We should put our RPG brains together and try to craft a party that can beat this obscene game before the patches make it easier.

I have a hard time narrowing down 'essential' classes.

I think the Psionicist is hard to beat, and the Paladin offers very useful abilities. Cleric domains can offer some extremely useful abilities so Bishop/Cleric are definitely a must. Gladiator is just good all around, it seems, at least on a Mantis.

So, let's narrow it down:

? Psionicist
Human (the +2 Cha/Wis) Cleric/Bishop
Mantis Gladiator
Maybe Half-Giant Barbarian?

... and the other three? Since a Wizard might be too squishy with all the insane incoming damage, maybe we can grab a gish or Bard, to use the scrolls?

We should list classes that are a must have in a party. I wouldnt use ranged chars, not enough ammo and no good ones, plus everything ambush you and get up close anyway .

Well, my ranger is indeed the least useful of my chars up to now, apart from her reach weapon (which I can give to any other class, too) and her few spells (other classes get more spells). But will possibly get stronger later on.

Bard doesnt use the sroll only option to use them is either rogue or mage knight.Mantis gladiator wasnt so strong , lack of damage compare to barbarian, and oversized feat is bugged. I am tempted to try dwarf gladiator next.

Another question is if we should have a Trip specialist, and whether we want a dedicated Fighter for that, or just have the Gladiator do the job. Trip, in KOTC 1, was one of the ways for the Fighters to stay relevant, and the Pin action can definitely make our other melee characters shine.

You cant afford any dead weight, reach weapon might be better on a samurai they have whirlwind at the beggining too, possibly half salamander to get more energy damage 1D6 i think.

All right, good insights Mortmal. So let's see, we have

? Psionicist
Human Cleric or Bishop
Dwarf Gladiator
Half-Giant Barbarian

and two free slots. One of them has to be able to use arcane scrolls, so it must be mage knight, rogue or possibly a high-CON wizard (dwarf?).
The very last slot could be a Druid or maybe a Monk or a Paladin?

I am also liking the rogue. I do think you need a Paladin in there somewhere...

By the way, Rogue can't use scrolls for dialogue options and checks, but they can in combat.

Get a wizard and put her way back in the formation to avoid AoOs early on. The spells you get are absolutely worth it, I would even say a necessity. I only won the hardest fights due to my wizard's spells.

I beat the efreet with a lucky cast of hideous laughter, for example, followed by a successful daze monster from my cleric's summoned water elemental. Web and grease are staples of my tactics, and you don't get nearly enough scrolls of those. Maybe take a mage knight if you don't wanna be as squishy.

Yeah, I am tempted to agree, most of us 'grognards' know how OP Web/Entangle/Grease are. But the problem is, so does Pierre...

? Psionic
Human Cleric/Bishop (probably Cleric)
Dwarf/Drake/? Gladiator
Half-Giant Barbarian
Elf/Human Wizard/Magic Knight
Paladin or Druid

how's that look?

I'd say mage knight too, how many time the wizard just get shot by archers , grease and webs are indeed mandatory. Theres no taunt either to prevent that . With so many ambushes and surprise round , i wont go for squishy. I am not sure on cleric and bishop either. Paladin works, maybe champion too.

Also I really recommend a fighter ( lightning ) drake , just take all the breath weapon feats and use it every possible turn when it's off cooldown.

The problem with those is that they might become useless later on, it's hard to tell since we're all still early...

Well breathing becomes a move action eventually and full attack a standard action ( for a fighter ) so it scales quite well for high levels.

Psionic. Feats focused on making select psionic abilities better. She's one of the most useful chars in my party since psionic abilities are so flexible. Not tied to spell slots but psi points so you can use them more often, especially the low level ones. The level 1 psionic ability "Stomp" is really, really useful, especially when you pick feats to make it affect only enemies.

You sold me the Psionicist.
I'm going with 2 out of Death Knight, Barbarian and Samouraï.
And probably Sorcerer, Druid and Cleric.

A shame we can't multi-class, Champion 1, Samouraï 19 would have been great.

The Psion gets Grease too, and since Psions have huge PPs (sorry) that might be worthwhile as well. Being able to throw out Grease and Stomp with impunity is pretty great.

Edit: wait, only some Psions get Grease? I don't know how this stuff works.
Further edit: the Psychic Warrior, i.e. the only variant you might want to bring along since he isn't useless when it comes to melee and general survivability, doesn't get it. Nice.

My Champion suuuuuuucks. It's possible that I built him wrong, but he keeps attacking with a <50% CtH for about 3 damage.

Honestly my psion has enough PPs that she can cast her low level abilities all the time, she only ran out after the entire fucking crypt was done.

My pure wizard (with all 18s so high con) isn't that squishy btw, especially since I gave her the magic resistance feats which seem wizard-exclusive. She has completely shrugged off spell effects on several occasions because of that feat.

I just noticed that the combat menu says that L is the hotkey for reload. Nice trap for people there. For those who don't know, L is the quick load key.

I'd just killed the mimics yeaterday but i'm gonna go restart to get rid of the dead wood. From what i played:

My wizard was usually the last to die. Only really needs int so i just rolled until i got 18 con. Mage armour + blur and she was fine. Think wizards are very viable.
Mage knight mantis was fairly useless. Very high ac but to no real end. Not really feeling any of the 2/3rd's casters.
Samurai was fine. Hit people, tripped people. Good shit.
Psionist felt less useful than the wizard but the pp sticks around longer so you can spam more.
Drake fighter was really good. Tripping and death blow is fucking cool. The cone weapon is weak but with another two dedicated aoe'rs the breath was usually just enough to tip the damage into dead enemies. So many good ffighter feats in this game too, i think the fighter has to be strong.
Cleric seems to be THE class, at least early. Domain powers that are effectively 3rd level spells and/or ridiculously strong summons. Don't think i'd replace with a bishop. Can't see anything in the domain powers that would make me want to lose spells. Can't see any extra feats i'd particulary want either.

Think i'm gonna replace the MK with a Paladin/Death knight and rearrange races to try to get more text options + xp.

God damn, I hate rolling for HP on level up. My death knight rolled a 1 and a 2 at the last level.
