Strap Yourselves In Serpent in the Staglands Shadorwun: Hong Kong Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
What makes Wizards in D&D interesting is that things that you see arcane casters doing in novels, like Vance's novels, you can do in game.
For all that Vance's setting inspired old Gygax I get the distinct impression that the casterfags of The Dying Earth were more like half ignorant scientists than practitioners of anything magical per se.

biggest dfference from your past purchase would be amd cpus heat less, cost less and perform better than intel now.
do keep in mind if you have the old intel = better sentiment

Doing Rysen 7 3800x, 2TB SSD (clip on to motherboard?), 32GB RAM, top end available vid card with option to upgrade when new available for about $1,700 using existing case (new fans).

Less than I spent last time. No hassle. Seems good.

That's a good point. And, if I may, counterpoint.

Indeed and you are allowed to counterpoint as a reaction, out of your turn .

I am enjoying 5e.

NOO YOU CAN'T HECKIN ENJOY 5E WHAT ABOUT CLASS DIVERSITY AND CUSTOMIZATION

There's already a bit more of customization available in xanathar guide to everything, wildermount and tasha's cauldron's of everything . Wizards get chronurgy , and order of scribes, those are pretty good, phantom rogue, even monk get something good now, astral monk.Problem is BG3 is just the base ruleset, not even including everything , no multiclassing. So there's very little to discuss when it will come to builds.True 5e with a bit of tweaking is a good system.
Not blaming them , that was expected, yet i'd prefer something less spectacular graphically but with every options.

If you are looking for advice, I'd say 1700 dollars is too much if you are not playing AAA games in 4k. I changed all my computer parts (including monitor, but not storage) 5ish months ago and I paid around 550 Euro for new parts (i.e. not-used). I can play all non-AAA games I can think of on ultra settings at 60+ FPS. I haven't tried any AAA games because I have no interest in them. Isn't there a GPU shortage now anyway? That would also drive up the prices.

Actually's it's the DM's job to create the game world within which the players play the game. Promoting role play is a secondary concern.

So if a player expresses a desire to play a Fighter / Mage then a good DM would facilitate that instead of saying 'no you can't because it's too OP'. Again, I'm not saying players should just become Wizards or Fighters out of nowhere. But creating arbitrary restrictions is not what a good DM does.

I mean unless it is an important part of your game world that such restrictions exist. But then, those wouldn't be arbitrary.
No, the DM is just another player, the players should not act like insuferrable childs and protest if the DM don’t want or don’t like something.

Who said anything about acting like insufferable children, or protesting?

Please read what I wrote carefully, I said arbitrary restrictions.

If I decided something, it's not arbitrary. At my table, there's a rule that if the player disagrees with my ruling on anything, he's allowed to bring it up during the game - once. If I don't correct myself, he can argue with me about it after the session is over, but I'm under no obligation to listen, and my word is always final. I run the game for these shits, putting an ungodly amount of time and effort into preparation - not to mention the sessions themselves. Therefore, I have the final word on everything.
Coincidentally, for some reason my table runs very smoothly and without any issues, players always show up to the sessions and do so on time.

OK, let me give some examples

1) "Fighter-mages don't exist in my world because casting spells requires total concentration and constant practice during spare time. They simply don't have time to practice swordplay, and they are busy concentrating on spellcasting during combat. The concentration mechanic in this world requires the mage to actually concentrate and do nothing else that's overly strenuous, so you can't just cast a concentration spell then attack using your weapon. I know this is a departure from standard 5E rules but they're my rules."

2) "You can't play a Fighter-mage because I think they're too powerful. So I'm not allowing it."

One of these is a carefully thought out restriction that is logical within the game world. The other is an arbitrary restriction created on a whim.

I am under no obligation to come up with an in-universe explanation for a single thing.
To clarify, I have no issues with gishes, and I allow them at my table. But if I decide that some element of the system is unbalanced, and therefore I don't want it present in the game, I'll strike it out with no excuses. Just as an example, there'll be no "in my setting, wizards can't specialize in divination, because the great cataclysm damaged the Weave". There'll be a "divination wizard subclass is banned".

Pretty much this. They are the lucky ones who found old tech/"Magic". Find enough of these items and you become a "wizard" and a powerful one at that. Hell, Rhialto takes a trip through time and the first thing his mates in the circle do is loot his house. The entire plot of this story is how wizards of the dying earth are a bunch of baboons with no real knowledge or understanding of the forces they meddle with, they are like babies when faced with real practitioners of science.

But Rhialto, even though he is weak in comparison to the wizards of the golden age, is a smart bastard and kept an ioun stone at the end of the toilet's chain, which is the enbodiment of old school d&d, player wits over powers in a character sheet.

The best thing of these stories is that wizards are a vapid and egotistical bunch, using magic to look younger and score at parties. Or how an ancient witch is turning all the wizards from the circle into women and they are all scared shitless.

There are way bigger balance issues in 5E than Portent though.

Anyway I'm not saying you can't ban overpowered shit at your table if you want to, I'm just saying that a good DM finds a way to facilitate what the player wants to do with their character rather than banning stuff without thought.

I don't ban divination wizards either. This was just an example. If you're interested in my actual houserules, you can take a look here.
  • Houserules can be added by me at any point of the game.
woah stalin much????
  • Tieflings - rare, but exist, reasons unclear. Sometimes burnt to death, especially in the Reich.
so now you're hitler too

Gnomes - do not live.
Delterius it seems an interesting setting.
Nevermind. I like you friend.

The discussion earlier about playing hundreds or 1000s of hours of games is depressing and makes me feel like I should probably stop hanging out the codex since I barely play games now. The most time I’ve spent playing a game in years was like 40 hours on P:FK and even that I feel guilty about bc I could have made a whole week’s salary or spent more time with the family in that much time. Especially since we’ve long established that pretty much everything is shit. imagine how much money you could make in 1000 hours, that’s like 50-55% of the hours I spend on my full time job in a year.

I was expecting far more nasty restrictions from a guy who thinks that 8d6 damage in a game wher CR 2 creatures has more than 40 hp and can soak cannon ball is OP but doesn't seem that harsh. Anyway, I agree with you that the DM's world is final "but I wanna play a wizard and the DM says that his setting is a no magical setting" Simple. Create an non caster or find another group;

The player who needs to adapt to the DM, not the other way around. The exception to that rule is the "paid DMs". And even in that case, the DM must "please" the group not the player. For eg, if a player wanna low level 5e adventure and everyone else wanna run throne of the bloodstone on 2e,(or most likely the other way around, it is just an example), the DM would obvious have to please the group.

I'm just saying that a good DM finds a way to facilitate what the player wants to do with their character rather than banning stuff without thought.

And I agree. But also you have to think on DM's side. Many DM's doesn't like multiclass because there are far more guys using multiclass to create Pun Pun build than interesting characters.

Yeah, you know what's my problem with that? I don't really enjoy working, and instead enjoy playing videogames very much.

I do agree with you that it's a two way street. And I sympathise with DMs that dislike multiclassing. But multiclassing can lead to just as many interesting character ideas than a pure build can. It doesn't have to solely be about maximising pew-pew.

Sounds like you could use a little more nihilism there, Nihiliste. You’re turning into a Republican. Hobby time doesn’t translate readily into work time without degrading both work and life performance.

A good balance works best.

Find a job you like better and pays lots of $$$. If all else fails you could get a job writing 5 minute troll essays about how video games are racist and misogynistic for Ivy League schools, DC think tanks, and the UN and mint money.
