So I take it that things are much the same as they are today in that part of the world.

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain (2009) on DS

After trying the Oblivion PSP tech demo I was impressed by that glimpse of a Shadowkey sequel that wasn't. Wouldn't you know it, hidden in the DS library is a reasonable approximation of how it would have probably turned out.

Sure it could be improved in so many ways, but there is undeniable old-school charm in a barebone dungeon crawler where the only purpose is to make it further, get stronger and defeat the end boss. There's also no music apart from the credits song so out of combat you'll mostly be listening to the metronome of your footsteps. Overall its very minimalistic approach to atmosphere reminded me more of Arx Fatalis than the Elder Scrolls series though it's going to feel very visually familiar to Arena/Daggerfall players and you'll likely find yourself humming the shop tune.

The visuals are an elegant mix of sprites and 3D environments and remain expressive throughout, some areas are way more loaded with details than it feels the DS should be able to handle. I just wish there were more beautiful or scenic environments; the pastoral path at the beginning is a real tease, same for the windy tower at the end. Speaking of the world, it's quite small and very interconnected, you keep unlocking new shortcuts to go back faster, so combined with the excellent controls it's never a hassle to move around.

There aren't many Western-styled RPGs on the DS and it's hard to say no to such a purebred old-school dungeon crawler.

I loved that game.

Two similar games you might want to check out: Orcs & Elves and Mazes of Fate.

Fun fact: I own copies of all three games. I spent a solid month or two hunting them down after I became obsessed with finding Western-style RPGs for the DS.

Half Life 2: G String Mod.

One of the longest HL 2modifications that I've ever played and finished. The gameplay is rather clunky, but the atmosphere and strange setting made me go forward.
What did you think of the K-pop segments with the rooty-tooty-point-and-shooty?

So this is a a demo/prototype for a SH-based (surprise) TC that may or may not happen. It'd be a shame if it didn't, as the demo is pretty impressive and all is pretty much in place mechanically.
Took me around one hour to complete. One's graded at the end, based on the number of times one saved, used healing items, how many areas one discovered etc. as befits an old fashioned survival horror, so there's some replayability to it.

The choices of music tracks sometimes were questionable, but it's the authors privilege to put anything he wants. I hope that in standalone version it will be more suitable for this weird setting.

I admit, it took me awhile to figure out how to work with this balls.

I never figured out how to use the remote detonation. You can trick this boss to turn his vulnerable part to you with a few shots of LN-DUO.

Hey! I only needed walkthrough to check two things, it doesn't count!
It was my first time playing it but this game would definitely have been one of my childhood favourites had i played it back then.
There is a lot running back and forth that i hate but overall it's a good game.

Call of Juarez 1 looks still pretty good using the DX10 version. One of the few game that uses effects properly, the blazing colts always feel great.

Lets say a little prayer for the unfortunately deceased,

The english voice acting for Ray is also brilliant.

The whole thing can be uniquely exhausting to play but holy shit if the size and detail of these maps isn't impressive. There's 22 of them, where every single one - or even particular portions of certain maps - would've made for a formidable standalone release.
