Not that you care, but you actually impressed me with that first post. For someone who calls himself King Dumbfuck you are quite more articulate and smart than most around here.

There are some problems, though. To "make this place very hostile and unwelcoming" is one of the main things that resulted on the very same issues you are mentioning. Many see the Codex as a closed, very elitist comunity: To be accepted in such is the kind of acceptance those "retards who have no business being here" crave for. And it comes in full, with the local equivalent of group hugs and all.

Flaming the retards to hell is not going to help. Right now, most people seem to think skills to flame and take flames as a man are part of the Codex. Yes, most people talking about their first Codex flame and the like are just joking - But how far does the joke have to get before becoming something more? And how real is the joke after a while? More than a few people come here for the "attitude" and group hugs instead of the topic. And coming to the Codex to Flame and get Flamed is seen almost as a rite of passage among sub-groups of other communities.

Ergo, Flaming the retards to hell does not change or solve the problem. If anything, it gives a greater incentive to get "inside" the group, as is now tighter and even more elitist. The right to Flame is a great impulse for the same groupthink you are bashing: The "alien enemy" gambit is the very same thing that today pulls most people to extreme ideologies or groups - Not the beliefs, not the topic. It also kills most original ideas: An idol becomes THE idol, as those inside do not want to become the alien to be Flamed and ridiculed. An idea becomes THE idea, the gospel, for the very same reason.

The "attitude" in the Codex is interesting. But, at least as i see it, is also the problem. Some say the lacks of threads are the problem, but it is a sympton or whatever it is called in english. I say the problem is that people join the Codex for the "attitude," the (quite stupid) ilusion of being in a closed group, and the place's reputation as a free-for-all unadjusted's hive. Add to that, and the situation grows.

"Normalize" the Codex - No flaming, no piracy, no stupid pornography threads, no "we are the RPG taliban" crap, a freedom of speech limited to the topic at hand. Scrap the group hugs. Abandon the stupid 'net celebrity spotlight. Turn away from the online comunity realm where it is now, and back to the closed-topic discussion forum. Turn it into a quiet place to discuss a certain genre of games instead of a worldview or an "attitude." Make it boring for anyone not inclined to discuss what a cRPG should be, and let the idiots exile themselves. They will.

First, VD, Calis, Shagnak: I worked far too hard for far too long to get this tag to ever want to part with it. Instead of removing it, why not have a head-shed meeting where you discuss adding King to it as a boon for my many years of entertaining everyone (as a parting gift)?

Second, let me fully express what I meant by retards. If this site keeps going with the current trend of retard overload how long will it take before everyone normal leaves? There are a lot of quality posters here, people that can and do add to the site, but what incentive do they have of sticking around in the long term if they are just going to get attacked by a bunch of juvenile retards every two seconds and that will just get worse? The only difference I see between the average poster here and the average poster on the Bethesda or Bioware boards is the members here are allowed to swear. Whats the answer? I don’t know. Something drastic needs to be done soon. Very soon.

Anyhow, with my leaving that’s one less idiot to worry about or keep tabs on. I think it is going to have to come down to you guys wrecking shop to clean house, and having to moderate with a heavy hand and hostility for a while. I only knew the Codex like that, since the legendary "discreditation" of Rauch's review of Gothic 3 by VD. And that's a good thing, you need tax free places and duty free shops on the internet as well.
This doesn't imply support to wannabe Nazis, racists or other similar faggots, but just that you post here on your responsibility, knowing what to expect in the posts other posters write, and accepting that.
Besides, there's the age filter, cheat on your own responsibility of facing the (more or less) "cruel" world of a (more or less) adult audience. I for one like not having to watch what I say and how rude it may seem, and am prepared to the same service in return.

From a lurker's perspective - it's a shame to see the Codex lose it's free speech policy - but I do agree that this place is becomming quite lame in some aspects.

Anyway - not going to make an essay out of this. Here's what I'd do to fix (what I perceive to be) the Codex's problems:
1. Close down the general forum for a while - this seems to be where the stupidity festers and grows, and it adds nothing to the goal of the site.
2. Open up new and more specific RPG forums. Something to get intelligent discussion on the theory behind making good cRPGs going instead of having that stuff crowded out by the dull threads repeating over and over again that 'Fallout is teh rox!', 'death to Bethesda!', etc. in the general RPG forum.
3. Ban people who derail intelligent threads with bullshit.

What I imagine these would do is to get rid of the idiots (Nazis included) by giving them a limited area to post worthless things, while attracting posters interested in talking intelligently about cRPGs, what makes them good, and how to make them better in the future.

I've always viewed the Codex as having some parallels with The Forge (www.indie-rpgs.com) when their theory forum was still active. The problem is that RPG Codex doesn't have any forums which direct and encourage discussion on how to make cRPGs, and so while there are threads like that, they generally don't get the attention that they need. It would be nice (and would make it far more interesting to read) to see this place have more discussion on the mechanics of cRPGs, how to build them, etc. - and would be even better to see these ideas built into indie projects by members of this forum.

For me the 'codex is a gold mine. My time is valuable, as I am sure are most other peoples'. The number of hidden gems, indies that would otherwise have remained undiscovered. Arcanum, Geneforge etc. Also, the first place I go to if I want to know if a game is worth my money. The 'codex has actually saved me money insofar as informing me of duds. Gothic3, Oblivion to name two.

The critical nature of the 'codex is in essence - why I face and wade through shockporn, gay furry-shame betrayals, nazis and dumbfucks everyday.

I never said it was an older thing, that's an assumption you, and maybe him, made. Actually, i did not make a single indication of time or duration in my original post. If the cuddling and circle-jerking bothers me and i am a newly registered member, it is implied the things i "moan" about were not ever so. Otherwise, i would not be discussing about a recent change for the worse but the very nature of the Codex. I would then not have joined, as my ideas would have been in direct oposition to the nature of the site, instead of to the current thrend. Why would i join, then? It is called basic reasoning.

And i only mentioned Post-Count on my response because he mentioned i was going for the "Old-Timer Act." I have seen such responses before in the Codex, while lurking.
