Architect’s Office #4

※日本語のアップデートは下の方にあります

Hey everyone,

It’s not just a new day or a new week, it’s the first update of the Eiyuden Chronicle Kickstarter’s FINAL WEEK. How exciting! We’ve come all this way with all of you, and we couldn’t be happier to have such a wonderful community!

This week’s Architect’s Spotlight is going to be featuring some details on some of the modes we recently unlocked via stretch goals. You won’t want to miss it!

But before we return to our regularly scheduled update, a quick announcement.

6th Most Funded Video Game Kickstarter!
Eiyuden Chronicle is now officially the 6th Most Funded Video Game Kickstarter in history! This is an exciting place to be in for our final week. From the bottom of all of our hearts, thank you so much to all of our backers for your support in helping us get to this point. Your belief in us and in Eiyuden Chronicle is absolutely incredible.

This isn’t the end, though! We’re in our final week, and there are still plenty of stretch goals to smash through. We can do this together!

Design Spotlight
On this week’s Design Spotlight, we’re focusing on a few different systems listed in the stretch goals, particularly the card battling game, dueling, and the newly unlocked Farming System.

Card Battles

As you progress through the game on your journey through Allraan, you will get access to a collectible card game. The game’s cards will feature characters and monsters from the world of Eiyuden Chronicle. As you explore more of the game, you’ll be able to collect more cards and build different decks.

You’ll also encounter rivals along the way that you’ll be able to battle with! Become the best there is!

Duels

As you further progress the game, you will sometimes encounter one-on-one duels with other characters, and will work differently from a standard battle or massive battles.

Utilize a unique and thrilling battle mode full of choices and dramatic cutscenes. You’ll even get the opportunity to negotiate with your opponent depending on the situation!

Farming System

Once you develop the fortress town enough, you'll be able to create a farm. There, you can grow crops, veggies, fruits, as well as raise livestock in order to gain meat and milk. All of this can be used as ingredients for cooking, as well as food for the people who live in the town.

Raising your farm's rank will give you access to new types of crops and livestock, and your fortress town will be able to hold more inhabitants, allowing you to further develop it. Selling off excess food can serve as a good source of income for the town as well. And you're sure to discover new food recipes.

Backer Vote Results
There are a few reasons why it was an exciting weekend on the Eiyuden Chronicle Discord, and the Backer Vote was one of the reasons. You came out to the Discord to vote on your favorite design for Character 109, and we have the results to share with all of you today.

Let’s take a look at how the final votes shook out! Our final tally, including those that voted via Kickstarter’s Direct Message system is:

f21ac15996a5ef5774c2cb02e30d5c50_original.png

Congratulations to the Skeleton King for winning the vote! Now that he’s been officially added to the cast, we thought we’d share his profile, which includes some interesting information about our boney friend, including his unusual food preferences…

Markus

PROFESSION: Skeleton king who has “lived” for three centuries

FAVORITE FOOD: Champagne and jelly beans

In times past, Markus tried to found a kingdom for the undead—a failure that cost him dearly and put him to flight. These days, he contents himself with a single castle and a band of loyal followers who, um, might best be described as the “old” guard.

It was certainly an intense competition, and we could see emotions were running high. As Junko Kawano said in her AMA, she was a bit surprised the voting was not more level across all four choices, but it’s much better than one choice blowing the other three out. We’ve seen many backers and fans state that they would love to have Design B (New-Wave Vampire) appear in the game in some way, shape, or form. Murayama-san knows how many people liked Design B and said he'll think about whether there is a good way to keep the Design B dream alive in the game.

Some people felt being able to see the results in real time wasn’t fair, because it was swaying different votes, and we know that some people didn’t like the idea of a vote to begin with.

We obviously want to have the happiest and most engaged community as possible, and while it’s disappointing not being able to make all of the backers happy, we want to emphasize one of the core reasons for the team coming to Kickstarter: they wanted a closer connection with the fans. During the AMA, Junko Kawano also said that she loved all the designs that she works on, so do keep in mind that she would have been happy no matter which design had been chosen. She put the same amount of love and thought into each of the designs.

The group song and this Backer Vote are the first of many fan collaborations that the team would like to continue to do with the backers as development proceeds. This, of course, does not mean that they do not have a vision, or does it mean that the backers are designing the game by themselves. This means that they have largely decided upon the core design, but want this game to be special, not just for them, but for everyone.

Late Campaign Pie-in-the-Sky Stretch Goals
We’ve seen a lot of comments about people worried about “feature creep” and the team getting too wound up in stretch goals to the point where the production will have tons of issues like other major Kickstarter campaigns.

You’ve trusted us this far… We ask that you don’t give into that negativity. That you don’t keep that baggage and you look at this campaign and the four veterans behind it as their own thing.

We haven’t made promises that we couldn’t keep. We have been transparent about things we could do and things we couldn’t. We were fine saying “no” even if that meant leaving money on the table.

We planned for the cheaper production pieces to come in the middle of the campaign and if we felt the gaps were too large we went back to the negotiation table with multiple publishers to make sure those gaps could be shortened.

You’ve seen in-engine footage showing off multiple pieces of the prototype we are working on.

But now is the time to dream. And we want to dream big. Let’s be honest, anyone who's played our previous games will know—They always had a ton of characters. They always had a ton of mini-games. There were forts or towns built. Nothing so far is out of the ordinary for budgets we’ve worked with before. Still though we see people who worry and lose faith.

Well, you can’t build your best game yet if you don’t choose to dream. This is a very big point in all of our creative lives. And we choose to be creative and innovate… NOT risk averse.

So ever since we unlocked Marisa DLC, you are going to see some things that you’ve never seen in our previous games. You will see things that get bigger as we go on. We are asking you to be positive and don’t be afraid. We know what we’re doing…

Oh, and we have up to 100 people we can scale up to, if need be, for some of these more innovative features. So, please keep believing in us—if anything that belief is going to be the core to us making this game the best it can be!

Thank you,

Rabbit & Bear Studios

New Premium Rewards
It wouldn’t be a Monday update without the introduction of new Premium Rewards. For the final week, we’re introducing two new premium rewards that are sure to satisfy. If you haven’t jumped in just yet, now might be the perfect time to do so!

Dig Your Own Grave

For the more macabre backers, you can choose to have your name marked on a tombstone somewhere in the game. Did you lead a peaceful life that ended with a peaceful death, or did you go out with a blaze of glory?

A Brush With Infamy

If you’re looking for one more chance to immortalize yourself in the world of Allraan, this is the premium reward for you. Your visage will appear in a portrait painting somewhere in the world of Allraan. Time to get your “regal” on!

New Add-Ons
For the final week of the campaign, we’re also expanding our list of add-ons with two more exciting options.

Physical Version ($56) 5950 yen

Add-on an additional physical copy of the game to keep sealed on your shelf, or to give to a friend or family member. You can never have enough copies of Eiyuden Chronicle!

Collectible Cards ($35) 3850 yen

We’ve added a set of full color collectible cards featuring the characters from Eiyuden Chronicle as a brand new add-on. Now you can have the entire cast in the palm of your hands!

Currently Available Premium Rewards
32045697e6c21f2514d7e2aae151a663_original.png

As for previously added Premium Rewards, we’ve decided to re-up the Name a Food Ingredient Premium Reward. You’ll find it’s already live for you to pledge! If you missed out on this Premium Reward before, now’s your chance to snap it up!

Reddit AMA - The FINAL AMA
We’re doing one final AMA for the final week of the campaign, and this time we’re taking it to Reddit. The AMA will be hosted on r/eiyudenchronicle, and will take place on Wednesday August 26th, starting at Noon ET/9am PT. This time, all four key members of the development team will be there to answer your questions!

So if there’s anything you’ve been burning to ask them up until now, this is your chance! Don’t miss it!

Merch Spotlight
On today’s Merch Spotlight, we’re going to focus on the Snappies. We’ve had a lot of people ask for mockups for these little dudes. Due to its 3D nature and the manufacturing process, we won’t be able to show a prototype until much later. We are including an artist’s 2D concept art that will require a leap of faith, as the final product might be very different.

c16b8001f66e897bd62f016a49f219f1_original.jpg

However, we’ve included photos of other Snappies to give you a good idea of what it should look like when it’s complete. It’s always scary to show concept art, especially when the final merchandise can look different. Please understand that this is not a prototype. The final quality will absolutely be top notch, and the Snappies themselves will be VERY cute.

Community Thanks
During the last few days, we expect an influx of new backers. That means our already amazing community/family will get bigger. The community is something we’re really proud of. Not only has their passion served as key motivation for the development team, but many members of the community have spent a lot of time answering other backers’ questions, creating new art, and some of them have even been proactively marketing this project. We cannot list everyone, but we wanted to give a few callouts to some of the key people doing incredible work during this campaign:

Community Staff member kasteris - who is largely responsible for the amazing emotes you see on the official Eiyuden Discord.

Roymdj - who has tirelessly created some amazing pixel art based off of the core characters.

NEHawk85 and Darius - who have been very active and helpful on the comments and helped constantly remind people about how Add-ons work!

Ben Wendel - who has helped directly push the marketing with social media spends!

Playwright’s Desk: Murayama’s Novel

※日本語のアップデートは下の方にあります

Hey everyone!

We’re knee deep in the FINAL WEEK of the campaign, which is really exciting! For today’s installment, we’re heading over to the Playwright’s Desk for a special look at an upcoming stretch goal we’re super excited to talk about: Yoshitaka Murayama’s Back Story Novel.

Like any other update, we have plenty more to share, so let’s get to it!

Playwright Spotlight: Back Story Novel
This update’s spotlight is focusing on the Back Story novel. We asked Murayama for his thoughts on creating the novel:

“When I started making RPGs, my only other team member was Kawano-san. She designed the characters, and I thought up the story. We started working together due to circumstantial reasons, and at some point writing scenarios became one of my lifelong vocations.

The joy of creating something from nothing is something that all creators understand, but one of the great joys for me with scenario writing is being able to create worlds, countries, and people, and thinking about how they feel about their lives.

My job is to share all the excitement I feel inside me with other people.

I really hope I get the chance to share one of the adventures in my mind with people through a novel this time, rather than a game.”

And there you have it! We can’t wait to share more about the novel, which will be unlocked at $4 Million, in the future!

Stretch Goal Spotlight
As you will see, we’ve updated the stretch goal list, revealing the names for the next three. We’ve also added DLC tags to the stretch goal list, so you’re able to keep an eye on that as well. And before you ask: no, these are not all of our planned stretch goals. We still have a few surprises left up our sleeves!

Anyway. since we’re doing Playwright’s Desk for this update, it’s a great time to also talk about the Theater System! Let’s get to it.

Theatre System

267fa482421dfbc8b5cec9150d1df0c0_original.png

The theater system is an exciting addition to the Fortress Town. At this stretch goal, you’ll be able to put on plays to entertain your citizens, and there’s even the chance to attract famous troubadours and writers to your Fortress Town to create masterpieces!

With this stretch goal, we’re also unlocking the Playwright Job reward, the final Job Reward set. This tier includes a book that covers the game’s scenario, and an Eiyuden Chronicle themed playbill.

Character 110 - Kunoichi
Starting on Thursday at Noon ET/9am PT/4pm UTC, we will have backers vote for their favorite Kunoichi design. The polls will be open for 24 hours. For those of you who may not know, Kunoichi are female ninjas in Japanese history.

b3eb10e0fe06437ecc61833a0468728b_original.png

Now, the problem: people seemed frustrated at the Character 109 polling process, so we spent a great deal of time looking into options that would obscure polling results until the end. The unfortunate news is that there is no great solution on our official social media platforms that allows for this option. Bots on Discord can be overwhelmed by rapid voting, and break. Twitter does not allow us to hide results until polling is complete. Facebook is the smallest community, and would require an account to vote.

So, in doing all of our research, we are going to go with Google Forms as our solution. We know not everyone has a Google account, but it’s the only way to guarantee that people aren’t double voting. Due to the low numbers, we will still keep the option for backers to choose their selection by sending us a Direct Message via Kickstarter. In order to vote, please click the link below.

Results of the Kunoichi vote will be announced during the closing stream (see below).

Closing Stream
It’s official! We will be doing a closing stream! As this was something we decided in the spur of the moment, and quite frankly from seeing all the passion generated through the Discord AMA, we are nervous as to how well we will be able to pull it off. We are doing our best under a short timeframe to use some of your creative ideas on content, as well as find the right technical solutions to do this with the current pandemic issues.

We will be listing the timetable and schedule for the event in Friday’s update. Again, if any of you have last minute suggestions, feel free to post them in the comment section below. We’ll be doing our stream on Twitch TV, at this location:

https://www.twitch.tv/eiyudenchroncles

Here are the stream times:

  • US ET: Saturday 29th, 8am-noon
  • US PT: Saturday 29th, 5am-9am
  • UTC: Saturday 29th, Noon-4pm
  • JST: Saturday 29th, 9pm-1am
This of course means a very early morning for some of you American fans, a very late night for some of you Japanese fans, and a pleasant post lunch viewing for our fans in Europe. In an ideal scenario, the last four hours of the campaign would not sync up with such challenging time zones, but alas, Kickstarter campaigns end at the exact same time they were launched. There’s sadly nothing we can do to adjust this.

Special 48 Hour Update
While we normally don’t have a Thursday update, as it will be the start of the last 48 hours of the campaign, we will be posting one tomorrow. It will include final reward information, some options to boost the social media goals, and a heartfelt video that we hope you’ll like.

All stretch goals reached, and a companion game announced. Might put forward another $7 for that. I haven't decided yet. I'll stick to my digital tier for now.

I've been replaying Suikoden 2. Partly because of the kickstarter.
I'm just about to go against Luca Blight and it's really enjoyable with all it's characters and cheesiness at times.

Nobody mentioned it but the kunoichi girl that won was D.

Which, honestly, is the best pick really.

Only downer with the Luca fight is if you're fully geared up on all 3 of your teams with the best armour in your HQ he can't really lay down much punishment on your team. 3 unprepared squads is a different matter though.

Backer only update
November 2020 Update

※日本語のアップデートは下の方にあります

Hey there, heroes!

Remember, remember, it’s now November, and that means another meaty update for all of you waiting for that new drip of Eiyuden information. We know the wait for that monthly update can be tough, so we’re trying our best to make sure the wait is worth it.

Surveys
It’s finally here! The main event! The thing you’ve been waiting months for! The Eiyuden Chronicle Kickstarter Survey (survey, survey, survey…)! First, an important reminder: some of you received marketing surveys during the Kickstarter campaign. This was NOT the official Kickstarter survey.

The official survey will go out starting Friday, November 13th (ooh, spooky!) in Japan, and Thursday November 12th in the US. With over 45,000 backers, this will be a process that takes several days to finish. If you don’t get your survey on the first day, don’t panic! It will absolutely arrive within a few days. If you haven’t received your survey within one week’s time, please reach out to us.

Also, please, please, PLEASE check your spam folder first, to make sure the survey didn’t end up there by mistake. The survey will be open for a large part of the development process, but since your answers will allow us to get an early read on some key information, it would be extremely helpful to get your responses sooner rather than later.

We’re also working on a store backend solution that will allow pre-existing backers to purchase additional items. This system will also allow backers to input any reward related details that are not covered in the upcoming backer survey. We appreciate your patience as we continue to develop and test this brand new system.

Murayama’s Monthly Development Update
We are now in the process of fleshing out the details of the game design that were vague before. Right now, a lot of ideas have come from our team members, and my job is to pick and choose what works in the context of the game "Eiyuden Chronicles".

However, I'm often stumped when I'm faced with ideas that are equally good and difficult to decide on. I often wonder whether I made the right choice or not.

And the biggest job I have at the moment is the foundation of the story, the plot. The plot is not only important to the final outcome of the story, but it's also a very important part of the framework of an RPG game.

How many dungeons and towns do you need to create based on the plot, and what kind of design will they be?

They will be affected by the plot, so I have to think about those factors as well.

Unlike regular scenarios, game scenarios are closely intertwined with the gameplay.

How long does it take for the player to be able to control the game on their own after the game starts? Things like that also affect the feel of the game.

With this in mind, I have to keep in mind the biggest challenge of a story, which is to portray how people thought and acted, and how these characters lived, otherwise it will lose its appeal.

The biggest difficulty is maintaining a balance between the plot as a stage for portraying the characters' lives, and the plot as a framework for playing the game.

Juicy Game Updates
With the administrative details out of the way, it’s time we shifted over to the juicier parts of this month’s update!

Let’s start by revisiting one of the monsters we first showed off during the campaign. As development is a living breathing thing, parts can change and evolve over time, as in the Dead Countess, which will hopefully give you some insight into the ongoing development process.

Monster Profile: Dead Countess

Dead Countess

4a02309f7aea994cb49c55b0e82886ef_original.png

A Demon that deceives people, turns them to undead, and recruits them to her kin. She has a distinct air of beauty and loves to decorate her surroundings.

Castle of the Dead Countess

a4bc81ff14bb6646b53a4b1fbca1c3a5_original.png

Once a castle of man, after this abode was abandoned and fell into ruins, Dead Countess and her kin took up residence.

The interior of the castle is crumbling, but it is said that the top floor where the dead countesses are located is furnished with luxurious items in far better shape than the castle’s furnishings, and that the undead hordes raided the surrounding territory to obtain them.

Word has it that the castle floats due to the power of a rune-lens cast by its previous owner.

A lesser update would probably end there, but this is a monthly Eiyuden Chronicle update, and we’re just getting started. It’s been too long since we introduced a new character, and we felt that it was about time. Let’s check out what fresh new face is joining the crew!

Character Profile: Ivy

0523a87378cd3e388c9dd2a5ab9dd5b7_original.png

Profession: Engineer from an imperial workshop

Gender: Female

Age: 19

Favorite food: Milk

Ivy's two massive "rune arms" are her own invention. They're powered by rune-lenses and pack exactly the juggernaut punch you'd expect. Her diminutive stature is a bit of a sore spot with her, so the arms are her way of compensating.

"Sorry, did you say 'shorty'? Oh, you did NOT! All right... We'll see which of us is puny after I rune-slap your scrawny ass into next week!"

Kawano's Comment : I made sure this character is just bursting with energy. You can see there's a faint glow around her torso. The idea we're going with (at the moment, anyway) is that there's a large, glowing rune-lens fitted to her back. We think you'll like the way she moves, especially once you see the pixel art!

To cap off this month’s reveals, here’s a sneak peek at a brand new spooky creature you might come across during your travels in Allraan.

Monster Sneak Peek: Evil Spirit

fa110e61154f866e73edaffed40beab3_original.png

A spirit-type monster found in ruins and caves. They are said to be what will become of a living thing that dies with an obsession.

A Word From the Team
While Murayama-san has been handling monthly development updates, we wanted to offer a space in each update for a different key member of the development team to share their thoughts on the progress of the game. For our first Word From the Team, Director Komuta-san!

“We decided to introduce the core members' messages from this update as well, and I have been appointed as the top batter.

Ladies and gentlemen, Komunichiwa, or Komubanwa, this is Komuta, the director of Eiyuden Chronicles.

It's been a couple of months since we finished our Kickstarter campaign. The planning team has been discussing a "war event" for a while now.

"Let's have a bunch of characters active in the war at the same time."

"I want to show a big army advancing on the battlefield."

The members of the planning team and Murayama-san would work together to come up with ideas for the game and establish a direction for it. How are we going to show a lot of characters? What should it look like visually? What kind of game should it be so it's interesting to play? How should a war in Eiyuden Chronicles be fought? Why not create multiple units with a captain and second-in-command, with a platoon leader-like character among them, and have the player dictate the actions and routes of each unit? I don't think it's suitable for Eiyuden users, or users who want to play RPGs, so let's make it a turn-based type of game. But we don't want to make it a visual representation of just advancing pieces on a hex!...

It's exciting to see the "core of the project" of the blurry war event slowly taking shape.

Sometimes, when a planner says dreamy things like, "Personally, I definitely want to make siege warfare with siege weapons and larger weapons a reality!" they get shot down by engineers and designers...... But I love Eiyuden team members for they are very energetic, asking questions like, "how can we make it happen?", "Maybe it's better if we do it like this!", "Let's make it look like this!", "It could be more interesting if we used this technology!" Thanks to everyone's support, the team is in a great spirit as we work on this game.

Right now, the team is in the middle of developing prototypes of battles and towns that have been put into specifications after going through the planning process. We've shown you a little bit of the battle scene footage and the battle system in the Kickstarter campaign, but in order to achieve the goal of Eiyuden's battle with natural formations, using height differences and obstacles, we've also been playing with implementing special "gimmicks" in the prototypes. We're also working on the concept of creating a "living city" through trial and error, including NPC behaviors.

I'll be teasing you all when it's ready for presentation.

Thank you for your continued support.”

It's very late 90s/early 2000s anime with just a few modern tweaks but it feels oh so right for a Suikoden successor. Like that new girl? She would not have the wicked cool bandana if we didn't have this style. But she does, and I am glad.

December 2020 Update

Hey there heroes!

It’s that time of the year! Hopefully all of you are looking forward to winding down for the holidays, but are also staying safe in regards to covid-19. We’ve got a nice big update this month with plenty of surprises (and even a few holiday gifts!). You’re all going to absolutely love it!

Let’s get started!

Survey Progress
Let’s start with the latest update for the ongoing work with the survey.

Thank you to everyone who has emailed us directly about missing surveys. We are currently compiling a list of those backers, and upon verification, will be finding alternate ways to provide the survey and/or access to the fulfillment store. As this is a manual process which can involve emailing hundreds of backers individually, as always, we appreciate your patience.

Rest assured, we will absolutely make sure that we have gone through all of the emails so that no one is stuck without a way to provide us with the necessary information.

Speaking of the fulfillment store: much of the work is completed, so we’ll be able to provide specifics about how it works early next year.

Now, on to the fun stuff!

Murayama's Monthly Development Report
I’m still hard at work on the plot of the main storyline. As we announced in the Kickstarter, Eiyuden Chronicle has Seign's side story, a side story for Marisa, and a companion game in addition to the main story. I've been thinking about how those stories might fit into the main storyline.

My approach to storytelling is to first create a certain amount of background—a situation—then throw the characters into it and imagine what would happen. I do this as many times as it takes. If I get it right the first time, great, but if the characters don't seem to be going anywhere in the story, then I set up a new situation and start again from scratch.

It's like a game, a sim where I play through different routes. The difference is that I have to decide if it's a success or not, and I’m left to wonder if I really made the right decision.

What's important to developing a good setting and good cast of characters is strong villains. When I showed up at the Discord Channel last month, I asked everyone in the room on a whim, “What's your favorite villain? Aside from Luca Blight, because I already know that.” As a result, I received a very large list of characters. It was a very inspiring and positive experience. I’ve never had a chance to experience this kind of developing style before, and I'm enjoying every moment of it.

Character Profile: Wayve
48bbe826064f2682ffbfe9851361bf1e_original.png

Profession: The Guardians

Gender: Male

Age: 27

Favorite food: Caramel bars

A toughened Guardian who leads his own command. Marisa and the others trust Wayve implicitly, and not just because he's more experienced. He's a man of few words but ample brawn and courage, and he always puts his comrades first. More than once, he's risked his life for them.

"Stop bottling it up, brother. If you're having a rough time then spit it out. We're all here for each other."

Kawano’s Comment:

Wayve is one of the top characters to redraw the face for. Apparently I didn't fully grasp his relationship with Marisa, their position and such, so it took me a while to get to the point where I was able to meet the requested motifs. So every time a retake order came in, I thought to myself, "wow, this character is going to have a lot of screen time (or have something special planned for him)".

A Word From the Team
J-diary vol.1

Hello, I'm Murakami J, producer and art director.

How long has it been since I posted a production note to users?

For the first time in years...well, a decade? It's been so long that I can't even remember.

This is because I was able to safely start the Eiyuden project with your support. Personally, it's been a long time since I've worked directly on a production site.

This project, as you know, has four leaders who would normally work as a producer or director and lead the overall game production.

In addition, all of them have former experience in the field and are skilled at their craft.

Even though they are old, these dependable colleagues are working on site, each with their own role to play this time. So I am able to focus on one thing in peace.

I haven't had this kind of feeling for over a decade.

An environment that is not affected by external factors...

This situation that allows me to focus on being creative...

An atmosphere with like-minded, dependable friends...

Hmmm...how wonderful it is.

Again, I can't thank you all enough.

Well, that was a long preface.

Here's an update.

It has already been three months since then we received your enthusiastic support at the Kickstarter event.

In terms of production, we have been talking with external partners for future phase of this project while reinforcing our internal production system.

On the art side, we are working on the specifications of the battles and city scenes shown at the Kickstarter to make them much close to the actual game, bringing to their final form.

Recently, we are considering a new way to present "one-on-one battle".

The system for the one-on-one battle is still in the planning stage, but Murayama said, he want the "one-on-one battle" to be focused on presentations, so as an art director I'll be suggesting the team something that might become a hint for building an interesting system while dreaming about what I want to do in terms of visual effects and character actions that are different from normal battles.

One of my priorities is probably the pixel art, which will be the most demanding part of this project's art aspect.

I'm giving a lecture to my staff about this, and we're preparing for mass production.

This game will have a ton of characters (and Kickstarter stretch goals added some more), and I'm not going to be able to do it all by myself...

Mass production is our top priority.

I've talked about this in interviews before, but the size of the pixel art in Eiyuden is much larger than that of the past.

This is due to the difference in the resolution of game screens between now and then, but it is quite a challenge.

Since the area of pixels per frame is large, my hand gets strained from time to time.

It is not impossible to make a "pseudo pixel art style" by relying on modern convenient technology, but as a result of experimenting with various techniques, it does not bring out the original good taste of pixel art.

I'm very particular about this, and I spend a lot of time and effort on it, carefully drawing by hand.

Currently, we are working on the pixel patterns for the basic animation of the six characters that we already showed as prototypes.

The production itself is going well, but sometimes I feel like saying the following when I'm on a tedious task of pixelating, and that is...

"I wish I could run from all this..."

Especially when I've been making the similar type of art of the same character forever.

Sometimes I feel like shouting "What is this, some kind of torture?!"

So...

My mind went on a bit of an escape.

To get a change of pace, I jumped the gun, and dabbled with this character.

The character in question is…

309304b635ff184d5b5a9e44810332e3_original.png

This guy.

I call this, "The Epic Fall of Yuphelius VI!"

What do you think?

I'm feeling better after making this. And just like that, pixel art creation is back in business.

I found our sketch artist drawing a rough draft of something the other day, and...

“Yooo!”

"Give it to me!

And just like that, I decided to keep it in the game.

I know I'm basically signing a death warrant by doing this, but I always tell my staff to avoid creating format of the character patterns, visualize the individual differences and make it visible between each character.

So, just like my instruction, I think this art clearly reflects my unique hopes for this Shi'arc.

Our younger staff members seem to be growing up quickly, and I'm looking forward to their future.

So, anyway... I thought it's about time you all wanted to see a different pixelated character, so I thought I'd share this one with you guys.

But if Murayama says "ehhh" three times, we may not use it, though lol.

I'm giving away this full-size Shi'arc pixel art for all of you who support

Eiyuden.

f72df147194251b6aaa7ec3e61c8d408_original.png

It doesn't move, though, because he's completely knocked out.

I'd be happy if you could promote Eiyuden by posting it in various places.

"...And send it to the internet!"

The world is becoming more and more affected by the COVID crisis, but our production team is working hard, staying positive and cheerful.

This is all thanks to the support from all of you. Thank you all.

The game release is still some time away, but we hope to give you a sneak peak of some game materials like this, as a way of saying "thank you".

So, uh... Is this how the "production note" part should be like, or...?

I feel like I'm rambling on for too long.

So I think I'll leave it there (where?) for now.

See you soon.

to all of you who are looking forward to the Eiyuden Chronicles,

with love,

(I know I'm way too early but)

Happy Holidays!

MURAKAMI J

A Holiday Gift From the Team
We know you’ve seen a decent amount of concept art over the last few months, and we know you’ve been hankering for some pixel art. For the holidays, Murakami-san put in some extra work, and had a little Holiday fun with Noah, and a little bird pal.

And of course, don’t worry, as now that production is moving along, you’ll see more and more in-progress art in the new year.

This is our little gift to you all, and we hope you love it! Enjoy!

505 Games: We do Konamidon't. This is their third game by ex-Konami devs.

https://www.gamasutra.com/view/pres..._publish_Eiyuden_Chronicle_Hundred_Heroes.php

505 Games will publish Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

Calabasas, Calif. – February 12th, 2021 – 505 Games has partnered with Rabbit & Bear Studios to publish the Tokyo-based studios’ upcoming JRPG Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes.

Featuring a unique setting, carefully crafted storyline and a massive cast of characters, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a celebration of the JRPG genre readily associated with studio lead Yoshitaka Murayama (Suikoden I & II) and director Osamu Komuta.

“We have dreamed of developing a game for genre fans for many years which also celebrates everything we love and have learned as game designers,” studio lead Yoshitaka Murayama said. “Our team is looking forward to working with 505 Games to bring our first of hopefully many games, Eiyuden Chronicle, to fans around the world.”

Originally announced as a Kickstarter campaign in July 2020, Eiyuden Chronicle surpassed its funding goal within its first day and went on to become the most successful campaign on Kickstarter for a video game in 2020. The game will feature a traditional 6-character battle system utilizing painstakingly created 2D sprites and gorgeous 3D backgrounds with a deep and intricate story written by master storyteller Murayama.

“Eiyuden Chronicle is both a throwback to the classic RPG games that have entertained millions and a modern, exciting tale of discovery and adventure featuring a cast of hundreds of fully realized characters,” said Yoshitaka Murayama, Studio Lead at Rabbit & Bear. ”Given 505 Games’ success and history with titles like Bloodstained and DEATH STRANDING and with the strong personal relationship we have developed with the people there, we feel we have the perfect partner.”

Rabbit & Bear Studios is a collective of talented creators and designers who have worked on a number of famous Japanese games: Yoshitaka Murayama, Osamu Komuta, Junko Kawano, Junichi Murakami, with Michiko Naruke and Motoi Sakuraba as production staff. These individuals have credits including Suikoden, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Wild Arms, and the “Tales of” series, and are considered pioneers in the field of JRPG (Japanese role-playing games). These franchises alone consist of multiple titles and millions of units sold.

They probably will change the name to 573 Games.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Looking interesting, pity there's going to be a graveyard with retarded names on the tombstones somewhere in the game world though.

I remember that was the first thing (of many) that put me off PoE.

Last update was backer only. I removed the stuff I think that they don't want public.

PC Exclusivity Concerns
In combing through the various backer comments, it’s clear that there is a great deal of concern about Eiyuden Chronicle being released exclusively on a PC platform. As mentioned previously, we have confirmed with any potential publishing partner, including 505 Games, that the game needed to be released on PC in a non-exclusive manner.

We know that some people have had bad experiences with previous Kickstarters, specifically due to this point, and we wanted to reiterate our commitment to releasing the game without exclusivity to any one platform.

We feel that this was an important enough point to emphasize, which is why we’re including it in this month’s update.

Character Profile
Barnard Sawad

c37a9adf81e29a3dbb333c92a6a992e1_original.png

Origin: People of the desert

Gender: Male

Age: 38

Favorite food: Spiced coffee

The enclaves of the desert are famed for producing well-trained, disciplined mercenaries, and Barnard is the leader of one such warrior clan. Armed with a slender, crescent blade in his right hand and a dagger in his left, he commands a unique fighting style as graceful as any dance.

To Barnard, a contract is bond. He would sooner die than break faith with a client. His people and the shi'arcs are sometimes rivals, sometimes allies, depending on who's paying.

"A contract's a contract. And a Sawad never breaks his word, or may the sands swallow him. Integrity is my people's way."

Kawano’s Comment:

I got "fighting with a sword in each hand", so I had him mid-swing in an active pose in the first rough sketch. However, it seems it didn't quite match the Barnard Sawad image...

So, here's a silent man with a burning heart inside him. I hope you like it!

Name: Wild Boar

Description:

This beast can do some serious harm if it decides to charge you. Whatever you do, don't stand in front of one! Farmers are at wit's end with wild boars ravaging their fields for food, to the point that entire patrols have been formed just to reduce their numbers.

Murayama's Monthly Development Report
There are many elements that can make a game fun, such as thrilling action, a feel-good story, and puzzles to rack one's brain over. And there are even more elements that make RPGs fun. I believe that the fun of Eiyuden Chronicle—and of RPGs in general— comes from the element of resource management. In short, defeating enemies and earning rewards.

With the money you've earned, you can buy equipment and get stronger, and then take down even stronger enemies to get even more money. In the gaming development world, we call this "expanded reproduction." You invest the resources you’ve earned to earn even more resources. I believe that having that element scattered around in various forms is the fundamental joy of RPGs.

Put in some work and you can level up, get stronger equipment, meet new companions, complete dungeons, and progress through the story. In Eiyuden Chronicle, we also plan to include mechanics like expanding your home base, building new facilities, new minigames you can try your hand in, and new beigomas. These are the elements we plan to provide. Each and every player has the freedom to go after whatever goals they prefer—I believe that the fun of RPGs is in the culmination of those kinds of experiences.

Bento are Japanese lunches packed with various side dishes you can enjoy. We want to make a JRPG that delivers the same type of experience where players can enjoy a wide variety of choices.

A Word from the Team
Kom-nichiwa, everyone. It's now on the next baton pass. This is Director Komuta, and I will be delivering this update.

We were finally able to give you a bit of a sneak peek at what's currently being developed with last month's update. What did you think?

The development team has finished the test build and is moving on to the next stage. We’re currently in the process of figuring out how to solve the issues and problem areas we encounter in the test build, as well as thinking about how we can reach the final product we’re aiming for. We're also making decisions on how best to manage the information that will appear on screen, like the tons of characters, locations, and enemies that are present in those locations.

While looking at the characters, locations, and enemy designs, we've been coming at it like, "I want this character to do this kind of attack!" or "I want this kind of gimmick in this location". Or how we can make even weak enemies look interesting and leave an impression. We have the most fun discussing those kinds of ideas, but...

In order to make those interesting things come to life, we've been poring over graphs and numbers, and talking through our plans of how to make it all happen, pretty much on a daily basis. Sometimes it gets a little tense, but the Eiyuden Chronicle team always pulls through with good spirit.

And in the midst of everything, the other day, we started gathering recipe ideas for food to put into the game. We’ve gathered character ideas,

but we think it's crucial to convey the atmosphere of the world of Eiyuden Chronicle beyond the screen, which is why we're also doing it through food! And now the time has come to showcase a dish that I've encountered on my travels!

This is a must-try that I've been really into lately. It's a regional dish from Turkey known as hünkar beğendi, or "the sultan’s delight," which is lamb meat stewed in a tomato broth and served with eggplant puree. I’m so hooked that whenever I find lamb meat at the grocery store, I automatically pick up some eggplant to complete the ensemble.

5772531b9d7999a130ac5d4115dec4f3_original.jpg

It even goes perfectly with alcohol! It's also surprisingly easy to make, so please give it a try.

*Whether it will be used in-game or not is still pending.

And now that I've gotten hungry, I'll be signing off. The next time we can show you some development screens is still a little ways off, so please bear with us until then. We look forward to your continued support!
