Haven't played QW, but both Avernum and Geneforge manage to combine interesting settings with open maps that are fun to explore. I don't need fancy graphics to enjoy a game, good old fashioned monster slaying is enough.

It's not the primitive graphics of his games I find visually off-putting, as I like plenty of games with primitive graphics. It's shit visual design. Underrail looks ten times better for example, because it's designed by someone who doesn't want to put glass shards into my eyeballs.
