Why do people like Disco Elysium's writing so much?

It's written by a deeply depressed, drug addled college kid from Eastern Europe who fantasizes about Communism and what could have been, if only things were done a little differently.

So if you're into college humour, Rick & Morty, hipster sarcasm/irony, nihilism, drugs, depression, degeneracy, vulgarity, etc. etc. then it might appeal to you.

That's why so many game journalists slurp it up, it appeals to them emotionally and it's written by a fellow comrade. So they are more than happy to boost the signal "10/10 RPG of the decade, best writing ever!".

This is Zoe Quinn's depression quest on a bigger budget, or Grand Theft Auto without the fun.

Another one of those dimwits. Muh GOMMUNISM ruining everything.

What's the problem exactly?

The writer is a hack who romanticises Communism. He's not a hack because he's a Communist. He's a hack because he's a hack.

Gayming journos are largely cat food-eaters who also romanticise Communist/Marxist/Socialist ideals. Yes, all of them at the same time. Yes, they're different, and no, it doesn't matter.

So when they see a pro-Commie writer make a video game, anything he does will automatically be good and praised to the high heavens. It's that simple. His game will never be attacked for sexism or racism, despite being more sexist or racist than any game made by Warhorse Studios, Golden Era Games, or Rockstar Games. Why? because he plays for the same "team".

I don't understand your disagreement with my original post. Unless you're one of those mongoloids who doesn't believe journalist are capable of bias, spinning narratives, or lying to protect their own and helping them profit/succeed, while at the same time sabotaging those they view as "ideological enemies".

Are we just gonna pretend the writer isn't a Communist and the journalists don't love him because of it? Fuck off.

I'll keep it short 'cause I'm going to sleep.

NOBODY romanticizes communist ideals. Just because not everybody is a cryptofascist to whom communism=Satan=transsexuals=taxes and doesn't feel a compulsive need to tell everyone how evil bolsheviks were the moment he hears "communism" doesn't mean he has a faintest idea about communism, much less that they support it.

The writer doesn't play for any team and the game does not try to make a political statement nor is supportive of communist ideology. It's just what your brain tells you is going on when you don't get what the game is about. You react quite similarly to people praising the game, just instead of praising it for being deep when they didn't understand it, you ascribe it to some vomit created by whatever political movement you dislike just because you detected a word you don't like inside of it. Your understanding is superficial, if we're being generous, and you twisted whatever you did managed to understand into something to reinforce your preexisting conviction that the world is dominated by evil commies who have no taste.

Just because the game depicts sexism or racism or communism doesn't mean it's making a statement in favour of those. The sole purpose of political motifs in this game is to mock the main character for trying to hide his broken self from the world and more so, from himself behind some ideology he doesn't really care about be it monarchism, socialism or whatever. It's only your willingness to find a political statement there that allows you to do it and THAT is what the problem is exactly.

Theodora I wasn't being edgy, Kurvitz in his own words stated this was his goal.

In an interview with GameSpot, Kurvitz explains that contrary to the hand-wringing we’re all subject to about young ‘uns these days, people really do like reading. They read Twitter, text messages, chat apps, and Reddit among so many others. It’s just a matter of making the text “snappy” enough and displaying it well.

Kurvitz explains how Disco Elysium’s text is displayed in the bottom right corner of the screen where players may already be used to looking at their operating system’s dash, rather than in the center bottom the way that so many other RPGs display dialogue. He also believes that text is best read in a column, unlike the wide, short text boxes of something like the original Fallout.

Disco Elysium’s dialogue jumps up with each new line, at times without any input from the player. “We wanted to build a dialogue system as snappy and addictive as Twitter,” Kurvitz says.

Make the Codex Great Again! Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. I helped put crap in Monomyth
Acording to the game I'm a moralist, so why did I love it if it's a communist game?

People do confuse the system being twatter wife with the dialogue being twatter wise. I see no problem with them making new system for rpg dialogues. The writing is pretty solid and have nothing to do with twatter tho.

People that bitch about the writing being communistic are asocial retards. The writing is realistic, there are communists, fascists and libtards in the real world, just like in the game. Bitching about seeing a communist in the fucking game is no different than bitching about muh women being oppressed in game and all that sjw shit. The game is nuanced written and it have hyperbolic elements when representing all the fucking political ideology,it doesn't represent one in better or worst light than the others, all of them have pluses and minuses lol.

And how exactly "the writer" (to my knowledge the game had multiple writers) "romanticises Communism"?

Here are a few examples depicting communism that I've found:

COMMUNISM

No one wants to be associated with communism by the time you get there. The party is over. They'd rather call themselves socialists and social democrats. No wonder – commies got their asses handed to them 50 years ago. Their little commune got wiped off the face of the Earth. Even worse, the civil war gave foreign powers a casus belli to invade Revachol and now look at the shit we're in. Also, Kras Mazov, the father of scientific communism killed himself.

Don't pick this ideology. It's a swamp of melancholy and would-have-beens. Also, they, like, killed a lot of people. There's a smart centrist man who once calculated that communism has killed 100 billion people in total.

What are you trying to show me here? The depressed ramblings of a defeated Commie larper, who was probably on drugs at the time of writing? It reads like a diary entry.

I wasn't referring to the dialogue in the game, but that was a good laugh none the less.

The lead writer is a self admitted Communist who sleeps next to a bust of Lenin. Does he still live in a dirty Estonian apartment with his fellow devs, or did they move to the UK? They'll fit right in.

Yeah, it's dumb to confuse playing on our broken psychologies to mean that the contents are equal to social media.

It's more than obvious they would've made the game much the same even if they hadn't employed this design philosophy.

Oh, OK. I thought you meant the writing in the game is praising communism (which is a pretty common argument).

Seriously, got any links about him being a commie? I'm curious.
:hmmm:
Does it really matter? For example does MCA being a western libtard that got cucked by some saggy bitch on twatter spoil the quality of his works? I don't care about the political ideology of the people that make the game, the end result is what i care about. If they spew their political shit all over me screen and it is not similar to mine, then i don't like it and move on while bitching. Disco let me play a nice fascist racist, and that a lot more than any western games allows me to do.

All the retards bitching about the devs being commies and ignoring the quality of the game should be banned with all the libtard sjws that bitch about endless inclusion and shit! In the end they are both deranged amercan scum.

Disco was one of the most beautiful, most heartbreaking, and most hopeful experiences of my gaming life. It made me cry as I played it and then I cried again when I talked about it with my girlfriend.

The fact that she didn't run away screaming after seeing a grown man shed a tear over a videogame character is the true surprise twist in this story.
That one is a keeper. Don't know if you are joking or serious, but disco does have very human writing.

I wasn't joking. I truly enjoyed the writing in this game, and I really did shed a tear in front of her.

And I don't think the game is communist. Just look at the end "villain". His entire life is the tragedy that ensues from following communism blindly. Instead, the game exposes the faults of all political ideologies and that is the whole point: if you do decide to choose one of them, the game makes it clear you are simultaneously either embracing or denying its darker aspects, and each one has those.

But honestly, for me the political shenanigans pale when compared to the central issue: and that is that the detective case you are working on serves as a framework for your one last chance to save your soul, find hope in a dying world, abandon destructive behaviour, and attempt to move on from the loss of Dora. Or not. The choice is there, and the game is just as good whatever you choose.

I always thought that the problem with gaming journalists is that they blindly serve big corporations. like supporting micotranslations, loot boxes etc. The more you know.

To me the problem with journalists always was that they serve as marketing extension for the big publishers, because if they leave too low review they won't get the review copies and won't be invited to get some "exclusive" material. This less likely to happen with smaller games, but at this point I'd rather listen to someone who's really independent and is talking honestly about the game, regardless of what the publisher will think.

Rant about communism below.

Communism is so passe that I can't really treat anyone talking about it seriously anymore. It's 2020. Communism is fucking dead, but some people seem to be stuck on it.:deadhorse:

The only tie to the actual communism that remains are some super old people from the former communist opposition (the post-communists are out) who are so deep in the Cold War era mindset that they are actually using communist methods and are either too stupid to realize what they've become when they look in a mirror or know perfectly well what they're doing and are just being cynical power-grabbers who simply tell the sheeple what the herd wants to hear (because the country has a lot of old people at the moment and sadly people don't get wiser with age), so they can remain in power, while the economy starts crashing around them (because, of course, they have no idea how to operate it). This is a shitshow, and the fact that the old satirical movies, which were made under the communism, still remain very much accurate when describing the current situation makes for a very fine point.

It's the problem with whole access media in general.
I blame the birth of social media for opening the door for small albeit very verbal minorities who use the support from some media outlets to put pressure on developers. Otherwise we wouldn't have this much talk about "liberalism"/LGBT, etc.

The fact that games like Disco Elysium and Kingdom Come: Deliverance or The Witcher series can become a commercial success and get universal praise is proof enough for me that if a game is good, then it will be liked by the general playerbase and it does not need the support of journalists or to pander to the Xtreme Left, because that's what they are: a very verbal minorities and nothing more (some people rightfully said they don't have the purchasing power, so all they can do is scream loud enough and hope it will make an impact by creating waves in media). And if your game is shit, then it will be shit no matter how praised it will be by them.

Nah, that's baby stuff.

Although gayming journalists are corporate bootlickers, it doesn't matter if it clashes with their other views. This is the same group of people who align Feminists with Muslims, bitch about corporatism on their iphones, and say "ACAB" knowing they need the police more than anyone.

American politics is a smorgasbord of shit all mushed up together. Marxist corporate shills and Muslim loving Femdogs all working together under a rainbow banner. None of it makes any sense because it doesn't need to. Their only purpose is to spread chaos.

Besides everyone needs a paycheck, even larping revolutionaries.
