Ultima Underworld 1 & 2 had jumping, no one was saying it was a poor fit to the series or calling them "first-person Mario".

Underworld was a spinoff series and marketed as such. Ultima 8 was part of the main Ultima series - which never had anything close to platforming.

I can’t even fathom what anyone’s motive would be in pretending to actually believe that prior to U8 anyone would expect platforming in a numbered Ultima game. Just total horseshit.

Ultima 8 was hot garbage and anyone who says otherwise is being a hipster contrarian doofus.

Comparing it to Diablo is also peak retardation. No real loot, no meaningful character progression system, no randomized and emergent dungeons, etc. etc. It's actually closer to a Zelda game and if I had to guess I'd say that's what Garriott meant when he defended the game.
