Silly Codex, I would rather see females raping each other in the showers instead of males. :codexisfor:

Not more RPG Maker trite

It states in the FAQ that one of the team members is coding the engine, so that rules out the RPG Maker bit. Besides, wouldn't a game done in RPG Maker have a more anime-ish style to it?

You can put any art style you want into RPG Maker.
I'm curious why they would have a team member coding a new engine when this could have been easily made with RPG Maker.

Programmer for Prisonscape here.

The reasons why I chose to wrote a custom engine:

- Get to learn engine stuff on a deep level
- I can implement everything Pekka (the designer) wants to have in the game without having to fight or work around code I can't control
- If bugs or other issues arise in the engine I can fix them immediately without having to wait for a third party
- RPG Maker isn't multiplatform (I think)

The downside is of course that the game will take longer to create, but we're planning to use and improve the same engine in our future games. Having said all of that, Unity with the recently improved 2D tools looks tasty. I think I'm too much of a control freak to start using it though. :D

If you guys have some more questions about the game, post them here or at our website (www.prisonscape.com) or Twitter (@prisonscape). I'll try to get Pekka here to answer some design/gameplay questions...

Pretty nifty

Though I hope you'll reconsider the JRPG aesthetics, at least in the UI.

We found this post about a week ago, and to be honest I was too lazy to write any comment on the game, until now. I also got hooked on this damn forum in general, especially to this and the JRPG
sub-forums. I have a long history with pen & paper RPG's, I've played D&D, AD&D, D&D3, CP2020, RuneQuest, Twilight 2000 and a few more but it's been a few years now. We actually bought Pathfinder but
haven't had time to test it out, yet. Older cRPG games such as Ultima Underworld 1 & 2, Lands of Lore, EOB 1-3 also have a place in my heart. There are so many cRPG's in the fantasy setting in the making,
that we decided to try to do something else with Prisonscape.

If you're interested in our game, you should check out our short FAQ:

http://www.indiedb.com/games/prisonscape/news/frequently-asked-questions5

The basic mechanics of the game are explained in these blog posts:

http://www.indiedb.com/games/prison...me-works-closer-look-at-game-mechanics-part-1

Little something about the fighting mechanics:

http://www.indiedb.com/games/prisonscape/news/ready-fight-fighting-mechanics-in-prisonscape-part-1
http://www.indiedb.com/games/prison...ond-part-of-fighting-mechanics-in-prisonscape

And the job system:

http://www.indiedb.com/games/prisonscape/news/getting-the-job-done

There are a lot of other posts too which give more details about the game, but I think some of these features (along with the set & setting) makes us different from other games in development. We also get
a lot of critique about the graphics style of the game - we're currently doing a complete overhaul on the UI and the tiles and character animations aren't as polished as we want them to be, since this game
is still very much work in progress. I think that this forum is probably one of the best sources for creative feedback, so if you have any ideas/comments please let us know!

Haba: Do you mean the character portrait? Or the UI style in general?

How in-depth will the C&C be? Will stats ever have an effect on dialogue choices?

Also, are you keeping the dialogue boxes RPG Maker white on blue, or are you going to change those?

Looking forward to playing this, please stick around the forums and ignore any rumors of a "General Discussion board"

We're planning on making the game so that your choices matter. There will be main story line and only one ending, but you can affect what happens to other inmates. There are several side story lines which affect this, and things can be achieved in different ways in the main story line. Statistics will affect your dialogue choices, as does the reputation with different factions and your skills. Otherwise we shouldn't even call the game RPG. This of course needs a lot of testing, and I was hoping we could sign a few alpha/beta testers from this board since there are people who are obviously experts in cRPG's. ;)

We're already refurnishing the UI. Those Final Fantasy boxes were just a placeholder. This is how the game looks now UI-wise:

I will definitely stick around and answer all of your questions about the game, and Tuomas can comment more on the technical side of things.

The big low-res font in the skills box in the character screen hurts to read.

Other than that and a few other esthetic nitpicks, I think it looks great. Nice idea, too.

Looks good, but how will those movements affect combat? what will be the difference between using punches or kicks, will there be some sort of combo system or every option will be more or less the same with varying hit chances and damage?

The game I always wanted to play. I don't suppose you get to choose your character's background and crime(s) committed for some reputation and skill bonuses/maluses? Obviously some badass biker who's in for beating up some cops would get a lot more respect than some middle-aged child molester with no street skills - could function as a difficulty level, of sorts.

Ja cameo-rooliin sitten NPC:ksi vaikka Volvo-Markkanen.

BTW the translation would be "La familia nuestra" or "Nuestra familia", or something else depending on what you wanted to say, but "La nuestra familia" does not make any sense. get a native spanish speaker to help you, cause to this day i havent met anyone from USA that can translate for shit.

The big low-res font in the skills box in the character screen hurts to read.

Other than that and a few other esthetic nitpicks, I think it looks great. Nice idea, too.

That character screen above is an old version. Here's the latest:

character_menu_17.png

Also fixed Nuestra Familia in that one.

Looks good, but how will those movements affect combat? what will be the difference between using punches or kicks, will there be some sort of combo system or every option will be more or less the same with varying hit chances and damage?

The combat skill system borrows from CT/FF games in a way that once you get better at fighting, you'll get new attacks. Some enemies are more vulnerable to specific attacks and each attack type has a duration that is attacked to the timer. For example, kicks take longer time to execute than punches, and you have to wait a longer time until you can attack again.

We also have combo attacks, this is from earlier blog post: "Once you get better at fighting, you will get combo attacks. These multi attacks will give you an opportunity to damage your opponent severely by doing for example many punching attacks in a row (punch-punch-punch-uppercut). To make a succesful combo attack, the player must pass simple QTE combo meters a'la Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. We know that the general commentary on QTE's is negative, but in Prisoscape it's mostly just good timing and we will not make them tedious or too difficult. Also, the difficulty of combo attacks goes down once you'll fighting skills go up."

We also have some intelligence-based attacks such as taunting the enemy or observing their combat behavior. You can read more about those in this post:

http://www.indiedb.com/games/prisonscape/news/ready-fight-fighting-mechanics-in-prisonscape-part-1

The player character's background and crime is fixed to the story, but you can choose some skills or disadvantages (drug addiction, for example) in the beginning for some challenge. In that sense the game's lacking in RPG elements, but hopefully the story will be good enough to fix the lack of background/crime modification.

Pistetään korvan taakse!

BTW the translation would be "La familia nuestra" or "Nuestra familia", or something else depending on what you wanted to say, but "La nuestra familia" does not make any sense. get a native spanish speaker to help you, cause to this day i havent met anyone from USA that can translate for shit.

We have a guy from Argentina helping with the translations.

Ah there, in the latest screenshot you fixed it, cool.

And yes, in the last screenshoot the whole thing looks much much better. I would downsize the letters in the info panel so that the whole description fits, or get rid of it and show a window with the description if you click on the skill.
Will you be able to pick/make you own portrait?

As for the combat system
Have you looked into the combat system from legend of legaia? making combos in that game was really fun.
And im betting the observe skill would be handy to determine strenghts and weaknesses of your opponent, will it be tied to a skill?

Finally will there be a romance with the nurse? not too much into romances but in a prison game not being able to nail the only woman in the place seems kinda wrong.

Im really interested in this game now.

BTW the translation would be "La familia nuestra" or "Nuestra familia", or something else depending on what you wanted to say, but "La nuestra familia" does not make any sense. get a native spanish speaker to help you, cause to this day i havent met anyone from USA that can translate for shit.

"La familia nuestra", está muy mal expresado, a menos que esa era la idea. Y "Nuestra familia" no suena muy gangster que digamos. Yo le pondría otra cosa como "Hermanos latinos", "hermandad latina", "Los latinos", "La pandilla", etc

Will there be a rape minigame? Racist quests to join the Aryan Brotherhood? The game sounds like a linear story-focused romp; other than that, cool.

No rape minigames, sorry. As the player character is white, he can join the AB through series of jobs (quests). Initially we thought of making three different characters (white, black and latino) with different stories in the game, but it would've been too much work because the game expanded a lot from the original idea. We might release the other two stories as a free DLC, though.

True, "nuestra familia" is awful, but lets keep it in english... english speakers hate it when they cant understand what other people are saying in a thread of an english speaking forum.

I would go with something stronger, like "Sudacas", "Pacos", or something wildly different, depending on the background of that faction and its origins.

Now that I did a little research, those names are based on real prison gangs.

what if you can choose your race, your height, your weight, your avatar, your past, etc at the start of the game?. By choosing your race, you limit your posibility to enter in some gangs(blacks can't enter to the A.B. for example) , and your physical condition determines how you should fight(if it was your choice to do so, of course) and may also include some bonus. I was thinking in something like this:
short guy-->bonus on dodge
fat--> bonus on heath
skinny--> bonus on your speed/agility
tall--> " on strength
and so on...

Is this possible?

White - standard.
Nigger - intelligence limited to 5, bonus to strength.
Asian - strength limited to 5, bonus to intelligence.

You were talking about this, right?
