And herein lies the answer to the oft-asked question - "If u gys h8 Oblv so much just dont buy it k? y u care about it?"

I mean, even Bethesda acknowledged the poor quality of their own writing when lauding the work of their high profile voice actors, so how the fuck are their peers so enchanted?

And game design? Jesus. On the highest level, it's a fantastic concept, but it doesn't require much digging to see the many flaws in the actual specifics of the design. I don't think I could remember a single design element that was elegantly handled, or even above average. It ran the gamut from complete and utter failure (Level scaling, persuasion, lockpicking, economics, horses etc) to merely adequate (combat system, xbox interface, etc.)

Fuck the games industry.

As sad as that statement is for the industry as a whole, but I would be hard pressed to name a mainstream game that actually clearly beats Oblivion last year in the writing department. None that I played, at least. From what I hear, only Gothic 3, really, and I aint playing that until several more patches.

Don't get me wrong, I was deeply dissapointed by Oblivions writing, mostly because of the general linearity, and its disconnect from lore. But still, there was for a game these days an extraordinary amount of it, and some reasonably amusing quest ideas. The games that impressed me with writing last year, were all old games I had not previously played (Betrayal at Krondor) or indie games (teudogar).

Can't agree more with that. Rpgs are pretty much stuck inside a mamuts ass and it doesn't show any signs of improving.

Oblivion's writing is howlingly bad. NWN2 might not be perfect, but its writing is far better than anything provided by Oblivion; the only decent writing in all of Obl is (some of) the lore, 99.9% of which is actually from Morrowind and 80% of which is from Daggerfall before that. What a sad joke.

Bully isn't bad, but Sam & Max and Dreamfall are the only two "writing" nominees that really deserve to be there.

Gothic 3. Even more great about G3 is that it was originally written in German, and the translations to NA English is freakin' fantastic. The dialogue is humorous, very sarcastic at times, even the words "asshole" and "bullshit" appear - so it isn't 12-year-old-ADHD driven dialogue.

No. Gothic 3's writing was not good. It was passable for what it was trying to accomplish, and that's all.

FF12, and NWN2 should be the frontrunners here with FF12 winning it.

Only morons think otherwise.

Meh. What do you you expect in the days of liberal softism?

You're right. It's the result of consensus politics in schools. "If everybody else is for/believes/likes something then there must be some truth/value to it".

Everybody says CO2 will destroy the planet. If you don't believe that you are an idiot/paid by corporations. Everybody says abortion is a woman's choice. If you disagree you are an asshole. Everybody says that TES4 was the best game this year and FPS combat, flower picking, seduce/taunt/intimidate -style dialog is the future of CRPG. If you think otherwise you are a senile, reactionary loser.

Menticide
The concept of "menticide" indicates an organized system of judicial perversion and psychological intervention, in which a powerful tyrant transfers his own thoughts and words into the minds and mouths of the victims he plans to destroy or to use for his own propaganda. Modern psychiatry may deliver him several tools for this perversion. Our psychiatric standpoint toward this challenge has to be formulated. Examples of menticide are described and ways of protection indicated.

What the fuck kind of math is that?

Oblivion's writing was dull, lame, somewhat amateurish.
NWN2's writing was actually very good, they should have gotten the nomination instead.

Take away all the pre-game hype and post-game worship for Oblivion and it's actually not a terrible game. Just a painfully mediocre one. I'm sure the kids love it on the X-box.

Reminds me of this hilarious bit on the micro-fascism of evidence-based medicine.

OK this is the second time you post this bullshit. Can you explain why you do it? What has 'evidence based medicine' got to do with anything I said?

Which I had already mentioned as a likely candidate. Anyway, I probably should have said "5 games", meaning in order to kick the big O off the list.

badscience is actually a science-blog, not a political blog, and they were mocking something in an academic journal.

To answer your question, dagorkan, both your concept of menticide and the "microfascism" of the post-modern critics of evidence-based medicine involve elites declaring something to be the truth and people who dislike those elites and/or their ideas associating them with political tyranny.

This was actually the first time I linked to it here, but I did it again just for the Young Ones clip in another thread to mock your use of the term "fascist".

This is the most funny and embarassing thing for anyone who played the first The Longest Journey, the real deal, before this piece of trash took the name and tried to be a sequel to what was one of the greatest adventure game. I will never understand how the fuck the same guy produced those two games/stories. The same guy. A masterpiece, and a piece of trash.

Probably a rock did hit hard his damn head. No other ways.
