If I hadn't replay favorite games from time to time, more precisely as a habit some time ago, I'd probably say Bloodlines. But since I beat it probably too many times, I'll say Starcraft. Have so many fond memories around this game when I were sinking into this hobby and the game is simply brilliant all around, I could still play it for weeks.

The idea is more like ''you have one month left to live, which game will you play before you die."
The hope was that folks could interpret the question intuitively, answering a simple "What's your favorite?" and interpreting it as they chose without requiring contract-in-blood level instructions. Clearly this was optimistic of me as this is the

Codex.

For me, the "scenario" (if there must be one) is closer to: you slip on a banana peel and break your neck with catastrophic force. A brief instant away from death, the brain floods with its last reserves of endorphins, your life flashes before your eyes and you relive one or more pivotal moments of your course on this earth, with time only to re-experience one most cherished video game. As your muscles relax and your concluding breath ebbs through your shattered trachea like the last wisp of smoke from a crushed cigarette, the beloved memory of which game flashes across your fading consciousness, granting a final taste of your greatest gaming joy before everything you are is gone forever, as if it never was?

While it isn't anymore for most of my life it was unquestionably Warcraft 3.

A truly great RTS that excelled in every area and as a cherry on top it had some of the best modding tools ever produced, leading to endless custom game modes that in turn spawned some of the most popular games of today. I've played the base game for thousands of hours, custom games for thousands more and I've modded it for hundreds of hours.

This game was lightning in a bottle on release. Graphics, gameplay, sound - all perfectly blended.

If by favorite you mean what I felt as the peak of video games. Not just what I would rather play for the rest of my life.
Then Children of a Dead Earth.
This position can be updated if anything better is released in future.

To elaborate why it is my favorite.
Because the very first few video games I was playing are all about space warfare or wargames.
There was not much story or gamey designs as the regular space or popular "war" games of today.
Many of them are like the evolution of initial tabletop wargames.
As a simulation to reflect the reality of war, not supposed to be a game or sport(E-Sport) such as chess.

But due to how computer was so limited in the early video games days.
They tend to use alot of more gamey design that comes from late casual tabletop wargames.
The simulation of space war was always a dream for me.
As computer became more powerful, things get worse in video games.
Most games start to become more gamey and sporty just like the history of tabletop games.
There is not much "we trying to simulate space warfare"
instead you get a ship with 50 atk 50 def and all the gamey designs for a "game".
The entire numeric stats of those abstract game number are for gamey purpose of
"beating the game"
"sport"
"challenge"
Instead of reflection of reality.

Instead of using all those computational power to calculate more units and physics.
They use it for fancy graphics of few artistic "space ships"
And all the space war fought like WW1 dog fight.

If they use this attitude to do a WW2 pacific games, they will make BB as valid as CV simply because it is more fun and balance that way.
In fact, the map will be no bigger than 50KM^2 for WW2 naval battle,
So a DD can have a good chance to sink a BB on it's own, what a joke.
That is good game design for game but not for wargames.
You get more serious simulation for real historical wargames but not much for space warfare.

Children of a dead earth is not like that.
It is the proper evolution of wargame for space.
Where hardware improvement is used on calculation and realisation of simulating a space warfare.
It is not perfect at all, it is not artistic, it doesn't try to be one.
It is not even trying to be a game.
A game designer always think about how to make games balance, fun and gamey and artistic.
The dev of COADE think none of that.
There is very little presumption on how space warfare should be, it is all simulation first.

There is no "this weapon is too unbalance and break the gameplay so we need to tweak the game to make gamer feels more challenge"

It is also a game that prove hardware improvement is necessary for good game.
And that is not for improved graphic only.
Because I need a computer to calculate all the frags and physics calculation.
I need more ships and missiles to be calculated to simulate a bigger battle.
Try to do those things in 80s and 90s games, you can't.
Try to do those things in tabletop wargames, you can't.
This is supposed to be the strength of computer calculation.
Not 21st century board game.

So it is fun to play.
This is what video games of 80s space wargame should evolved into.
For this reason it is my favorite in video game. And the only one to achieve that at moment.

Quality aside, for me, the #1 game would also be one that I could reasonably play for the rest of my life and nothing else.

So, does the choice include any and all possible mods for such a game? If yes, then Fallout New Vegas.

Anyway, I'm tipsy and it's too humid outside to meet my future wives, so I feel like kind of elaborating why this, and not other games.

Is the GameBryo incarnation of it shit? Well, it is, and is not, at the same time. Definitely, the graphics are the lowest possible point there, but those Bethesda kind of games do some things, that other games will not or cannot replicate easily for this reason or another.

But I simply have to concede that there are parts of it that are stellar, even (or especially) by today's standards. Even aside from obvious strengths of it, regardless of the game itself like writing, dialogues etc. that would be great regardless of the form they're given in, there are parts of it, like level design or art direction, that just recreate that Fallout 1/2 feeling perfectly, or as perfectly as is possible given the switch from bird's eye view to 1st/3rd person. It's something I noticed with Freeside Open for the first time, but walking around Freeside/Westside/North Vegas and those "empty" huge rectangular buildings is a 1:1 recreation of walking around shit like The Hub or New Reno in OG Fallouts.

Also, given that this game is in one way or another a shooter, I have never, ever seen such gun porn in my life. If not for FNV I would not even ever think of such a term. I was always flabbergasted why Bethesda never thought of it and their games just go with some makeshift jury-rigged peashooters*, as the selection is just ENDLESS. To give just one example, I think Riot Shotgun gives is on Doom 2 SSG's level of impressiveness. I could give as many such examples as most of the weapons in-game, and on an RPG side it makes even stuff like Explosive builds 110% viable. And the majority of this stuff would just not work as well, if not for sound design, which is just perfect all-around.

Pertinent to the last point, playing this game with the Bloody Mess perk, even vanilla, is something that makes Brutal Doom pee its pants on all fronts, and didn't the latter come out later lmao. It's gibs everywhere, it's gibs, eyeballs, brains, plasma-melted corpses or piles of ash. I always chuckled when it came to looting all those "bodies" and looking around which part of the leg or eyeball belonged to whom. That kind of shit just isn't the same with Fallout 4 Creation and it's wimpy and flaccid design.

Lastly and obviously, as mentioned already on a daily basis, it's modding that is the strongest part of those games, but I'll let the last part speak for itself as I'm sadly sobering up.

1* I will give credit where credit is due and say that Fallout 76 post-Wastelanders, is simply far superior to F3/4 in this aspect as well. It took inspiration from New Vegas/Tactics by bringing back cool stuff like Winchester P94, Grenade Machinegun, or even simple things like SAA Peacemaker, to flatout crazy shit like explosive Gauss Minigun.

Probably Chrono Trigger. There are better games but I think it aged very well. I grew up with Chrono Trigger and replay it at least once a year. There is something about the world of CT that just feels very comfy

Well “best-designed” is quite different than “personal favorite”. I think the former is quite a bit harder to pick.

Maybe UU1 or JA2.

Or
The Pillars games

Doom 1's probably it for me. Even ignoring mods and just playing vanilla, that very well might be the game I've come back to the most in my life. Not really a good stranded-on-a-island game or anything but in terms of perfect game I can replay at any time and enjoy myself that'd be the top of the list. Even my favorite RPGs aren't as suitable since there's more of a time commitment there if you want a satisfying experience, Doom you can play a level or an episode or the whole damn thing. There's probably a good part of nostalgia in there too since I still remember how blown away I was the first time I saw Doom shareware, but it managed to shift to different styles of gameplay over the years. Starting with being incredibly clumsy with the controls and it absolutely being a horror game, to the present of higher difficulty high speed running and gunning. Even play it keyboard-only on occasion like back in the day, had to get a better keyboard that could handle holding down up-left-shift-alt-control all at once without losing keys though.
