Not sure if serious ... I played the NES version up to a point, the combat and related systems are simple, the combat is also slow and the dungeons are empty. The settings is cool and the world is open but the game is really not particularly good, one should rather play the original Megami Tensei on NES for a cool demon-based dungeon crawl.

The art and the setting sure look amazing.

I think someone had released an English translation for the NES version, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. CryptRat did you play it translated?

I've not played it, but here's an overview of the various ports of the game, as well as the semi-sequel on the Mega CD:

Warning: It's HG101 so whoever wrote it may or may not have played the games in depth (it's a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to articles on that site).

Here's a review of the PCE version, written by a TurboGRAFX-16/PCE-loving madman who has actually played through many obscure Japan-only PCE RPGs.

It basically just confirms what CryptRat says about the grindy combat and massive (but empty) dungeons.

Dead serious.
Mechanically the game is a grind, but story/aesthetic-wise the game is a masterpiece. Been wanting to do a run of it for years and wondering if any dexter has taken a stab.

Not so much interested in the NES port as I am in one of the more elegant ports like PCE; though I don't think a translation patch exists for those.
Last I know of there was one guy working on it but it looks like it's vapor: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=29106.0
