But I found it enjoyable only several years after playing Crysis. What exactly has aged badly about it? The games are only three years apart.
They might only be 3 years apart, but there's a significant difference in graphic fidelity between the original CryEngine, which Far Cry used, and CryEngine 2 which was used for Crysis. The animations were improved quite a bit as well.
Certainly, but Far Cry is still a nice looking (just nice, not remarkable, to be clear) game for the visual design it has, while of course its graphics are not state-of-the-art in any way at this point. I'm sure the animations were improved in Crysis, but it's not something that detracts from the gameplay in FC (except for that bug where enemies don't raise their guns to aim at you and bullets fly at you while the gun is in a resting position). But I found it enjoyable only several years after playing Crysis. You can add custom keys for the suit modes very easily in actionmaps.xml for Crysis:Only gameplay change I kinda like is having an instant cloak on and cloak off key, makes it easier to uncloak, headshot a guy and then cloak again. I wonder if there's a mod for that for the original.
I think everything in the alien section betrays what made the first half of the game great, changing from open levels with multiple approaches and varied enemies to linear cinematic spectacle. That last level on the aircraft carrier is maybe one of the worst levels in FPS history. Completely against everything the game does well, with annoying combat, tedious tasks and dumb story moments. However I'll defend the alien stuff before that, when it's out in the open it's a nice change of pace and the snowy landscapes add much needed variety. Those levels aren't as good as the first few jungle predator levels, but they're still fun. Also they're much shorter, and I'd say the game is 80% blasting Koreans.

Levels get narrow and side objectives disappear entirely. The zero-G level has a single enemy type, the remaining levels three. And they're actually less of a threat than the Koreans. In the level where you escort Prophet, you can just run past all the enemies to the end, and not even the flying aliens can hit the player enough to take him down on Delta. If that had been a helicopter and assault rifle Koreans, the player would have been minced meat.
Looks like they changed more than the time of day, apparently Morrison nukes the island much earlier in the Remastered version. Duck and cover, Nomad!

graphics
oh so it's nothing then
Just finished it and Crysis Warhead is very good. A little more linear, but good action fun with a much better story.
Crysis 2 now? Hmmm...
If so, do yourself a favor and lower your expectations before starting Crysis 2.
So this is actually your first time playing the series other than the original? If so, do yourself a favor and lower your expectations before starting Crysis 2.

It was my first replay of Crysis Warhead since it came out, but I played Crysis a few times. I just didn't remember Warhead that well so some things might have sounded like I was discovering them for the first time. I remembered thinking the train level was cool, and I'd still say it was kinda cool, but overall I prefer the more open stages in the first half of OG Crysis.
Crysis 2 I played when it came out, never since. I remember thinking it was a huge downgrade but still better than most shooters at the time. Crysis 3 I have actually never played.
Not sure why I've never played Crysis 3. I've owned it on Origin for years, but I've never felt much of a pull to check it out. I think I simply lost interest in the franchise after Crysis 2.
Crysis 3 is not bad if you know what to expect, it just doesn't continue the large open levels like Crysis 1. It is a lot more linear and "cinematic" with cut scenes and stuff, but not as linear as CoD for example. The areas are still fairly large and open at times, just not Crysis 1 large. The gameplay itself is still better than average and the art design of the levels is gorgeous at times. It has a bunch of good levels with excellent atmosphere, like the swamp at night and the high grass area where you get hunted by the aliens. The story telling is bad, like a bad movie trying hard to be epic (Independence Day 2 comes to mind). It can be enjoyable if you don't expect something like Crysis 1. I'd say its stuck somewhere between Crysis 1 and CoD like games, tending more into the CoD direction but it is competent as such.So this is actually your first time playing the series other than the original? Just like me then. I've played Crysis and Warhead a couple of times, Crysis 2 once, and have yet to play the third game.

I might play it after 2. I recently did a run through all the FEAR games like this too. I hear Crysis 3 is better than 2.
I just played the first few levels of 2 and it's basically like FEAR 2. Obviously not a PC exclusive anymore, obviously not as good, but still enjoyable if you're able to take it for what it is. Shooters of that era were pretty rough for the most part to my memory, and this one feels well above par for that time.
I thought it was very average for that era, and that's judging it on its own and not against Crysis 1.
