It's impossible for the youth who didn't live through it to understand those years between the rise of peer2peer file sharing and the digital distribution of music, films, games, getting mostly sorted out.

A lot of the PC gaming is dying thing comes straight from this era and the many misunderstandings that people had about tech, consumer habits, etc.

Wow, another split by our resident (((loser))) moderator. I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.

How tf is this genre dead? Braindead shooters are still a significant part of the market

It's not.

It's a shitty Infinitron split from probably some useful discussion that got too interesting.

Sellout PC devs killed the FPS. There is no single game. Everyone just either universally sold out, or went bust due to egomania/internal conflicts/publisher greed.

Bungie from Marathon to Halo
Infinity Ward with Call of Dooty
id with realism/graphics whoring (Doom 3) and abandonment of SP in favor of MP (Q3 Arena)
Valve with graphics whoring uninspired junk (Half-Life 2) and other such mediocrity.
3D Realms and whatever crazy bender they went on that resulted in collapse.
Ion Storm with Invisible War and Retardkatana
EPIC with abandonment of SP in favor of MP (Unreal Tournament) then moving on to making absolute trash (Gears of War, Fortnite)

Among all the other absolute shit pumped out in the 2000s. Some weird obsession with realism, graphics whoring and cinematics instead of actual game design. I'm not sure if they were just playing to the market though. Probably. Trash clearly sells. Consoles have little to do with it. PC gamers are majority low-standards too. Browsing steam disgusts me. Always has.
I remember browsing the internet way back and so much discussion was just graphics whoring. Boasting about your awsum rig that can run Crysis. I was a kid and I couldn't believe how short-sighted and retarded these people were.

But lets be real here. Fuck all this focus on the FPS, it's narrow-sighted. Every genre not capable of mass market appeal died. Every one that was (FPS) was turned into worthless lowest common denominator trash that legitimately damages the kids of today. AAA stealth is no more. RPG is a shit show. Strategy or literally anything slow-paced, turn-based or without immediate gratification is not made. Pretty much any action game became dumb insulting popamole that plays itself. Indie devs have to pick up the slack in every regard. We're only still here because indies and smaller studios.

Money talks and is tangible, plus instantly gratifying. Integrity is just some meaningless abstract concept for suckers.

I have a hunch about the real answer to the question.

Listen to me. I will take a wild guess and say that the game below definitely killed the shooter genre:

Broken Age

Amirite or not?

It helped kill interest in diva adventure games, probably for the better.

PC Gaming was fine when its hits had sales in the low 100ks.....

It started to get shitty when ppl turned into Divas thinking they deserve to become millionaires, it was still ok as long as it was Devs that where Divas..... Once the producers turned into Divas it was over.

Nobody gives a fuck whether one of our current inmates spams your garbage site. We can't keep them locked up forever, it wouldn't be humane

Nothing killed the shooter genre
It had it's ups and downs, it's dark phases and glory days

Sure the 7th gen in it's pursuit of massive expansion to the realm of mainstream of culture, sacrificed quality of gameplay for quality of presentation and accessibility to appeal the most wide audience possible
And sure that meant a temporary loss of certain type of shooters
But as we saw around 2015 this trend got stale and as a consequence we got a "revive"

Is it better than the "golden" days?
Only time will tell, but we certaintly got good games out of it
