I played as a nationalist with a focus on anti-minority activities whilst maintaining some political freedoms. The idea was freedom and wealth for ethnic Sords, a boot for the rest. E.g., didn't ban Red Youth, and only implemented state propaganda when it was clear that we'll be going to war. In terms of the economy, I just did the things that seemed sensible and profitable. I ended up with a very strong economy, to the degree that when I implemented both the luxury tax and the alcohol tax, it still remained at 9/10 and recovered to 10 before the war (it was at 7 after the victorious war). One of the best decisions was to fund the secret police well - this lets you save the driver and the affable VP, as well as deal with the Bluds in multiple ways. Say, I attended their anniversary with a convoy and behaved like a boss, and also successfully destroyed their terrorists. They received a mighty pounding. In the final elections, I came on top, while the National Front came second. This seems like an excellent situation to solve the Bludish menace once and for all.

I think Suzerain could benefit from better closing credits explaining the outcome of your policies. So much has been written already, why not write a bit more to give a sense of satisfaction and completion? Give some more stats like you get in the briefings, for example, on things like GDP and unemployment. Give the breakdown of the vote by region. At least show how much vote each party got.

Unfortunately, the nationalist side does not seem to be especially well-fleshed out. For example, you never seem to be able to communicate with the Young Sords or coordinate anything with them. In my first playthrough, I was deliberately creating ethnic unrest hoping that it would make the nationalists more popular and would make them interact with me, but nothing came out of it. Also you barely ever interact with the National Front leader, although the party does seem receptive to your actions when it comes to voting. I.e., when I passed the constitution, it had 225 yeas to 26 nays, whilst I am certain the Bluds were against me and the National Front has 40 votes. There's not much you can do about the Bluds in general. I don't want unity with them; I want them out. One of the logical things would have been to use the secret police to direct the Bergia polio epidemic to cut down their numbers. Another would be to have some sort of a population exchange in the style of Greek and Turkey. Or grand them independence and kick them out into that state. Also you could use the feminist bill to destroy their families (birth rates generally don't seem to be addressed in the game).

I agree with fantadomat that the war is opaque and not well implemented. I did win it because I funded the army, kept the Gendermerie in the army, improved the military industry, had a strong economy, and aligned myself with both Agnolia and Lespia (but not ATO, and no IMF loan either). However, the communication about some of those things is poor. E.g., Iosif's arguments on the Gendermerie seem like a petulant tantrum, while he could have said that it is important if a war erupts in the area.

I disagree with the comment about the wife though. Having a complacent wife would have removed a theme from the game, that is, using personal connections to push undemocratic but "progressive" reforms. This has been done by many presidential wives of people who were not fond of that sort of thing. I don't think it really interferes with customisation - you can just divorce her. It's also not hard to keep her happy with empty promises; it does seem like she mainly wants a spotlight. Would have been fun if you could discuss the contents of the bill better, but I guess it's covered with the promise to have another bill in the second term. The game seems to adequately explain how she got increasingly feminist (it keeps mentioning "books").

Overall, however, it is a pretty fun game with quite a lot of interaction between your decisions. It doesn't seem like a bunch of +1 -1 counters masked as text.

Also it is interesting that the reforms seem like a big deal, but you can botch them and it doesn't seem to matter that much. I failed to pass them in my second playthrough out of three, and it didn't even destroy my popularity that much. I imagine if I won the war, I'd probably get re-elected, particularly since I psyched out and jailed Ricter with the secret police in that playthrough (but not the victorious one).

Yeah but you cant kill her or fuck her up or keep you kid lol. She just fucks off with the kid and leaves you alone. It all depends how it was written in the game. It doesn't make sense for a far right dude to marry some crazy sjw cunt lol. Also it is pretty shit that you can't change ministers, you have to tolerate sjw spys and shit without being able to act. The game is ok without any competition. But it is not well crafted one,too many plotholes and dead ends, lack any proactive options too.

During my socialist authoritarian playthrough, Anton Rayne met with Kesaro Kibener, leader of the National Front Party, to discuss his potential support for the proposed constitutional reforms. Eventually, the NFP allied with Rayne's United Sordland Party for the re-election campaign.

The Young Sords and Red Youth are both tools used by the nationalist or communist parties, so it wouldn't make sense for Anton Rayne to be able to control them.

Aside from the bills dealing with language in education or religion, you can declare a Bergia Special Zone if you increase your decree powers through constitutional reform.

Young Sords are supposed to be tied to USP but NFP lately influence them while USP has 3 ministers out of place: 2 rabid free market guys and the SJW minister (only tie with USP Is that She Is for state control).

August Broadcast

Citizens of Sordland! There have been some important news in August, and we have also some updates coming up very soon.

Here's a little update from the team! As you have heard our Switch release is coming soon on the 23rd of September with pre-orders kicking live on the Nintendo Store on the 16th with a launch discount of -20%!

Mark that date down and tell your Switch friends! At the start of August, we made the final deliveries for the Switch release build. We achieved a high standard of quality for a platform we have never developed something for before. It was a great learning experience that took intense development time from the arrival of the dev kits in early January 2021.

To break it down the timeline looked like this:

  • Early Research and Design: December 2020 – February 2021
  • Implementation Tests: March 2021 – April 2021
  • Design Completes and Implementation Finishes: May 2021 – Mid June 2021
  • Testing and Polish: Mid-June 2021 – Early August 2021

All in all, we are very happy that this massive challenge for the development team is mostly out of the way. As usual we are already looking forward to updating the Switch version with a small polishing patch after we receive feedback from the players. Gamedev never stops!

Here are some fresh Switch screenshots:

As some challenges end new ones begin. Design work on the secret project has advanced as several feature concepts were laid out by our main designer Ilke with strong collaboration from the team.

Torpor Games is very excited to attempt to break game design norms (succeeding is another story ) by experimenting where we can and where it makes sense within the creative vision. Most of experimentation can be thrown away so we are not getting attached but attempting something fresh and new maybe even for the games industry is always exciting. Expect a tease about this in Q4!

Throughout August we worked on two Suzerain patches: 1.1.6 and 1.1.7. Both went live with a list of content updates, balancing, lore improvements, bug fixes and polishing. The two patches both contained 2.5 months of internal changes to the game.

We are happy to have reached a very high standard of quality and stability on the Suzerain PC version. Additionally, we have added Steam Rich Presence with live status updates from the game (some including your biased choices) landing on your profile and friends list. Juan has done a great job supporting the development initiative here.

The long-requested GOG Achievements also made it to the testing phase and once approved by the store should go live in September.

Mid-August we have decided to reset the repository of our unannounced project to start fresh on certain parts to refactor and improve while retaining old code structure to save time on development time. It’s been a bit challenging to get the ground running but we are very excited to have caught up on momentum with our first testable delivery coming internally in the second week of September. This project is key to helping Suzerain reach new audiences and to spread the message of our studio beyond our current reach.

With only 2/10 economic development and a -2 budget, I'm on thin fucking ice here. Those Blud terrorists are getting on my last nerve.

Never negotiate or show mercy to terrorists.
Of course not. Secret Police took care of everything nice and clean, but the economy still took a massive hit because of the fuckers. Can't they just let me be a genocidal dictator in peace?

Holy fuck, I just got three bars of economic development out of nowhere. Maybe I didn't doom Sordland to misery after all.

So you have two superpowers trying to use you, you have a strong neighbor wanting to invade, you have separatist terrorists, several factions in country which will fuck you if you don't do what they say and to top it off you also get to have a major economic recession at the same time. Oh and yeah, your wife is a fucking feminist and your whole cabinet is full of dysfunctional traitorous scumbags.
EDIT: forgot the left wing and right wing terrorism and street fights, assassinations, etc

I didn't.

- Saved the economy, doubled production, lowest ever inflation, etc. (and Symon was still bitter enough to leave my cabinet)
- Passed dictatorial constitution, which I used to shut up the Bergia terrorists, censor the media, and reshuffle the court (lmao those fucking suckers)
- Used the Secret Police to get sweet revenge on that Rumburgian spy whore (one of the best moments of the playthrough)
- Somehow didn't have Monica divorce me despite being a raging sexist
- Won the war with the help of my buddies at Valgsland and Wehlen
- Gave the queen the middle finger (the other best moment of the playthrough)

Fun game.

Citizens of Sordland!

The fourth month of the year is already upon us, and with that comes the change of season and the beginning of spring!

Our team has made massive developments in all disciplines involved in our unannounced project prototype. We have closed most of the technical challenges and have moved to improve the existing codebase.

Content creation has peaked recently and we have finished a significant amount of the gameplay content we want to display. Now we are splitting our resources in two: improving the quality of what we added and creating the remaining content.

There is a particular push to make the technical flow work which has increased in complexity to what we are used to from Suzerain. Our visual pipelines have seen massive improvements and our locations for the sprint have been completed.

In this pipeline, we are moving forward to polishing what we have and adding some further eye candy.

Audio has finished its major technical challenges and moved on to adding music and sounds to the experience to finalise. In April we will be working on finishing the content of our gameplay mechanic and finalising the rest of the prototype.

We are excited for the future where we will feel confident to share more.

In other news, we are happy to have finalised the mobile port of Suzerain. A big thank you to Özgun Kilit, Daniel Emig and Juan Franco Lagar for all of the final efforts that were put into this.

The entire Suzerain experience functions well on both smartphones and tablets. The playtesting rounds have been fruitful and led us to discover a few issues which we are currently polishing and fixing to ensure a quality experience.

Thanks to our amazing community, we were able to find out about these rare issues sooner rather than latter. More news on this soon

Here are some examples of how our mobile build is looking:

In media news, we were featured in a video interview by the local initiative supporting Berlin indie developers games:net.

Watch the interview below:

We are really happy to welcome a new team member.

Ioannis Petridis has joined the team as a 3D Artist and will work closely with our other 3D artist Stijn. Ioannis comes from a background of architectural design. Before working at Torpor Games he studied architecture in Thessaloniki, while developing a great interest in design, modelling and animation.

Welcome Ioannis!

Did a second playthrough just a few days ago and something sticked out to me a lot more this time around. The amount of women in power.

There's the female Speaker of the Assembly, the Central Bank is lead by a woman, the leaders of two factions in the Supreme Court are women. On top of that, there's a possibility of a woman being made VP and you might even potentially be replaced by a woman in the next election. In 1957. When in the real world there weren't even any female heads of government before the 60s, let alone in a supposedly antifeminist country like Sordland. It's really kinda ludicrous.

Woke logic. They want an eternal struggle of woman to be ever present but at the same time they want them to be badass and have the power now.

It's explained that the previous president made a lot of symbolic appointments of women to positions of power, while avoiding making actual legislative changes about women's right to equal treatment in the workplace and education.

That hardly explains anything. Gloria was the Speaker before Alphonso's term. And even if Alphonso appointed women to the Court, he didn't have the power to make them the leaders of their respective factions. And of course, it doesn't explain why the USP and the population of Sordland (i.e. fantasy Turkey) are willing to vote for a female president.

Also, this is in the 1950s. In the real 1950s, politicians (and everybody in general) didn't give a fuck about virtue signaling or trying to look progressive.

Yeah, well, you're gay.

Seriously though, those bits of writing that attempted to explain all the powerful women were added after the release, when players pointed this discrepancy out to the devs, so no wonder it comes out a bit far fetched.

I'll play the game but they say the Sordland is based on Turkey and merged Atatürk and Kenan Evren into one person. My relatives were clashing against each other on opposing political sides in the late 70's turmoil. Will be interesting experience for me to play, well I can't manage the country worse than you know who.
