Grab the Codex by the pussy
Metal Fatigue.

Layered map (surface, underground, low orbit) + giant mechs with swappable parts. You can blow off e.g. enemy mech's arm and then pick it up from the ground to use it in one of your own mechs. Or send it to the research lab, to reverse-engineer the technology and make more of it.

Pretty cool game.

Please don't post pics of giant mechs fighting each other in a 2D-like scene.
That always reminds of One Must Fall, and THAT reminds me of how we'll never get another game like it...

Hmm so many popular terrible rtses. Age of mythology ? please that was garbage. Empire Earth had cool gimmick but it was mediacore as hell rts.
Here is my list. Since you like base building:

1. Stronghold.
Basebuilding with big B. Create your own castles in campaign missions. Really amazing fortification building system and nice economy. Stronghold Crusader is sequel in time of crusades. Better gameplay but imho worse atmosphere. Avoid later Stronghold games, they are shit.

2. Earth2150 (with expansion packs). Basebuilding + rts + looooong great campaigns with permanent base as HQ. 3 different campaigns for 3 factions and 2 new campaigns for 3 factions for each expansion. Each factions is pretty different and plays differently. You can design your own units from parts. Fucking nice music. Unfortunately a bit dated UI wise and graphically and needs. World goes to war. Eurasian Dynasty with its tanks challenges US mechs with hovercraft moon people in battle for resources before earth is destroyed and someone leaves planet. Game ends when you have enough resources which means the better you play at game the faster you finish game. "adjustments" to play nice. Earth2140 is fucking great RTS but it is more like Red Alert but it has amazing and hard campaign.

3. Warzone 2100. Like Earth series. Permanent HQ and units you can upgrade, design your units from parts etc. research lost technology in post apocalyptic mad maxish world. Really amazing campaign.

4. Supreme Commander. While it is not strict base building game it is very heavy base building game. It is absolute beast when it comes to gameplay as you can roll in 100s of units in total mayhem and with mods 1000s all controlled by amazing UI. Supreme Commander has very nice campaign for each faction as well as its expansion Forged Alliance. FAF is Forged Alliance upgrade client that basically remasters Forged Alliance to hd res, new effects, rebalances game and makes multiplayer work like charm. Has strong dedicated fanbase that plays non stop. Avoid Supreme Commander 2 it is garbage. There is now overhaul mod now that makes it more like SC1 but i didn't have a chance to test it.

5. Dungeon Keeper 2. You play as master of dungeon you create rooms and improve your dungeon and you conquer with your spawn of evil heroes realms. Absolute classic and one of the best games ever with best sense of humor and absolute stellar narrator VA.

Those 5 alone should give you plenty enough gameplay for this year.

DK1 missions are extremely repetitive to the point where you even have to research the same tech over and over again in each mission. It's really boring. DK2's missions on the other hand are very memmorable. Like the one where you start with only an imp and you have to sneak around the enemy base and free your troops from prison. Or the one where you are assaulted with hordes of vampires and you have to capture and convert a monk to fight them. Good times.

So, I gave this one a try and hit a bug which makes the campaign unfinishable. Google didn't help beyond telling me that one other guy had exactly the same problem in the past and didn't get any help. I thought I might as well ask here, nothing to lose.

So, I played the campaign up to mission... IIRC 7, "Defending the Camp". You have to go around on a large map alone, helping out four villages so they'll send you resources in exchange. I've scoured the map, finished the quests, the last of the four supply cart arrive back in camp, and...

I'm fucked. The screen goes black and the leafy borders appear which indicate a 3D cutscene - only there's NO 3D cutscene (or 2D voiced one, either). One second of black screen with leafy borders, then I get the mission victory screen where you can go on to the next mission or back to the main menu. Obviously, I click next mission, it loads... AND IT'S THE WRONG MISSION. After finishing mission 7, the game does NOT load mission 8. It loads mission 6, the previous one. And it doesn't simply load it, it actually reverts your character to whatever stats, levels and equipment it had back when it started that mission originally. The same think happens if, instead of finishing mission 7 properly, I just use the cheat code to instawin.

This happened on mulitple attempts. If I go to the campaign and mission selection screen from the main menu, the selectable missions only go up to 6. Not to 8, not even to 7, which I just finished.

This is fucked up. I'm angry. Also, I installed the Unofficial Patch from here, but it doesn't fix it.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Not really,i didn't have problem finishing the game a few times. Try reinstalling it. Also check out if it is a clip in a folder, maybe deleting the video could fix the bug.

Original War, C&C like with few great twists.

The most important one is personel to man buiding and wehicles gain stats between missions and can perma die, later you can control wehicles remotely, or by computer, but at the cost of much lower stats. You can try to escape wehicle before it blow up.

But there are few more unique mechanics, while gamepley is simply C&C at its core. Mission design is amazing, simply the best and storyline and setting is fun. Overall better then any C&C game.

What has everyone to say about Rising Kingdoms? (except 'Never heard of it')

There also were American Conquest and Cossacks: European Wars, don't know if anyone has mentioned those yet

Just played Close Combat: Cross of Iron. A sort of patched remake of Close Combat 3, where infantry is fixed, and tanks are no longer OP.

Kind of liked it, I played these games when I was younger. But was too bad at them back then.

The idea of the campaign (played as Russians) is that you get steam rolled at first, but want to kill as many soldiers as possible, and keep as much troops alive. And then later you get more reinforcements and can really crush the Germans. They AI gets predictable though.

Wish they would make a remake.

Then there is a Mod of Tiberian sun with a 12 mission campaign, it looks interesting. I think there are a ton of RTS mods that could be really good.

Dark Crusade: by far the best Dawn of War game. Who gives a shit about story, the DoW games never had decent story. The DC game mode can get a little repetitive by the end, but it's still the best game in the series.
Which game has the better single player campaign, Soulstorm or Dark crusade? They're actually the same aren't they?

Dark Crusade has better characters, banter, and stronghold missions.
Soulstorm is an obvious rush job, campaign not even worth it if you like deldar/sisters because dumbass devs made it so bases don't save so if AI moves on map you just grabbed you get to do the match again and it's just another layer of tedium on something that is already fairly repetitive. Bonus fuck you points because Firaeveus is the lamest chaos lord to ever exist.

Mandalore was right:
Dark Crusade for campaign.
Soulstorm for Ultimate Apocalypse mod or MP.

Any one of the discussed games feature

1. Iron man settings of some kind
2. Scoring, ranking or at the very least stat keeping of some kind (I would imagine to be functional it would need to be time based, but that's not necessarily so)

Wargame : Red Dragon

The AI is pretty terrible, but since you will also be terrible when you start playing (the learning curve is extremely steep, hardest I have seen in a RTS) it will be fair.

Action phase of the game is absolutely top-notch, easy to play, insanely hard to master, with real life units of ca 8 nations (for the SP campaigns : China, North korea, South Korea, Japan, USSR, France, UK, ANZAC, maybe Canada too ? Can't remember). Multiplayer has a lot more nations, but you said SP. There are more than a thousand units in the game, though at best half are probably used during the Single Player campaigns.

That's what the RTS part looks like :

The "strategic" part of the campaign is about buying amy groups (do you need a new infantry division, or do you need a bomber squadron, or an anti-air batallions) and pushing them in very nicely done (except one) "realistic-ish". Eg one is about USSR invading Japan, so you start by allocating your paratrooper force to exactly anything you want in Japan, splitting them in vulnerable groups or concentrating them, while waiting for the rest of the landing force to arrive.

Of course, if say you say push your light tank brigade accompanied with a supply battalion and some reserve infantry division without AA escort (neither planes nor ground AA) and the AI decides to counter-attack you with an airborne elite division (with Apache) supported by bombers, you are going to cry during the tactical battle.

Test it.

You can also play Wargame : European Escalation, which has a more traditional campaign (no strategic choice) that is still really solid ; I would avoid the SP campaign of Wargame : Airland Battle.

Starcraft and Warcraft had performance screens at the end of each mission, but personally I would not call it a meaningful feature. To my recollection, Dawn of War II end mission screens give a score depending on how fast you completed the mission, amount of enemies killed, and/or how few of your characters/units were lost during the mission. Better scores also reward you with more xp/deployments if I remember correctly. While DoWII is not a pure RTS, I think it is worth a try.

Maybe Relic will make another Dawn of War game one day.
Not DoW III ....:negative:
