100 results is fucking terrible. Taluntain, you say that people don't complain about it so it's OK. Well, here's people complaining because this shit is not OK.

My responses were a little more elaborate than that. As for people complaining, this is the Codex. If the search was really that bad, there'd be dozens if not hundreds of people complaining in this thread, not only a handful. Of course actually reading everything I wrote on the subject of search makes it easier to understand the rationale behind it and what its current limitations are. Simply raising the number of search results will not magically fix all the other issues with search that we've identified, but like I said, if DU wants to show more to everyone (which is currently the only option), it's easy enough to do.

Taluntain believes the Codex success is based on his ability to administrate the backend of a forum, for which he is very much incorrect.

Are you fishing for extra credit for randomly making shit up or something?

Clearly, the solution is to post less. That way there are less posts to search.

Instead of making more results visible. Would it not be possible to make it so you could limit you search results to not show posts after a certain date.... so you still only see 100 posts for size reasons or whatever, but only see 100 posts before, say April, instead of most recent 100. Or is that complicated/obviously been thought of and in general shows my lack of understanding?

I read your justifications. I just don't agree with them. Being able to dig through the forum in search of Old Codex Lore™ is an integral part of the Codex experience.

Pretty much anything's possible if we're talking about custom code. It's just not part of stock XF or ES at this point. Search is among the more complicated functions to mess with however, so there aren't that many developers who are qualified enough to do anything much with it.

If the search was really that bad, there'd be dozens if not hundreds of people complaining in this thread, not only a handful.
How many is many, though?

I too find the changes to the search function (and most of the changes to the forum that came to pass in the last year, actually, including the disappearance of the 'quote' and 'code' buttons) undesireable, but never complained because I didn't believe it would affect anything (and that is what I am reading - it is 'fine for a majority of users').

But hey, if it is subject to change, here is my complaint.

It's always hilarious how devs and admins of various types always go for the 'it's just a hardcore minority complaining, the majority of users are happy' trope. Which is particularly ironic on the Codex, because y'know.

Dropping the standard IPB search engine and going with Sphinx was a nice improvement (ignoring that it refuses to search archived threads simultaneously with live threads).

Doesn't look like a plugin exits for XenForo though.

I think if we used IPB here we could have an entire forum just for complaint threads. Anyway, I enabled 3-character searching and removed relevance altogether. This is now your basic, prehistoric search equivalent from the phpBB times and if everyone prefers this, we can keep it.

Relevance is a great feature, but it should definitely not be the default option. As far as I can tell it's still an option for advanced search, which sounds about right.

Yes, it's still available under advanced search, but all default search results are now sorted by most recent instead.

Codex 2012 Codex 2013 MCA Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Divinity: Original Sin 2 My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
I ran my Codex Search Quality Test™: "Snarls of defiance are heard from 10 Post-op Transsexuals, 4 Dickgirls and 1 Greater Faggot." and the results of the search correctly lead me to the origin of this hallowed piece of Codexian knowledge. Taluntain, I approve of your work.
