If you think the game isn't hard enough and just run around in realtime at all times, you're not playing on the highest difficulty: opinion discarded
The real problems with this game lies in poor optimization (even the level editor runs like shit on modern systems), p2p online and the fact that sniper rifles will outrange poor AI cheezmode. Back in the day people used the online to roleplay various factions :salute:
Also switching from burst to single fire while the attack is starting up gives you increased damage, it pissed people off in online - not sure why it worked that way but it was never fixed. You can also lob grenades over walls at unseen targets (even stealthed), that's actually a neat feature.

My autism forces me to walk every single item to the exit grid to sell everything (have a guy stand in the grid and just steal everything onto him) it takes time but you'll never be left wanting for money. I haven't ironmanned the game, might give it a shot but the later missions with super mutants where characters get instakilled from across the map 1% accuracy shots will probably get annoying :positive:

It's one-way, but it might be from single to burst and not the other way around, I forget - it was called the "burst bug" - just hit Y or whatever the keybind is when your guy raises your gun and it should do it very consistently. This and EMP ammo was abused pretty heavily (iirc due to higher chance of "staggering" someone, interrupting their attack). It was possible to kill someone before they even got a chance to fight back

It's easy to tell when you're doing it, you'll hear the single shot but it does the burst animation

I haven't ironmanned the game,

Which is a good idea because ironman never fit with a hard tactical game, humongous map size, nearly hundred of enemies each map, equip with heavy machinegun and rocket launcher.

From your bitter whine, I suspect you run into heavy weapon specialist Super Mutants, armed with M2, depleted uranium ammo, highly possible St Louis mission but other missions as well. Antitank weapons, so to speak.

So yeah, running headlong into their range is shit idea. Suicidal. Think possible only by poor tactical gamers. Even vehicles run into that is survivable only a few more turns. Tank might be possible but it's late game addition. APC can not compare.

Also reason why that map has plenty of trench for you to move around.

You don't need to steal everything to him. You can just transfer across like normal. You just need to be close enough, which is further away than steal range. This isn't FO1.

No supermutant had ever shot at me across the map and instakilled any of my guys. There are reasons why real infantry men are taught to hug the ground when gunfire is imminent. There are also reasons why you don't bring pistols to a machinegun fight.

Hardcore TB mode is fun.

The burst bug is when you miss with a burst attack, everyone else within the area of effect gets hit automatically. That is why staying at 1% range of supermutants is a bad idea. This is actually mitigated if you ensure your guys crawl instead of standing upright like training dummies.

And completely negated if the supermutants never get to fire at all.

How's the FTSE burst bug fix? I haven't tried it, but I thought that it's more advanced than that.

Playing FOT right now.
I really don't like CTB. Its too fast and your guys die instantly to super mutants. Playing it pure turn based is too bloody slow because of the number of enemies.
I also don't like how linear the progression is - once you get to super mutants small guns become next to useless, especially SMGs, with only automatic shotguns and sniper rifles becoming worthwhile. That is not something that should exist in a game with weapon skills.
Despite being released in 2001 you don't have the ability to see different elevations like in X-COM, a game released in 1993. This makes it really difficult to determine where windows or doorways are in a building unless you go right up to it.

I do like FoT and I would like a remake / spiritual successor, but bloody hell is it jank and needs refinement.
The fact that the gamble exploit still exists in patch 1.27 is both hilarious and embarrassing, and the burst fire bug really shouldn't be in a tactics game, especially when its really easy to lose soldiers to heavy weapons. That should have been the first thing to be eliminated.

Isn't there a button in the interface that lets you speed up all the turns?
Yeah, and it still takes too long.
It took me more than an hour to beat the second mission because of how long the turns were, and this is with fast movement. CTB feels more like how it was intended to be played, but its so jank and so fast.
The Kansas City mission I feel highlights the problems with CTB; you're supposed to set up your soldiers in defensive positions and keep ghoul casualties to a minimum, but that's impossible to do because as soon as the mission starts you get attacked and you barely have time to give move orders and revise your situation. You couldn't even lay mines, which is bullshit because I took an traps specialist for that reason. The briefing tells you that its a defense mission which would imply some set up (you know, like every bloody tactical game ever) but nope, instant assault within 10 seconds of starting the mission, couldn't even speak to Bishop.

For a tactics game it feels more like a RTS click-fest, like Starcraft or something. Hell, you can even kite in this game, and I found that using a shotgunner to take pot-shots and then kite behind a wall is something you can do in CTB and is extremely viable, perhaps the only thing keeping small guns relevant.
Real Time with Pause would have been a lot better, imo, because at least then you can cue up orders instead of being unable control your units because you toggled turn based mode right when a soldier is out of AP.

You play a vanilla FOT i think? it's been too long since I last played Vanilla.

There's a reason a good number of BIG mods exist for FOT, one of them is fixing tactical impossibility like that.

There's also a reason players of Fallout games pay attention to fix and mods, because vanilla has too many problems.

The last time I play is with Redux, then Equilibrium. Never had problem like that, or at least the missions didnt give me impressions of being too slow, despite my rig not a "gaming rig". fast turn, fast animation options, I think.

Gamble? They did away with that~ No obvious exploit for money. And trading are... nerfed to prevent money bloat and supply bloat.

Small guns come back into play when you start getting Gauss weapons. The 60-80 damage on the rifle is no joke.

TB is only a problem if you stay in combat all the time. You should be able to dropout of combat for most of the mission.

Merida, again
Fun game. Enjoy it every now and then. Like making my own weapons and vehicle modifications with the editor. I think the guy in the video got a few lore bits wrong, but the fuck knows what the actual lore of FO is now.
