It's terminology because your party moves as one whole unit, basically, e.g. an amorphous blob. Everyone occupies the same space.

Blobber is a subgenre of first person dungeon crawlers. Or is first person dungeon crawler a subgenre of blobbers?

You need a party and tiles and them moving as a blob for it to be a blobber. Gothic is not a blobber for example.
But gothic isn't first person and doesn't really involve many dungeons.

Ultima underworld is a non-blobber first person dungeon crawler. But you could have a non-blobber, party-based first person dungeon crawler. Just imagine Rainbow Six as a dungeon crawler. Or NWN in first person. You use a hotkey to switch between characters. Not saying it would be good.

Bad example. Just take another first person arpg dungeon crawler that is not a blobber then. That one is certainly not a blobber. (neither is Gothic btw)
