better game mechanics while in OB almost all are like "go to [place] and kill/find/retrieve/whatever [something]". Also the "NPCs" are memorable and well voiced (OB features SpeedNPC (tm) - all of them look resemble monkeys and talk using about 5 voices). I'm not gloryfying GTA but showing how crappy is OB (still being a good game if it wouldn't be so "hyped" and cost 3$ :))

EDIT: Not railroaded? Well I was pissed when i hit emperor and he said something about my fate. I didn't have a choice even if it would led me to see a message "a major NPC is dead thus completing main quest is impossible to thee". And now for something copletely different: the implementation of horse riding in OB is hopeless.

Name one that's even remotely as (potentially) influental as Oblivion. Just one.

OB deserves the right because it features stats and swords? So why not WoW or GW?
Games like WoW and GW don't have too much of an influence on projects outside of the MMORPG/MMOG genre, and MMORPGs simply aren't covered by this site in general.

EDIT: can't wait for Titan Quest
I'm very serious when I say that I'm afraid you will be extremely disappointed by the game. Before you buy it, you should at least give it a try. That crappy demo really is representational of the full game in absolutely every aspect, except for the size of the game world. And just so you know who's saying this: I liked Diablo and Diablo 2, I absolutely loved Sacred and its addon and I'm still having a lot of fun with Fate, so I'm definitely not against "twitch-based" action RPGs in general. Titan Quest simply sucks.

Potentially influential? Why not GTA:SA? Why not WoW? MMORPGs are not covered by this site in general? Then why crappy action-adventure games? Is WoW less RPG than OB? You can't see that the dumbing down of RPGs it leading to MMO? Why people who made Torment, Fallout, Arcanum and other good games are unemployed or making strange decisions regarding their upcoming games (a thought based on the interviews)? VD or Spiderweb Software won't save the genre :(

Titan Quest: i've played the demo and i've purchased the game (paying 1/16th of my monthly wage) but i'm still waiting for the release (August 3rd in Poland). I've told why i like this game in a TQ thread. It's like Madness Interactive (http://www.2flashgames.com/f/f-281.htm): dumb, repetitive and... fun :)
That game simply doesn't belong to this forum...

EDIT: @Uz0rnaem (eeh i supressed the urge to type it normally) - all "actionRPG" games (well Diablo1 stands out because of the state-of-the-art music) are about clicking, watching the enemy die and collecting phat loot. Nothing more, nothing less. The plot is like typical porn movie plot - only a pretext to show some "action". I play them because i can: listen to music and think of something else simultaneously. I don't have ADHD syndrome but it helps me concentrate or relax a bit when i'm home from work. Better than "watchin' the game, havin' a bud". :)

As far as I know, GTA:SA was neither promoted, nor percieved by the public as a purebred RPG. Oblivion is a completely different matter.

Is WoW less RPG than OB?
I wouldn't be able to tell, since the only MMORPG I've ever tried was Ultima Online. However, I think the Codex' decision to "ignore" MMORPG related news isn't based on their roleplaying value. It's simply a different genre, a genre the Codex staff just seems to hate/not give a shit about.

You can't see that the dumbing down of RPGs it leading to MMO?
In my uninformed opinion, crappy single player RPGs and crappy MMORPGs are crappy independently from each other. But to be honest, I've never really thought a lot about online gaming in general, since I'm almost exclusively into single player games.

VD or Spiderweb Software won't save the genre
Just ignoring everything we consider shit won't save the genre either though.

It's like Madness Interactive: dumb, repetitive and... fun
The "dumb fun" factor is what I like about Fate, but Titan Quest is more of a "dumb annoyance". Really, it's like the designers wanted to create a fun mix of Sacred and Diablo 2, but ended up ripping off only the flaws of those two games. It's just a collection of shortcommings, dated design and awfully boring art direction. Well, you already ordered the thing, so I can only hope you love the color brown, since it's the game's visual main theme.
