I just tend to think it was a limitation of its time, and there's no reason to not have proper full 3-d environments in this day and age. I want a place to feel like a real place, not a prissily handcrafted stage set.
They thought the same 20 years ago... and they made Neverwinter nights. I'd rather hope Owlcat isn't trying to go down that road.
What's wrong with Neverwinter Nights? It's a classic (not the OC, but the game as such, and what it implemented of D&D and enabled in terms of user-made content). Sure, the graphics look dated, but there were other compensations.
All you said is true but there is a reason why there are thousand of people still playing IE games, including Beamdog "remastered" versions, while NWN not so much, and the 3D gameplay has a role in it.
