I guess you don't have the Prima strategy guide to Gangsters, right? It had quite a bit of information on the game that wasn't in the manual and you can't even find online. Unfortunately I think I threw mine away (thank you gf).

No, this is the first time I'm hearing about that. I tried searching the Internet Archive, but only found Prima's guide for Gangsters 2. It's also available on eBay, for a whopping 72 US dollars.
I've searched my stuff and couldn't find it. It's not on the web afaik, I've searched rigorously. Bought it for 10€ ~2006 or so. It wasn't that good of a guide but it had a few good tables, e.g. all the fronts and businesses and how good the cover is with a value of 0-3 or something like that.

Edit: I bought it again used for less than 5€. It's in German unfortunately but perhaps it's useful. I'll scan the good parts or even ocr and translate. If it helps you with dev it was worth it

Wow, thank you! That would be amazing and it would certainly help.

EDIT: Forgot to add this: I can read a little bit of German, but I'm sure I can manage with the help of Google Translate if you find it is too much text to translate. In any case, thank you again for the effort!

I've got the guide now. There are 10 pages of tables that might be useful, funnily they are already German and English. There is a FAQ section that has a mix of mostly unspecific and some specific information. The rest are general strategies and tips for all the scenarios (the latter most of the guide).

Great, thanks for the update! It would be very helpful to see those, I hope you can take pics of those pages and post them here.

The tips section is in German but ocr'd. Drop it in deepl if it interests you. Like I said, there are a couple of infos there, but not a lot.
The rest of the guide is more of a strategy guide for the first weeks and for all the scenarios.

Hope this helps. :salute:

Hi! I stumbled upon your Thread here and I'm making a similar thing right now in Unity as a mobile application. Maybe I can help you out with some infos since I decrypted most of the original files and extracted texts and stuff.

For example the decoded Gangsters/data/Constants.xtx starts with:

# CONSTANTS.TXT
# constants for use in game

2000 # number of civilians in city
12 # number of judges
12 # number of attourneys
5 # initial number of hoods in a gang
3 # starting number of explosives
1 # number of businesses to start with in a gang
1 # number of vehicles a gang starts with
6000 # starting money for a gang

400 # number of police in city
100 # number of FBI in city

############################################################
######## FEAR CONSTANTS ####################################
100 # OWNER_FEAR_RANGE;
-20 # OWNER_FEAR_BASE;
100 # CIVILIAN_FEAR_RANGE;
-20 # CIVILIAN_FEAR_BASE;

...
...
...

#######################################################
########### ELECTION STUFF ############################
100 # min blocks to enter election
4 # cost divisor (not 0!)

#######################################################
########### COURT CASE STUFF ##########################
0 # investigator squeal test addition
100 # loyalty addition
1 # case against multiplier
1 # case for multiplier

#######################################################
########### GANG SPLITTING STUFF ######################
192 # number to compare loyalty to
64 # number to compare hostility - fear to

#######################################################
########### ORDER TIMING CONSTANTS ####################
140 # location based
1500 # block based order
96 # block based but only visit on location

#######################################################
########### FBI SUSPICION OF INCOME CONSTANTS #########
5000 # Base illegal income before any suspicion happens
16 # amount to divide accountant skill by
2 # amount to multiply suspicion increase by : ((Illegal Income / Legal Income) - Accountant Skill Factor) * VALUE

#######################################################
########### Police allocation variables ###############
1320 # mayor allocation of police for patrols gets divided by this

#######################################################
########### Recruit test variables ####################
40 # Addition to intelligence when testing against highest skill
36 # addition to our gang size when testing against average skill
45 # addition to our gang size when testing against highest skill

Hey any interest in making this project open source? Would love to contribute and I'm sure there's plenty more who would too.

Thank you for the interest, but for now I think I'll keep working on this solo. I may reach out for some help with music or art.

It's great to see people are still influenced by this game till this very day. I was a day one adopter, I purchased this game when it first came out back in 1998 and played the shit out of it day after day. I too for a while wanted to make a revamped version of this great strategic game and that is what brought me here.

Quilty, my hat off to you for working on the remake and posting your progress. I know how it is to develop something from scratch by yourself but could you imagine how much more progress you can get done with a team of developers? Like IpDipDawg said, I believe your best bet is to make this game open source, if organized with the right people this has huge potential. I believe this game must have multiple player and has to have the ability to have more than 4 main gangs. The map must be a lot larger than the original. Needs to have night and day. The work week needs to be really thought out properly, hoods should be able to enter any building you desire and have controls to do things like extort business owner, smash up, etc on the spot during the work week.

Now for the graphics they don't need to be next gen so at least there is some leeway there but the music and sound effects need to be spot on and of the highest quality possible. Must be 20's inspired music, Jazz stuff like that much like the original which has great music and sound effects.

We can go on and on with everything the game needs but we should work together to make this game. Find out the ways we can work together like using slack to communicate with each in the development progress.

I know the main issue here is trust and I completely agree.

When it comes to this sort of thing nobody wants to have someone else take their work and use it on their own project. But I do believe it can be done properly where we all come together and try to bring other great minds that can help contribute to helping make this game.

I personally can bring multiple things to the table on the project. If we have a clear vision and goal I wouldn't mind hiring graphic artists as well as potential coders and AWS hosting. I can code but it depends on the language, have experience coding in JAVA, C#, C++, PHP and Python. I'm very well verse in website development and can create many different types of websites. For this project we would want to have a landing page at first talking about the project and a forum if needed. Really can do anything if I've giving enough time to get familiar with the software, platform or system.

I believe finding people who can help contribute to the games development would be crucial in the beginning. I know a good friend of mine who loved playing this game as much as I do has great ideas for strategy and can contribute valuable ideas on game mechanics, he has lots of experience playing strategy games like myself. He and I every so often talk about the potential of an update version of the game and after finding this thread I texted him, lol.

Quilty, let me know if you would be interested in talking more about this. Maybe off the forum. I live in Southern California, in the off chance you might live near me.

See you later.

Jonathan.

Loved this game back in the day, always felt the second one had some good ideas but poor execution. Hope this works out so the curse is broken! Might interest you as well but there (was? is?) another group of 8 dudes that announced a remake back in the mid 2010's, but it looks like it fizzled out circa 2017.

Sorry for such a late reply and thank you for the interest. I plan to continue working on this solo. I am a hobbyist and only have time to work on this when work/life permits so wouldn't want to commit to a group effort.

Thanks, I know about that project, seems like it petered out after a while. Their pathfinding solution did give me some good ideas for how to manage my own, as I'm running into the same problems with a large number of agents (and the original supposedly supported 5000 if I remember correctly, a massive and impressive number, especially back in the day). I'm still working on my project but have stopped sharing videos until I am satisfied with the visual presentation. All the models I've used so far were free assets so I wanted to come up with my own using some very basic Blender skills. To maintain visual interest and avoid too much repetition in the appearance of the city, I have decided to create modular building parts that can then be procedurally assembled during city generation to create a bit more unpredictability and variety, so I've been working on that for some time now.

Quilty a suggestion for your note please

I notice that you have characters' avatar. Please make sure that players can mod in our own personal collection of avatars. Or so you can update your dlc addon avatar packs.

I mean, some of us would like to introduce the Yellow Menace with Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Maggie Q, Lucy Liu etc...

And some Codex degenerates would certainly like to add Konoha Ninja with Naruto, Tsunade, Sakura etc...

Thanks, that's something to keep in mind and it shouldn't be too difficult to implement at the end of development.

Hello,

just checking in, if there is anything new about the thing. Is it still worked on or did you give it a break?

Another thing I wanted to give you a notice about is the game "Pixel Gangsters". You can find it on Steam. I didn't play it so far, but it looks to be a Gangster OG clone with Pixel Graphics. Seems to be very basic though, more basic than the original game, but if you don't already heard of ot it maybe could be interesting for you.

Looks pretty cool. Too simple though. Perhaps PG2 will be more finished.
