Makes me cringe a little bit, but truth be told, I'd have called it an action RPG back when it was released. Compared to most modern-day action RPGs, IWD's a narrative simulator.

You would have been wrong even back then. Action RPG is not some fluid category, with dynamic range, ehich keeps changing as games become more popamole. Action RPG is an RPG, where some of the gameplay is action-focused, as in requiring manual dexterity to operate (well). Nothing more, nothing less.

A lot of people back in the day referred to combat crawls as action-rpgs regardless of what combat system it had.

It's entirely possible to use preset characters and whacky-whacky your way through most of the IE games. I know a ton of people who played them for story and shit and never gave one small thought to tactics.

I think that cover is okaish. The main problem is that fugly fagbox logo. That shit clashes with every single color in the artwork. At leas Sony was sensible enough to make theirs black which is more likely to go with different color palettes.
