Paladin. The archetypal hero in western canon. Almost always a good pick because game designers know that, and write their games with such a character in mind.

If there is an decent evil path, I sometimes go with wizard.

While it can diverting to occasionally slum around as a caddie or trash remover, we all know Wizard is the distinguished choice.:obviously:
wizards wear dresses
So did the degenerate Romans.

Oh come on - they had to fight the Germanics from the North, the Huns from the East and finaly the Muslims from the South. We won't die as glorious.
Not really, they had to fight themself the most. They conquered all those lands, but instead of killing off all the barbarians and developing those lands as their own, they became greedy and used them as slaves, market and later soldiers. I am not big fan of the Romans, most dumb people just glorify them and don't see them as cautionary tale. An empire that lasted less than 500 years,of which more than half was a decrepit failed state that was ruled by incompetent elitist high on their own farts. People glorify their architectural achievements, their writings, philosophers and gods....but what good is all that when there is not a single person left of their culture. Just a bunch of barbarian moneys dancing on their long forgotten graves, larping as sions of their lost civilization. Their tombs of their paragons, now a piss stop for drunken tourist and horny locals, their great monument a quick selfy for young sluts to brag on.

My favourite are battle medic/cleric/paladin classes. Basically I wanna be capable of healing, buffing, resurrecting my party while also contributing to combat with a big mace/boomstick. I'm also almost always a group's healer in coop games with friends

Monk. I have always liked the idea of fantasy martial arts

Good Gods, what perversion. Playing a proper monk would have you brewing beer, maintaining herbaria or copying books :obviously:
Which is doubly funny if you were to roll a Monk in Baldur's Gate. All the other monks are your typical medieval photocopiers, but you somehow ended up as the Bruce Lee of Candlekeep. Then again, there's other classes that wouldn't make much sense at the start of BG.

Rome achieved the most when it was a Republic. Then come the decline:

Firstly, they turned into the Empire by the virtue of this faggot Caesar.
Secondly, they adopted Christianity.

From then on, the fail was imminent.

I like ranger - you somehow developed abilities to track prey, affinity with nature, a deep loathing of gnolls or whatever etc etc while staying indoors all your life? Did you get radicalized by anti-gnoll books?

Your PC saw a book in the Candlekeep library that meticulously documented and illustrated gnollish mating habits and ever since then you've had a deep-seated hatred of those FUCKING FURRIES.

NPC shit, but at least it's good NPC shit.

Come on. I dare you to be imaginative and come up with a PC concept for a proper monk. Not that hard, really.
Would probably involve being a divine full-caster like a Wizard with a lot of focus on being able to create divine spell scrolls, be the party cook/apothecary/fountain of knowledge and intercessor/mediator particularly in matters of faith as well as a decent medic. Make the Cleric a militant battlepriest.

A divine full caster? Just be a fuckin cleric, dude. The monk is obviously supposed to represent the eastern martial arts traditions, some of which were, in fact, perfected by religious monks. It has a way different flavor the cleric, especially in PnP. Making it a fuckin divine caster would be ass.

Being the party apothecary is a good idea though. They should have a pretty intimate knowledge with herbs and potioncraft, being generally pretty literate and most likely able to use magical scrolls of some kind, or at least read magic.

Yep, that was one. Barbarian, Druid and Paladin are also rather iffy.

I like Rogues with some magic.

I used to go for Rogue/Sorceror (fuck Bards, they might be nice mechanically but thematically ughhh), but now Warlock seems to fit the bill. Devilish/Demonic pacts are p. cool.

Barbarian has to be the least realistic. The sage Gorion raises you, in one of the most advanced academic institutions in the realm, having to take lessons and classes every day like we learn from Imoen, and you grow up to be an illiterate savage who mindlessly bashes things like Conan.

You've never worked in a public school, I see.
