Stop filling the Steam list with shit and we won't have to go through it again.

It's funny that nobody has realized that the exact same complaints hold true for System Shock 2 (props to anybody consistent enough to demand that SS2 be removed from the list as well - not that we'll do it)

the Codex wasn’t formed to celebrate or promote the redeeming factors of Diablo and Dark Souls. It is not our creed or our mission, and whilst we may enjoy those games we don’t place it in our list of official games RPGCodex recommends
So sayeth the sole founder and hivemind ruler of the Codex?

It's funny that nobody has realized that the exact same complaints hold true for System Shock 2 (props to anybody consistent enough to demand that SS2 be removed from the list as well - not that we'll do it)

As long as you provide consistency one way or the other. Which means I expect to see Borderlands on your list any moment now.

So sayeth the sole founder and hivemind ruler of the Codex?

That's what the Codex was formed for. Unless it's changed in the decade I've been visiting the site.

It's possible to finish SS2 without good reflexes if you build your character right - I did and I'm dyspraxic. That's not true for DS from what I've heard.
(I don't object to its presence on Codex list though. Just making a point for the sake of making a point)

That's what the Codex was formed for. Unless it's changed in the decade I've been visiting the site.
Yes, I fully remember the founding fathers signing a letter about what's an RPG and what's not, deciding what kind of game should be recommended and what not.

I mean, let's check the first articles posted here. Oh, what's this, Divine Divinity and Grandia II? Filthy Action-RPGs and JRPG in muh 2002 Codex? Also, a debate on whatever Freelancer is or isn't an RPG?

All in all, there is little doubt in my mind that Freelancer is, indeed an RPG.
Oh, the glory and purity of the 2002's! :salute:

Like I said, if you want to put good action-RPGs on Steam then be consistent. Chuck them all in there. That includes Borderlands. If you don't you're just promoting games the people in the little mod circle like.

So add Borderlands to the list, or shut the fuck up Felipe.

Proven to be full of shit, you're moving goalposts, eh?

Dark Souls is in because it was voted #14 best RPG on our list. System Shock 2 was #22. Borderlands ranked at #164. That's the result of 234 people voting, not a little mod circle. As opposed to one butthurt guy fabricating "the mission of the Codex".

I'd like to say that the reason Dark Souls was added was because it's a hardcore fucking dungeon crawler with best-of-class action-RPG mechanics, but its enduring popularity on the Codex (hundreds of pages-long threads, and not full of shitposting like Bioware threads) certainly helped cement that reputation.

I'm fine with Dark Souls being recommended by the curator page. It was in the Codex recommends list and is ultimately a good game.

But not a good RPG, which is why it shouldn't be on the list. But the Codex has changed and this is a part of its new direction etc etc.

If DS2 gets on there the descent into absurdity will be complete.

it already is on there

It's possible to finish SS2 without good reflexes if you build your character right - I did and I'm dyspraxic. That's not true for DS from what I've heard.

Greatshield builds that stack lots of poise in Dark Souls 1 can obviate most any challenge the game holds while requiring little in the way of reflex-based prowess. Spell-casting builds can avoid a lot of the tense positioning and timing game that melee characters have to engage with. While reflexes are important, character building and proper item/inventory (ab)use can carry a weak player.

As others have said, if games like System Shock 2, Vampire: Bloodlines, Morrowind, Gothic, Alpha Protocol, Deus Ex are all on the list, then there's few valid reasons to exclude Dark Souls. Every single one of those games follows the same styyle of design what with character build determining the available abilities and the player's reflexive and tactical skills determining the effectiveness of their use.

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
Part of the reason I joined the RPG Codex is to find decent RPG. Where the heck are the sort of games I used to play.

Sorry for quoting from another thread but this ! People join Codex to find decent RPGs and we recommend fucking Dark Souls !! Is this where we have come to ?
You don't add games that are what the Codex used to stand for because they are in early access (and rightfully so) and you add that clusterfuck of anime and rolling around the bad guy until he commits seppuku.
This nigga thinks there's anime in Dark Souls!
Stone him!

Guyze plz remove Wizardry 8 from that list if it's on it, too similar to that weeaboo Wizardry 1-5 shit

Like I said before in the Top70 thread, I think Dark Souls is as much of an RPG as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which in my opinion is not very much. Still, it's close enough, and a truly excellent game, so there's no shame in having it on the list. Same as there was no shame in having Codex review the likes of Pathologic or Mark of the Ninja, which generated some butthurt from the "but but but it's not an rpg!" crowd as well.

That said, you could remove it and I wouldn't care. As we observed earlier, the only thing it does is promote the Codex curator as both DS games are very popular, and now we show up on their store pages. Whether that's a good or bad thing is unclear to me at the moment.

Ditto. Whether or not promoting the Codex curator list is desirable is really the only question here.

I feel like some people believe that the recommended games list should be a kind of ideological statement, a manifesto of the most desirable qualities in an RPG. The problem with that is that there is no such thing, there's (obviously) not even consensus on what an RPG is, much less a good one. Closest thing is the Top70, and you do have Dark Souls there, for better or worse. However, even if we did have the consensus, putting a manifesto like that on Steam serves little purpose. If you're a Codex regular, you are very likely to already have at least heard of all the games we're recommending - I certainly have.

The ultimate purpose of the curator is to actively encourage incline by giving a bit more visibility to good games that need it. In that sense, it's a good idea to put the likes of Neo Scavenger there, even though it appears on no top lists and no vote was held regarding its inclusion. And when I say "good games", I mean ones that agree with the most basic Codexian values - values which transcend the RPG genre - games which are well designed, complex, revel in being games rather than interactive movies, engage the player and demand attention rather than ferrying them across a linear corridor while they press A for Awesome, have real depth and reward thinking on one's own rather than following a quest compass. I find that whether I go into the Strategy section, the Adventure forum, or GRPGD, this is what people like and focus on.

And if that's the criteria, Dark Souls fits very well, and it's probably not a bad idea to have people who like Dark Souls check out our list. Should be fine so long as we don't start recommending Boredomlands just because it's popular.

I agree with most of this, but many users are of the opinion that "The Codex shouldn't compromise."

I am of the belief that a popular Curator promoting games that actually have merit versus all the other curators which pretty much just slam popular games on there has a lot of merit, and I think it is a worthy pursuit. And we're actually one of the more popular curators atm.

We might as well put CoD and AC on the list ... I am pretty sure the things that qualify as being a RPG end up open to debate, heck like Mass Effect.

I still dont get why the Amazon Princess is not on the list, its a RPG with at least a mutually exclusive path, you even get a option of what gender and what class you play as ... it have more of a RPG that dark Souls.
