Another one who's occasionally gone off the deep end is EnaiSiaion. In particular when Novajam reviewed one of his mods and he had a gigantic meltdown about it.

Then when I checked back on his topic after a few years he was radiating hostility to everyone that posted in his thread, and screaming, "You stupid! It says right in the ReadMe what you need to do here!!!" Are modders naturally bi-polar? Or just misunderstood mad geniuses? Who are the true tools of the toolsets?
Mod users are entitled twats, and someone asking the same question that was asked 100 times before may just trigger mod author going off the deep end.

Besides, the proportion of people complaining and offering their infinite wisdom about what should be done, to people actually doing something about it is about 1000:1. The truly insane individuals are in the first group, and rpgodex forums are the proof of that. You need minimal level of mental stability to actually create something that other people will find useful and interesting.

So, are you a modder or a modder sycophant

A horse of course

a lot of people who dont realize that the dude who made REBORN for STALKER is probably some 60 year old russian dude who has spent time in a mental institution. his moddb page says that:

https://www.moddb.com/members/liqidator

There is also that SimplyYuri guy from the STALKER OGSE mod that gets really butthurt whenever anyone criticises any aspect of the mod.

He seems to have some sort of homing signal for criticism as he'll appear on any place the mod is discussed usually.

truth be told i loved OGSE 0693; this was probably helped by the fact that it had diverse mission design and a great english translation

Another amusing tidbit on the whole Gategate thing, I was using the mod at the time, but I had seen the meltdown before I had updated the mod so I grabbed one of the third party "fixes" for it and when I ran it through LOOT I got a message that said something like "THIS IS A STOLEN MOD! PLEASE DON'T USE IT!".

It's a decent mod overall, my biggest hatred of it has always been the randomised small item hunts and the bullet spongy enemies.

The new OGSR version resolves the latter issue at least.

SimplyYuri hates the new OGSR version funnily enough, despite the massive performance and stability improvements.

I am not 100% sure, but I found an old YouTube playlist called Griskards Fallout Mods, which included two mods called The Foundation for Fallout 3 and the NCR mod for New Vegas. Now if you check the NCR mod on moddb, you can see that a user called NanobyteGhost claims to have created these mods, now if you go back to the playlist, you can also see that the user who created this is also called NanoByteGhost. So I would presume that NanobyteGhost is Griskard, and he is couch surfing from home to home for a very long time now.

edit: NanoByteGhost's YouTube Channel actually is called griskarduk as well, so yeah, it's him

There's difference between average game developer and modder. Its their higher-ups - they got (some) control over the project and there is choice in what will be included in the final game.
And we all know that a lot of stuff simply won't get there, some of them sounds good (on paper at least) but a lot of them are just stupid ideas, mostly a side effect of countless (inner?) brainstorms and whatnot.

Now modders, in theory at least, have limited free time. Surely they should spend some time in "planning phase" to avoid unnecessary work.
But it's not happening.
They get "wind of inspiration in their wings" or some shit like that and start work immediately.
They end up with mess of a project. They don't want it to be wasted so they put it in their project(s) and go meltdown over any doubs in the comment sections and posts.

Speaking of STALKER mods - Misery 2xx for Call of Pripyat is the best example.
In general - stay away from mods that describe themselves as "realistic" because it's gonna be shitshow but combined with "hardcore" - it's even bigger one.

They had no skill (they rely mostly on config files editing) or any clue how to make it in better way, so many binary situations and artificial difficulty situations it's not even funny. It's so convoluted it straight up not works on HDD and barely works on SSD, absolute mess in game files.
These days you have 64 bit engine that works smoother.

Also - wtf that BG1 in NWN2 engine was 1-man work??

SimplyYuri hates the new OGSR version funnily enough, despite the massive performance and stability improvements.

I have deja vu... oh right, there is this mod for Diablo1 - The Hell.
Lot of changes but it still keeps the consistency in comparison to The Hell 2, which is a total shitshow kitchensink.
Someone made HD version of TH1 (60+FPS, higher resolution and windowed mode), then it was removed by the original creator, stating "it was too buggy and unstable". Bitch, it was more stable than TH2 v1.0 on release.
I still got that TH1HD installed, zero crashes or anything and spend unhealthy amount of time with it.

I thought this was going to be about modder drama again and not who spent the most time modding a game.

There was a well-regarded Thief fan mission author (not HawkFlyAway) who supposedly used to constantly belittle Thief community forum members but I never found out who it was, just heard him/her "anon-dropped" on the forum. HawkFlyAway was clearly no ordinary asshole since I vividly remember his hostility on the thief forum (which I frequent very rarely despite my conviction that Thief FM authors are second only to Doom modders as the best out there) and he actually intrigued me enough to check out one of his mods. It wasn't terrible but he had no idea how to restrain himself with on-screen detail and therefore his mods ran like shit.

Speaking of "anon-dropping" I remember the codexer that overhauled Deus Ex incurring the wrath of one of the moderators here and ending up with nearly half a page of epithets under his username - the most I ever saw anyone get on The Codex - but actually reading his posts he never seemed like such a bad fellow to me and his mega-mod seemed solid enough. But it got so bad he had to change his username. But insane moderators are a topic for another day.

CyberP/Ash had a tendency to take things too personally, but he's better now.

I wonder if the craziness comes from not working on their own stuff, but basically doing thousands of unpaid hours work on the gameplay equivalent of fan-fiction that will never or almost never be appreciated by the original creators

Personally I think getting into modding it is a bit like getting sired by a Malkavian. Sure there are some cool perks and new powers you get, but the price is insanity.

Yep, the Misery devs had zero idea how the X-Ray engine worked. They used to ban people from their forums for posting "fake" fixes/tweaks for performance, often implementing the same tweaks themselves down the line.

The first version of the mod was a much better experience when they kept it to a more limited scope.

A Guy spent 7 years remaking BG1 in NWN2.

I don't know what else to tell you

The guy who made that became a professional game developer. Seems he's at Massive Entertainment now: https://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,392780/

Not crazy at all, it seems.

Myself, one of the first 'writing roles' I ever had for a game was way back in like 2004 for an attempted total overhaul mod of the Source engine/HL-2. Wish I could remember the name, it didn't really get too far to my knowledge which I'll get to in a sec here. Basically, there were three guys who cooked up this idea for a quasi-cyberpunk type setting that was way beyond the capabilities of everyone and everything involved. A bunch of people liked the concept and jumped onboard, though, myself included. All three of the main dudes were ... interesting. Two were young, one of which was like a neurotic bully. I don't really remember much aside from him swinging the banhammer around on everyone. The other was younger than literally everyone on the fucking 'team', but he was like the programmer figuring shit out.

And the other guy was older, teetering into midlife crisis and a complete and total alcoholic who would flip out and just use the forums for self-therapy. It's funny cause I just remember this mood in the air every time he was posting and you'd see a bunch of people 'Online' but nobody really responding. It was basically the digital version of this:

tenor.gif

Anyway I eventually just left the project, i.e., stopped going to the forums. Pretty sure it died more or less instantly in the grand scheme of things. Back then, there were dozens upon dozens of such mods going around with the Source engine and I'm pretty sure most are just gone to the aether of time and space by this point.
