Got my OSE Advanced Fantasy books finally!

To the rest of you still waiting hang in there.
I envy you, bro. Mine is at least a month away. They did not even sent it yet. It's aways hard to wait this kind of stuff in here.

But, What did you get? I took the tomes and the new adventures.

I went with the tomes nice and chunky I get why he split them between a DMs and Players version now to make at table use faster.

Update on BFRPG with Pathfinder players: One of the seasoned players is determined that less mechanics = less player power. I tried explaining that it's not supposed to be a video game where you just look up the most op builds to insta win rather it is a ruleset governed by adventure not an adventure governed by ruleset but I believe I was unsuccessful. They are still playing though, I am just awaiting someone to reply to the posted material (This is play by post, as to not interupt the weekly Pathfinder game).

This can be unlearned, I have personally seen it happen. But some still end up preferring Pathfinder's autistic "rule for everything" system.

I used to follow the OSR community since it started and always found it interesting how they systems follow the same trajectory as the old days. starts off as basic D&D and slowly turns into "alright maybe just a few new rules....maybe a some skills....we'll call it advanced Mazes & Monsters"

Nah, we've all known each other for years he just has a mechanics fetish. I always have to turn down random shit he finds for Pathfinder, because fuck reading 3rd party stuff to figure out what obscure rule he wants to abuse in it. I'm not even an evil dm, if anything I'm more afraid of killing the players so I'm not sure what joy mechanical domination would bring.

some gamers just cannot function without a strict set of rules and guidelines. im kinda of like that. I grew up with rolemaster and shit which was all about charts and graphs and tables

That is fair. I suppose it is just a difference in how one perceives rules. You, and maybe my friend, see them as listing what you can do. I however perceive them as listing what I can't do.

I read through the DCCDE kickstarter text and... I'm not feeling it. At all. There's nothing there to get me excited. Yes, they certainly namedrop and quote Vance plenty enough and use quaint words, but it all feels a bit forced somehow, hard to explain.

Another thing that bugs me is that they focus so much on spells and magic. Obviously that is a big part of the setting, but what happened to good old exploration and travelling about the Dying Earth? Isn't that what Cugel did for two whole books?

Doesn't help that it costs $110 and doesn't even include the core rules. Yeah... didn't see this coming but looks like I'm gonna pass on this one. Not like they'll miss my money anyway, it's nearing $100k already, and judging by the comments, people are plenty hyped, so maybe it's just me.

Well I mean you don't really need any rule books for exploring Dying Earth just the novels and port it into your system of choosing. But yeah it would be nice if they went into more detail about how much detail they're providing on the exploring the lands of the Dying Earth rather than focusing on just the mechanics. They do mention "a comprehensive survey of all the aeons: notable events, personages, and places" at the start.

What I do not like at all is kicks starter backer only exclusives such as "Monster ecology and lairs" and "100 adventure hooks" should they make the stretch goals. They sound useful but if they make it should be available to everyone but I guess that's how the business goes now a days to try to capitalize on FOMO.

Also, in theory you may be able to play The Dying Earth Box set without the rest as it includes four new classes of Wayfarer (apparently based on Cugel), Vat-born, an altered version of the wizard class, and witch. And its only 110 for the box set and six adventures. If you just want the box set it's only 50 bucks and they include a optional add-on on the checkout page for the core rules. 50 for the hardcover core book or 25 for paperback.

I've got a friend who got to play multiple of the DCC conventions play tests for Dying Earth and apparently its fantastic and games for it fill up fast there so there is something to the hype.

Kickstarter has been kicking my ass wallet this year. Sorry honey, we're going on a diet this week.

I wonder at this rate if you'll even afford buying food on a diet budget. ;)

Hyperborea is about to lunch on July 1st I'm told. Covers look slick.

I'll be in for the PDF. I already own the 1st ed. boxed set (which I love its two volume set with its spiral bound books) and a signed limited ed. print of the 2nd ed. book, so for a game that I only ever mine for ideas and don't actually run, I've got enough Hyperborea to cover my bases. It's tempting though.

Death Frost Doom is also another great way to kick things off (what's better than letting your player's trash your setting in session 1 and then dealing with the fallout?).

If the LotFP test run is successful, I was thinking of starting a campaign and plopping Mt. Deathfrost in the local area. This way I'd let the players bring the misfortune of running Death Frost Doom on themselves :D

Anyways, for my test adventure I'll stick with Tower of the Stargazer, it's suitably weird and not so combat heavy and that should work well with my players. I'll let you know how it goes.

Lol, replying to myself.

Anyways, things are going really well. Players are seemingly loving it and they responded well to save or die traps (they triggered only one so far). Everyone had a great laugh as their Specialist dropped dead from the poison needle trap on a chest, then they proceeded to plunder his corpse :D

There was one complaint that the system is too simple w.r.t. to player options, but others love this change of pace & not worrying about bonus actions or other special stuff from D&D 5e.

Btw, we tested Delta Green, Cyberpunk RED, and are now testing this. We may try out Swords & Wizardry if the group gets nostalgic for their D&D 5e characters (these will be converted to S&W), but so far it looks like Delta Green or LotFP will become our main game(s).

Might be worth looking at a mail-forwarding company like https://planetexpress.com/ if you are going for one of the higher tiers...

Does anyone have some good OSR systems to recommend?

What kind of osr you looking for? Pure retro-clone trying to replicate original D&D systems just with better presentability?

Or looking for ones doing their own thing and just capturing the "spirit" of OSR play.

Either one works for me. I've primarily played 5e IRL and Pathfinder through Kingmaker. I suppose my only real request is nothing with too much number crunching.

Then almost anything works, and there are just specific works that add flavor you want, in my (short) experience.
