All in the title. Don't suggest civilization.
You'll probably have better luck trying to find players for specific games you want to play in various forums. Perhaps like this one?All in the title. Don't suggest civilization.
Why don't you try to find players for a 4x game you like already instead of asking to learn a new one that will almost certainly be inferior and probably have an equally dead multi scene? The only games with independent active communities I'm aware of are A) casualised trash made for normies, like Civ 6, B) Paradox games that have their own issues and C) Grognard games kept alive by those who refuse to submit to A and B, like the already aforementioned Dominons.Dominions is too big brain for me. Recommend something that doesn't require me to learn an entire manual by heart just to get the basics.

Even HOI4 might be too big-brained for OP.Dominions is too big brain for me. Recommend something that doesn't require me to learn an entire manual by heart just to get the basics.
Fine brainlet, HoI4 has a good active MP scene and its very fun in MP too.
going into a MP community for the first time always results in getting slaughtered, part of any experience of entering a competitive sceneI don't think I would want to play it multiplayer because I would get slaughtered
I bet battle for Wesnoth has an active community, but I have never played it and don't know how good it is. I have downloaded it because its free on steam and it seems to have a lot of variety in campaign and scenario design. It looks like an AoW clone, and has been around for a long time and I think it might have an active community. Maybe someone who has played it can say how good it is. But its free, so if it sucks, its not much of a loss, except time, which is not a small thing I admit.
edit: Dominions is awesome, but it does take a long time to master and I don't think I would want to play it multiplayer because I would get slaughtered and I don't think I will ever take Dominions seriously enough to be very good at it. But its fun enough for me as a single player game.

I was going to suggest BfW, but it's not 4X.
You don't need to be a DOM wizard to play some fun blitzes tho.Dominions is too big
Wesnoth is a pretty decent turned-based tactics game. Notably the game is open source and was developed by a community of contributors (you can find the full source on GitHub).oh, I did not even know that, I thought it was.
This reminds me of Aurora 4XThere's exactly one.
