swtor has been a quiet commercial success.
I don't think they'd still exist otherwise.
Their games have been failing critically, not financially.
Anthem didn't meet sales expectations but their goal was something ridiculous like 6 million in the first month, anything lost not meeting this was most likely recouped from whales buying microtransactions.

Depends on what we mean by failing, as Andromeda definitely sold a lot less than EA wanted as well. Dragon Age Inquisition was a success though I believe, as were the games before that, so it's not like they've been failing forever. If Dragon Age 4 bombs though, and Anthem's attempt at salvation does nothing, then maybe...

Codex Year of the Donut Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
I think it would take a lot for EA to shut down BioWare, as they would basically be giving up on their capability to independently produce RPGs. They did more-or-less shut down the studio that made Andromeda, though.

In this day and age, what does a RPG really mean to a big company like EA. Just slap an easily completable skill tree like Ubisoft does on a shooter and be done with it.
I think such a question would be more, who can they buy to replace Bioware on their roster?

And they fired the GM. Maybe that was a shot across the bow.

It'd take a series of financial failures before an admittedly maligned studio with nostalgia-based consumer goodwill and a longstanding business history with EA gets shuttered. Andromeda and Anthem will be remembered as critical catastrophes but such hasn't rendered BioWare nonviable for future projects.

At least not yet.

They are one dragon age flop away from closing the Edmonton HQ and becoming EA Austin, "that MMO studio that doesn't replace anyone who leaves because the playerbase is shrinking".

Swtor playerbase was yuge when I last played it earlier this year. No idea if it was shrinking, but I'd definitely estimate it at about the same size as ESO.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
So...possible remake of Mass Effect. Sounds cool.

Meh.

Only thing that will make me buy it is if they "remake" Liara with really big tits. I suppose that would be enormous tits by millenial standards. Because you retards have no imagination, and haven't seen any of those women (in porn or otherwise) that are simply an example of God's inspiration on earth.

Yeah: tryhard, edgy. But what more do you want from a remake?. Anatomically regular like FF7 + Tifa?.

They are not mutually exclusive.

All of these companies rely increasingly on low-paid, contract work. In the interests of cutting cost, they let veteran designers walk and bring in people fresh out of game design school or whatever who barely know their ass from their mouth. In the case of Bioware, they purposefully fucked over Andromeda. I've yet to see an example of a game ruined by the SJW boogeyman.

I don't think it's just the direct impact people mean when talking about the "SJW Boogeyman",
but mostly the pressure they try to put on these companies via social media, which sometimes is amplified by the media trying to get those outrage clicks out of it, don't get me wrong, its still the company fault for succumbing to this sort of shit, most of those people don't even really give a shit about diversity, racism, sexism, or whatever, they just want to see others bending the knee yo them, it gives them an illusion of power.

Bioware sacrificed a lot of their artistic freedom just to appease to those groups, when the sad reality is that many of them never played and never even will play their fucking games.
No. We are also talking about SJWs 'working' at these studios who care more about their agenda than making a fun product. And the soy orbiters too spineless to tell them 'no' or fire them.

This is not just about misguided attempts to chase a vocal market segment.

I know you are also talking about the ones working at the company, thus why I used terms such as "not just" and "mostly".

Remember when ME:A was released in its incredibly shitty condition. All the flack the company took for the quality of the product and yet they still went out of their way to apologize for not having an equal amount of faggot vs hetro romance options. Those people were actually going to spend resourced to add more ass bandits instead of fixing the plethora of technical problems.

Let's be honest here - most RPGs over the last 20 years have been a buggy, broken mess at release, whether it be the Fallout games, the Elder Scrolls titles, the Dragon Age series, the Neverwinter Nights franchise, Pillars of Eternity and its kin etc. Hell, if you play Fallout 2 without any fan-made patches there is a random possibility that your saves will be corrupted, amongst other wonderful surprises, which is exactly how my first playthrough of the game ended. In reality we've grown completely accustomed to RPGs at release being near-unplayable. I love Pathfinder: Kingmaker, but that game on release was a piece of barely playable shit.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a really good RPG hidden within the shell of a mediocre MMO.

I played Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 without even latest official patches (version 1.0 it is) back in 2008, haven't seen any serious problems. WAIDW?

Yeah, it has some really good stuff in it. I played the whole Imperial Agent storyline and quite enjoyed that aspect of it. The gameplay is just too bullshit WoW style MMO for me to enjoy though, which made doing all the other stories a big no-go.

The Light Side Sith Warrior storyline was one of the best Star Wars story I ever experienced.
It was right up the with things like the "Traitor" book from New Jedi Order series.
It was really refreshing to be playing a Sith that isn't comically evil but is still a patriot, believes in the idea of Imperial Rule, wants to defeat the Republic and then reform the Empire to be less drives by stupid-evil Malak-wannabees.

I enjoyed very much the Jedi Consular storyline. I know that to many people it's the most boring one, but it's basically the only Star Wars story in existence where you performs tasks that the Jedi were created to do - negotiation, archaeology, philosophy, healing, investigation, not just "sword goes brrr..." or "I am your lord/master/general."

I can even understand Bioware's decision here. They look at how well "The Outer Worlds" sold and rightfully think: "That's just Mass Effect 1 without aliens!"
  • Shitty combat? Check. Except even ME1 already had tech, biotics and a crappy cover system. TOW does not even have any of it.
  • Empty open world? Check, but ME1 had variety and a car to run robots over with.
  • Cringy dialog? Oh yes.
  • Companions? Check. And the ones in ME were even likeable.
  • Dialog skills? ME had Paragon and Exxxxtreeeme Collargrabbing(tm). And ironically the C&C wasn't worse.
  • Romance? Check. Active, not just bystander. And your prospective partners looked still normal! Not yet oversexed wymyn or later oversexed men and buttugly wymyn, because muh sexism.

Seriously, looking back at ME1 shows how well this would actually work with upgraded visuals. :|

I enjoyed very much the Jedi Consular storyline.

I'd love to check them out... without all the bloat. A singleplayer conversion of TOR would probably be high on my never-gonna-happen game fantasy list.

The option I would like is the ability to insert your own music - then I would add hours upon hours of OSTs from other Star Wars games and movies.
