Or maybe Breath of The Odyssey. This was the main announcement from Ubisoft E3 conference, seemingly no one cared.

Can you tell us about the powers and abilities you'll have, and how they interact with the world?

JD: We designed Odyssey with special abilities, so we took that and put it on steroids for Gods & Monsters. When you're fighting and you trigger your abilities, you're going to wreck the enemies you're facing. You can expect fast-paced combat that takes place on the ground and the air. For example, if you're fighting a cyclops, you may have to double jump to reach his head and hit him in the eye to blind him, so then you can fight him on the ground. We also have aerial enemies like harpies.

In addition to the godly abilities you'll have, you'll also have magical items, like the Boots of Hermes, which allow you to double-jump and get to places you wouldn't be able to access before. There are plenty of items like that, but we're saving them for future surprises.

What is Gods & Monsters doing that separates it from other open-world adventure games?

MAC: What we see as the most differentiating factor is how we approach the narrative. It's a light and humorous story that we're going to tell, and we think it will make this feel unique. Players can also customize the appearance and stats of the protagonist, Fenyx, so we hope that players project themselves onto our hero.

The player is also going to be challenged through combat, platforming, and resource and stamina management. The combat is ability-based, but those abilities can also be used to traverse the world.

JD: The world is beautiful; the art style is this vibrant, painterly style, so it's a very bright and colorful game. We're going for a more inviting and approachable art style for this game.

What sort of customization and character progression can we expect for Fenyx?

JD: Fenyx is fully customizable as a character, but once you start the game, you'll be able to customize your armor and gear to your liking. We'll have much more to talk about on that later on.

Accidental leak of 2019 E3 demo via Stadia:

Apparently they have changed the name of the game: https://kotaku.com/gods-monsters-accidentally-goes-live-on-stadia-for-30-1844004300

“Regretfully, on Thursday morning, we mistakenly made an E3 2019 demo version of Gods & Monsters from Ubisoft available on the Stadia store that was not intended for the public to play,” a Google Stadia rep told Kotaku via email. “A few hundred gamers were able to play it for less than 30 minutes. We sincerely apologize to our partners at Ubisoft for this mistake.”

“Our vision for the game formerly known as Gods & Monsters has evolved in surprising ways, which is common when developing exciting new worlds,” Ubisoft Quebec executive producer Marc-Alexis Cote explained to Kotaku. “This footage is from our E3 2019 demo, which was shown to select press last June and is now over one year old. Much has changed since then in terms of features, tone, art and character design, and even the name of the game. We are hard at work and very excited to finally show players what we have created at the end of summer.”

An Ubisoft rep told Kotaku that Orpheus is not the game’s new name despite appearing as such in the Stadia leak. The developer plans to reveal that information during next month’s Ubisoft Forward broadcast.

Ubisoft's Gods & Monsters likely has its new name
A name of JRPG proportions.

The Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee has rated a game called "Immortals: Fenyx Rising" by Ubisoft for PC and consoles.

It's highly likely this is the new title for the delayed Gods & Monsters, which was originally supposed to release in February this year. Back when an old demo of the game briefly leaked on Stadia, Ubisoft called it "the game formerly known as Gods & Monsters" in a statement to Kotaku, and planned to reveal more info towards the "end of summer".

Seeing as the protagonist's name is Fenyx, this is probably the new name. As this is one of five games Ubisoft wants to release until April 2021, this is also a good candidate for a reveal during the next Ubisoft Forward event in September. Since Gods & Monsters has been unveiled at E3 2019, news about the game have been basically nonexistent. It's an open-world game in a world of Greek myths, featuring a more whimsical and cartoon-y style than Ubisoft's regular output, especially Assassin's Creed Odyssey, with which it shares its team. I'm all for more lighthearted games going forward, and Greek myths are as popular with the rest of the world as they apparently are with this specific development team, so I'm looking forward to more. Not that I've finished Odyssey. Some games are meant to be enjoyed forever.

Somehow the new look reminds me of 2000s when some western developers tried to emulate Japanese game aesthetics and made some weird hybrid. Maybe they changed the name to fit that direction.

Maybe the CEO likes how the title sounds in french. Or they are going after those Divine Divinity dollars.

"Divine Divinity", for all the derision that title has drawn, is a completely acceptable title compared to this; it's definitely cheesy and hokey in a Ed Wood or Amanda McKittrick Ros kind of way, but whatever. It lets you know what you're in for: a B-effort product that doesn't take itself all that seriously. "Immortals: Fenyx Rising" on the other hand is just gobbledygook nonsense that sounds like it was thought up by a 9 year old after eating too many Sour Patch Kids. "Gods and Monsters" was a perfectly fine title that told you what the game was about: Gods and Monsters. Has the game changed so much that that title is no longer accurate?

Probably discovered a conflicting copyright. And got a big head about it becoming a long-running franchise.

No way. That particular title (“Gods and Monsters”) has a long-standing history of usage in Western culture, the vast majority of which predates copyright law. This was something else.

Being unable to copyright it would be a conflict. One that would have been missed in a database search.

Ubisoft changed Gods & Monsters’ name after a trademark challenge from Monster Energy
DRINKS FIRM OPPOSED UBISOFT’S TRADEMARK EARLIER THIS YEAR, DOCUMENTS REVEAL

gods-and-monster-name-change-320x180.jpg

Ubisoft’s decision to rename Gods & Monsters followed a trademark opposition from Monster Energy, US Patent and Trademark Office documents have revealed.

Action-adventure game Gods & Monster was first announced in June 2019 and re-revealed last month under the new name Immortals Fenyx Rising.

Ubisoft claimed in a VGC interview this month that the title’s name change was “entirely because of the vision of the game” and not related to any trademark issues.

However, it’s since emerged that drinks firm Monster Energy filed an opposition to the Gods & Monsters trademark in April of this year – two months before Ubisoft first confirmed it had decided to rename the title.

Monster claimed in its opposition documents that the Gods & Monsters game would damage its business and highlighted its involvement in the games industry, including its sponsorship of esports teams and events, as well as its own games site monsterenergygaming.com.

Gods & Monsters had its name changed to Immortal Fenyx Rising.

A month later in May 2020, Ubisoft responded to the opposition filing and denied Monster’s claims.

However, by June the company was already referring to the title as “the game formerly known as Gods and Monsters” and confirmed it intended to change the name of the game. The trademark for Immortals Fenyx Rising was filed last month.

According to Hoeg Law’s Richard Hoeg, Ubisoft likely would have defeated Monster’s opposition to the Gods & Monsters name. However, in doing so it would have sacrificed a significant amount of time and money fighting the claim.

“Opposition to a USPTO filing can essentially win the day because it’s too expensive to fight,” he said. “The fact that Ubisoft is a publicly-traded company doesn’t change the fact that they don’t want to fight expensive fights, especially when there isn’t a real certainty of winning.

“Yes, I think they would have ultimately have defeated Monster Energy’s push for opposition, but at what cost? And at what time? And what level of marketing would have been affected?”

In an Immortals Fenyx Rising interview held and published last week, the game’s associate game director Julien Galloudec twice denied its name change was influenced by external factors.

“So no, the change of name was entirely because of the vision of the game,” he said. “When you start a game it’s always an adventure and it’s a very iterative process. So you start with a vision that evolves as you craft it with the team and we get feedback and ideas.”

He added: “So after that, the game changed a lot, to the point where we felt we needed a new name to be better aligned with that updated vision, so that’s where we decided to change to Immortals Fenyx Rising, a name that combines the notion of the timeless aspect of the Greek mythology with the immortals.”

Developed by Assassin’s Creed Odyssey studio Ubisoft Quebec, Immortals is described as “a storybook adventure about a forgotten hero on a quest to save the Greek gods”.

Looks like a shameless BotW ripoff, but with worse stylization.
