Sorry, missed the emoticon as I'm a bit rushed ATM, need to clear some things up AND did want to post that I had bought it, and whatever other details that I felt pertinent...

Nothing wrong with a genuine bargain being mentioned for a game folks here are interested in. Not the same as the Russian porn flood.

Have they confirmed whether or not STALKER has ripped off other games yet? They may still have used the assets legally. It'd be bizarre to see it being pulled now.

Be careful what class style you play as in Arx. The combat isn't entirely balanced in some ways.

It was a 660M download, and took me about half an hour or so to get. If you're a graphics whore, they ARE dated probably somewhere between Gothic 1 & 2.

You are bluffing. I just played both the Arx Fatalis and Gothic II demos, and Arx features far more detailed textures. Gothic II is very blocky.

And you, are, obviously, blind as a bat or a frog... As I've just played G1-3 prior to acquiring Arx. Face it, teh graphics are crap, but the game is ok.

On wiki it says that Arx Fatalis was originally intended to be Ultima Underworld 3, but the license couldn't be secured... I haven't played Arx - is it worth checking out? Is it anything like the UW games?

Well from what I keep reading and watching of it Arx looks really good, the one thing I haven't seen in action yet is the dialogue system - with voiced dialogue I'm hoping it still retains the options inherent to the UWs and Fallout... Regardless I'll check it out later today and post back my impressions...

EDIT: for clarity UW1 is my all-time favorite game (got me into the Ultima series), so anything similar would really be a blessing.

As a game by itself its really pretty good, although I found the story and some of the characters rather contrived and forgettable. However, as an Ultima Underwolrd "spiritual successor" I found it dissapointing.
The Crypt was IMHO one of the damn best dungeons in any RPG evar, though.

It's not as great as Morrowind, and the two were released at the same time. You guys say there's a shit ton of content in Arx Fatalis but I disagree, I thought it was rather limiting
arx was really nice... multiple endings depending on what you did or didn't do or did or didn't find out, non-apparent optional quests, lots of detail in the world.
not as non-linear or open-ended as morrowind, but thanks to the smaller and more detailed world it seemed way less generic and, hmm, more real (immershun!1).
+it was teh funneez, which morrowind simply lacked (great way to ruin a world by making everyone seem a humorless cloned bastard).

sometimes less is more, as was the case with arx vs morrowind, imo.

My feelings on Arx, copied+pasted from RPG Watch:

Arx is the best RPG I've played in recent years, and a definite contender for my all time favorite. My only discrepancy was with the non-existent storyline, which was out done by the incredible atmosphere. The voice work for the goblins had me laughing every time I approached one of those buggers. The Lord Inut chicken quest and the Earth Clan vs. Water Clan were my favorites. I can only hope that once Arcane is done with The Crossing, they make a proper sequel to Arx using the Source engine.

Another post I made on Gamespot:

I just beat Arx Fatalis for the first time, and I quickly started over with a new character. The atmosphere is so incredibly potent and rich, that the game allows for intense immersion. While rather light on the roleplaying elements, the complex and intriguing puzzles dispersed throughout the game really make up for the linearity of the setting. Arx has a claustrophobic feel, and the various levels really do seem to be deep underground, complete with howling winds, crumbling terrain, and dense fog. My favorite area was the Crypt, which was incredibly creepy for such an old game. Arx excels visually as well, featuring more detail than both Morrowind and Gothic II combined. I highly recommend this game to anyone who happens to pass up this board, as you will be treated to one of the most underrated games I have ever had the privledge to experience.

As you can tell, I love this game, and try to draw newcomers to it as much as possible. For $10 on Steam, you can't go wrong!

After playing it all day I have mixed feelings on this one...

My main contention is with the cutscene dialogue and the seemingly forced linearity. Unlike UW which allows you to go anywhere in the world at any time and solve quests in any order you choose, there isn't much to be gained from avoiding the main storyline in Arx. In this respect it reminds me more of an Ocarina of time/final fantasy than a UW, because you have almost no other course of action than advancing the main storyline - I basically feel like I'm running between checkpoints.

On the other hand, some of the puzzles are ridiculously hard and you need to be really observant to get through them. The areas are also well thought out (the goblin king who eats pie all day was great), and the magic system is one of the best implementations I've seen in a game.

I recommend it as a game to be experienced on it's own, but I wouldn't go in expecting it to be similar to the UW series with regards to role-playing opportunities.
