I don't understand why the VtMB new remake team didn't do this.

because they couldn't use source engine assets on the fly. they used whole levels and models, which were decoded into a readable format for hammer, exported as obj, re-exported as fbx and then brought into unity, where assets need to be checked in to the projects database. they also had to change the file format of all of the textures used, and animations. i guess there was nothing that could be re-used without change.

I was under the impression that the VtMB guys got C&D-ed because they were accepting donations, therefore were directly profiting from their mod.
