Yeah, pretty ridiculous since this is what they get the interns to do in their spare time.

"Want to stay at Microsoft as an un-paid intern? Well, here's this 10+ year old game we have sitting around. I hear there are a bunch of nerds who are now making money who would gladly pay for it again. Just make it look semi-decent and throw in some extra buttons or whatever".
The game itself had a huge overhaul in its engine. It was more than the cosmetic fix that you complain about. It promised everything it delivered from the shitty unit pathfinding to remain in the game since people get nostalgic over it. They changed a lot of code to make the game run on newer systems and to run on a new client to the workshop. For what the game is I give it a break.
