What I find a waste is that the games that do implement this feature almost never do anything with it. Dark Messiah is a border case because you're kicking a lot of orcs from ledges and knights into spikes, but most of the time it's neat the first time you look down but then you forget about it. Like in the third Thief game. Trespasser had the health meter as a tattoo on your bust and that was novel, but where are the games that takes this thing and makes it important to both the gameplay and narrative? That actually makes you think about your in-game body, where it matters. As already said in this thread most of the time it's a lot of investment of time, money and effort on something that doesn't pay off.

Lower body is mandatory for me at this point, even serving no purpose. It's like seeing your hands and gun on a shooter: it's not mandatory since all one needs is the crosshairs, but without one my immertchun breaks.

Drawing body kills framerates, and obstructs view from user. For performance, it's better to draw realtime shadow, than bother with body and shadowing the body.

Call of Juarez 1 also does this. It has generally a very "physical" feel to it. You can move objects by running against them, pick up most shit and throw it and so on. It is a shame that they removed these features in CoJ 2. Its was really "dumbed down" for consoles, which is extremely apparent when you start playing CoJ 2 after CoJ 1.

I think Bound in Blood and especially Gunslinger are still relatively enjoyable despite being consolized, but the first one really is a special game in a lot of ways. Not amazing overall maybe, but it has a lot of unique charm to it.

Interesting point of note on that point is that the main character has no head. Frankly I'm surprised the wizard robes had exposed fingers since most of the models had gloves that hid Sereth's skin.
